Good news. At last he is getting recognition. Which also means possibly he is not well. Every time the name of awardee is released, the person is almost in the end being very sick. I wish healthier life for Mannadey.
Is he a top singer than Kishore, Rafi, Mukesh, SPB & Jesudas? or his contribution to cinema is greater than guys...what is the criteria for giving this award?

Dear he is not the top than Kishore,rafi.lata.But also he is not the bottom than these singer.

Rafi is ultimate and Kishore is no match to him. But Manna Dey is quite close to Rafi as far as range is concerned. In other words Manna Dey is the only person who somewhere near Rafi. He is top rated classical singer. Wish him good health.

I very much agree with you Pradeep. Now days people are doing too much of talking emotionally. He was the only singer who could sing all types of songs apart from Rafi. As these both were singers with an classical ginging background.

agreed Manna Dey is an alter ego of Rafi saab.One should listen to his doleful Bangla numbers.
It is a great news to the fans of Indian music! Manna Dey will be remembered for so many great songs - from "Waqt" to "Anand" to "Zanjeer" to "Talash"!
Also, People living outside Bengal may not know that Manna Dey is the man who dominated the Bengali love songs for almost four decades - from 50s to 80s. People like us learnt to court women from his songs!
This is the best news of the day. No other singer has been able to sing filmi songs based on classical music in an endearing manner as he has. Those songs are classics and will always be remembered by the connoisseurs of music. Apart from Hindi and Bengali and quite possibly other languages as well, his Salilda composed song in the gold medal winning malayalam film Chemeen has a rare aalap which many other established singers would not dare to attempt.
