"Pazhassi Raja is a propaganda movie. It is invented history. The places and events are wrongly depicted to promote Kottayam, although Travancore was a princely state at the time of British Raj and the king of Travancore was on very good terms with the British. Nayars were part of the army that crushed the Moppalah Rebellion, the Muslim Rebellion against British rule in Malabar District of North Kerala, the only part of Kerala under direct English rule. Malayalis of erstwhile Travancore are politically adept, thanks to English medium British education since 1817 (read up about CMS and LMS missionaries in Travancore). The movie makers are banking on the ignorance of the masses to sell propaganda as history. It is merely PR for south Kerala tourism and for many in Travancore to feel a part of history in Indian independence struggle in which they did not participate. The presence of British benefited them the most in Kerala. Illaya Raja, is he a king? Neither was Pazhassi Raja! Malabar District had no kings during British Raj, leave alone a Nambudiri Brahmin king. To portray a Hindu king in the role of a Nambudiri Brahmin priest is so disturbing. Agreed movie makers have the freedom of artists, but then they should not call their fairy tale history. How amusing to say that history was written wrongly over two hundred years after the event supposedly took place."

The kottayam mentioned in this film is not the present Kottayam district..It was a place in wayanad district..

And why you are getting agitated..Your comments like "To portray a Hindu king in the role of a Nambudiri Brahmin priest is so disturbing" is unwarranted..

And I don't agree to any of the things you mentioned in your comments..

Typical (Sample)Mallu blind beliefs!!!

1) K.J.Yesudas is the greatest singer in the world..(Other singers are usless)

2)Mammootty & Mohanlal are world famous actors!!!(Others like Amitabh Bachchan, Sharukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar & Salman Khan r regional actors...who are famous only in their respective states.)
3)Latest addition Rasul Pookutty is responsible for any sound in the film including Ilayaraja's background music.

And the highlight A.R.Rehman, Shankar Mahadevan & Hariharan are all mallus not tamilians!!!!

From your postings in the message board it is clear that you are a Tamilian.

We malayalees have great respect to tamil artists like Ilayaraja, Kamal Hassan etc..We expect the same from you for our artists..

Regarding the points you have mentioned above, I would like to respond..

1. Dr. KJ Yesudas is a Genius in his field and we are proud of him..
2. Mammootty & Mohanlal along with Kamal Hassan are India's TOP 3 Actors..
3. Who are telling Shankar Mahadevan & Hariharan are malayalees...They are tamil brahmins from Palakkad, Kerala

But A R Rehman is a Malayalee..

Regarding your viewpoints about this movie - its your personal opinion and you have the freedom of telling whatever you want..But please don't hurt other's emotions and just because Pazhassi Raja is a Malayalam movie it doesnot make it bad..

Mr. Palicha's dilema or is it ignorance???
by sunny on Oct 20, 2009 02:47 PM  | Hide replies

Mr. Paresh

Your opening line says PR is brilliant, your end wording says on a note of ambiguity, PR may not be a classic as OVVG. Your rating for a "brilliant" film is only 3.5 stars.
All these are contradictory notes, outlining the belief that you are not a genuine film critic.
Film critics have to be spot on like the famous Dereck Malcolm of The Guardian who used to have high a opinion on malayalam films! You cannot contradict your views on a film at different stages in the review. for one OVVG and PR are classics, each in a different genre of film making. Your reveiw looks like a brief commentary on the film rather than analysing all aspects of film making, one by one. May be technical analysis is difficult as you have to be versed with those aspects fully and probably that's why you have chosen to cover those aspects by saying camera is sleek, fights are holywood style, etc and close the matter. My request to you is :Please grow up or stop reviewing!!"

This movie is a wonderful experience.
I am not a Mammootty fan but I was bursting out several times in cinema hall.

Not only Keralavarma Pazhassiraja but people like KUnkan and chandu are genuine warriers with mighty heart.

Respects the effert.
And thanks for this adrenalin pumping stuff.

Have you seen the classics like "BenHur"/ "Ten Commandements"? Which language was used in those classics.

These movies are made for 20/21st century human beings. Not for the people living in 1st century or 17/18th century.

Don't talk nonsense just for the sake of criticising.

Well said Alex!, Most people including Mallus, would accept anything and everything made in Hollywood as classic, whereas a honest attempt to make a genuine and original movie by bunch of artists is critisized with pathetic and silly statements.
