How to get an oscar
by Neel P on Feb 24, 2009 10:49 AM

1. Story should be about Indian slums or something deriding India. Definitely not an IT story or a Kalpana Chawla story
2. Must only be directed by a foreign ( Western ) white skinned person.
3. Put as many white technicians as possible.
4. Publicity by white people.
5 Next movie getting an oscar may be something like an Indian dog or slums in India etc

It is not even 3 months completed since the mumbai attacks where many innocent civilians are killed and now the focus is completely shifted but again the focus is on the same city, this time on its slums. As far as the movie is concerned it is a mediacore movie including rahmans music and is definetely not an oscar material.

Oscars ?? One more award ceremony!!
by Prabhakar KRISHNA on Feb 24, 2009 09:57 AM  | Hide replies

I think Taare Zameen Par by Aamir Khan, which changed perceptions about millions of learning disabled children in India( by the way which failed to get even nominated for Oscars) would have also won Oscars if they have shown the child as slumchild covered in filth and the teacher running his school form public toilet and the entire cast defecating on roads with their bare bums. It would have appealed to the western audience.

Prabhakar, I completely agree with you. I think had they made TZP in Hindi and that too a 1.5 hour movie, it would "atleast be considered" for the Oscars

You think it wrong!!!
Taare zameen par had a nice story but week screen play, childish editing, dragging scene flow, back ground score didn't corrosponden with mood of the film, camera work didn't pick originality of the story and concrete details of the screen play, amir over acted ( too many expressions. our bollywooders are more of stage actors) and of course the dance and singing in between scenes.
First learn the criteria for OSCARS and then open your mouth.

I dont think TZP lagged behind in any way as far as screenplay, editing etc is concerned. It was pretty sensible & sensitive for me. It was a very well made movie with very nice performances specially by Amir. I dont understand what you mean by too many expressions.
Maybe you like John Abraham, who has one fixed expression.
Whereas Slumdog which is a good movie specially the concept, has a numer of loopholes. It was more of 'Bollywood made easy' for the western audience.
What is the criteria for Oscars when Dharavi or Salaam Bombay were much better movies ? The problem is the good Indian movies (Commerial/Art) compete in the Foreign category with other great movies from Italy, France, Japan etc whereas Slumdog had just to compete with average Hollywood productions

'Bollywood made easy'
absolutely. academy awards are not known to be the fairest in deciding which movies are the best. its got glamour, though.

self respected&nationalist Indian shud not feel proud for 8 f
by Saugata Banerjee on Feb 24, 2009 09:43 AM  | Hide replies

what is it? is there any thinking in mind of india as how they r being insulted?
u do not deserve it like this how it is given!
in fact, rehman gave his worst music in "slumdog.." , compared to his earlier music in 'jodha akbar', 'lagan', roza, bombay etc!
freida pinto acted as normal as a little less from new comer in hindi film!
story line is hypothetical! jamal was asked all the question from his life experience only! got up story!
poverty show? hundred times more poverty , reality were shown in mrinal sen, shyam benegal movie!
do u want to tell that indian could not make such a film to get a oscar till date!
if the talent is appreciated then, the every film of satyajit roy's, mrinal sen's , shyam benegal etc would have got oscar award!
was there no merit in "mother india", "lagan" or "TZP"etc brilliant indian film or other indian language?
don't u find any indian film to get nominated for oscar untill a foreigner make movie on india's poverty porn?
if u r a self respected and nationalist, definitely u will not be proud for these 8 oscar as we have the believe in ourself that we had made, will be making good films more than 'slumdog.’
indian, please understand, where u r being striked!
i would definely tell that to-day is our humiliation day internationally!
i would not have bothered if foreigner r insulting us onesidedly in their own area(outside india) but i am bothered as how shamelessly my indians r singing their song!
do u deserve to be slum dog?

It is quite obvious over indian audience have no clue of criteria for OSCAR nominations.
Also, Everyone is crying over poverty exposed. What aboit child labor, child molestation, sexual molesttaion, rape, police officers abusing people etc???
Don't we celebrate all the above.

sdm got recognition due to indian masala
by Guest on Feb 24, 2009 09:30 AM  | Hide replies

If u guys notice, this film has Not been famous in US due to its slums or poovrty, but because it showed A PERFECT masala of indian cinema in a very Fast Trake with typical Rahman's music.
It is time for Indian directors too, come at internation level to expose indian masala movie in english but with little change in PATTERN (of lenthy movie and too much of songs). They will surely get success and here in US A large mass will like this indian masala. And they can show the better half of INDIA!!!

slumdog - indian movie?
by shawn on Feb 24, 2009 09:26 AM  | Hide replies

I am surprised at people in the media designating slumdog as a Indian movie. It is nowhere a Indian movie - it is a British movie(as BBS rightly claims) to entertain the Americans.
The only genuine 'Indian' achievement at the Oscars has been 'the Smiling Pinky'.
I hope Danny Boyle is not conferred the Bharat Ratna

Millionaire dog's slum
by mang on Feb 24, 2009 08:35 AM  | Hide replies

I'm planning to make a movie called Millionaire dog's slum. The plot goes something like this.. A pet dog of a millinaire goes missing while boarding the plane at Mumbai's internataional airport and lands up in Mumbai's slum. It starts enjoying the liberty at slum than its place at millionaire's house. Whether its owner convinces the dog to return home is the climax of the movie!!

There are many movies like that have come in Hindi and other languages. Except that instead of pets, the hero will go from his palace to the slum and live ( enjoy ) the freedom and his owner ( parents ) get him back to the palace after getting a slum bahu, etc. and many lessons and lectures on human equality, socialism, poor vs rich, etc..

Happy Shivratri

Wish you all a Happy and Subh Shivtratri. Our rediff people are busy in Oscar party and forget to wish India people on the festival which is one of the most celebrated within Indians, in India and outside. Thank you! We need a media source that is for Indians and share Indian values. What I see here most is foreign views and foreign values. There is nothing Indian about rediff. It may be that is sold to Yahoo. Beware!
