Unnecessary Criticism
by ria kh on Feb 24, 2009 02:19 PM

I haven't understood the logic of criticism against SM.
Has the Director ever said that it represents India? He has just made a movie after all?
Is making movies on slums banned in India?
Should we only make movies on Malls and Supermalls?
Is it because it has won so many awards?
Are we afraid to see the muck of India?
ARE WE AFRAID OF REALITY?

Most of the people here on rediff blog belong to RSS parivar that is why they do not like a film like Slumdog Millionare. Baniya mentality people have exploited people over 100 years and cannot see a common or a poor man become a hero. This is your nationalism? na. People are enjoying the film and you narrow minded people have come together and writing anything against the film. You will beg to go US or any European country and make your livlihood there but do not accept their culture and talk about your fake nationalism.

dont bring Rss into it. It is even your Samaj wadhi party people like Amitab Bachan criticised the movie.Entire Bollywood stars are not terribly happy with it but some of them openly expressed it.Eve some Muslim names in this blog have criticised it. I can understand your hatred for RSS.

Slums are a relatively modern phenomenon in India, when you take its 5000 year history as a whole. They really originated under the British.

I think, they awarded oscar to Slumdog as a business ploy. With the west reeling under recession, may be they want more business opportunities to be opened up in India. That is why this ice-candy approach

No. I dont think they can influence people's decision this way. It is just that people are more realistic now and empathise with the character shown.

Only Mr. Subhash Ghai understood the intent and content of an Oscar award movie. He brilliantly included the white skin personalities first and carried out the task of winning. Some mimmick songs were translated in english which could influence audions. The hero resembles like Barack Obama who is selling hot for being slum boy.Alas! The producer had to depict some facts of our country for winning which the west is very keen to glorify.Hope our netas will see the movie and try to change the scene.

Slumdog Distortion
by Neetiman Kumar on Feb 24, 2009 02:09 PM  | Hide replies

Well, the Son has not captured all the essence of his father's article. In that article, Sreenivasan Sr. had wondered why the author, Vikas Swarup, allowed his novel to be changed so drastically. That is the main grievance for people like me, who happened to read the novel first, and then see the movie. The novel's handling of the subject was totally distorted in the movie. They changed everything in the novel, the plot, characters, scenes, even the questions asked.... Only the pattern of Q & A remained to tell the story. It is this distortion of the novel, i.e. adding terribly dirty scenes and exaggerate the slum poverty, with the sole purpose of winning awards in the West, that makes one angry.

So, the novelist should come out in the open and tell us why he allowed his novel to be butchered like this.

The novel in its original shape would still have made a great movie, but then it would not have guaranteed Golden Globes & Oscars.

The answer is simple... Show me the Money honey.. and I shall give you anything you want. Have we not seen the Gandhi family selling his belongings to an American for a few million dollars, who in turn is ready to auction them for a few million dollars more?

Reason we are rejoicing
by mahesh on Feb 24, 2009 02:07 PM

Apart from all the controversies that are being raised --Forget about Boyle and western perceptions about indian or exploiting poor or what so ever for that reason ... many of us would agree to the fact that we got recognition for 3 indians for their world class competencies...They have opened a door for more talent to be found in indian film industry...and gave a reason to rejoice.Salute to them..

He could have just written that he's a TAMILIAN.

That's why he's a champion of Slumdog.

Just because we wanna support A R Rahman, we shouldn't root for a film which nothing but an attempt racially vilify India.

Better Movies
by srinivas guda reddy on Feb 24, 2009 02:05 PM

I seen/enjoyed much much better and quality music from AR in his previous movies/albums. Movie story also looks normal and simple (there are many movies in India cinema on same concept).

Two inferences I can made from this oscar.

1. Oscars are not ultimate awards on performance

2. Oscars quality might going down..

By saying this I am not underestimating teams performances. My sincere wishes to winners.

Corrupt oscars

From childhood days, I was of the beleif that Oscar award is a mark of quality. But seeing a second grade masala film bagging more than half dozen, I doubt the crediblity of the awards. Or is that rest of holywood movies are crap? Or is it Oscars have become corrupt that this is a bribe for showcasing Indian slums which is a legacy of 50 years of Congress rule and 100 years of British rule. Congratualtions for Indians who received the awards. Keep potraying Indian slums, backward regions. You will keep getting awards. NO big deal.

God saved us from Advani and BJP who almost divided India in five years on the basis of religion. They professed hatred among India people, they are biggest enemy of the country. Don't blame congress for every reason

The whole world knows the following facts about India:

1) Shree Rama sene harassing woman in the name of Moral policing
2) Shiv Sena harassing men/women in the name of regional identity
3) RSS burning and torturing Muslims and Christians
4) States like UP and Bihar where people struggle to get one square meal a day
5) We cannot peep out from the train windows in the early morning
6) Rape and Murdering by high profile people is common
7) Black roads becoming Red because of Pan spitting all over

The list goes on ...

We are not ashamed all of the above facts, we will not correct it but we prefer to live with it.

However when somebody points the same to us we are insulted.

As long as we don't clean up our own mess people will still get to see movies like Slumdog millioniare-"Jai Ho"

I want to make a movie please
by Bald Head on Feb 24, 2009 01:48 PM

Yes.

My movie will have no background music, because in real life there is no tragic or enlivening music played by anyone according to your situations.

My movie will have songs no doubt, because most of us like and enjoy them - may be I will use songs in sequences where the characters dream or reflect on some event, some plans, some relationships.

My movie will give to the story and the portrayal of characters by the actors pride of place, with proper lighting and camera angles which help viewers to appreciate the facial expressions and body language of the actors.
The actors will use normal conversational language, with no artificiality, exaggeration, unnecessary pauses and intonations, raising or lowering of voice etc.

The scenes will be filmed mostly in real, existing buildings and locales with no sets, computer graphics etc.

The story itself will be narrated in a free flow, with flash backs coming in only if absolutely necessary. If necessary there will be stunts - but without impossible and unreal dives and debasing music for the punches and kicks etc.

The film will be made in one of the Indian languages with actors who know that language and can speak it properly, without any dubbing by third persons.

......

Well, time for us to wake up from dreams like the above and start working in our usual ishtyle...

Oscars or no Oscars....
