Ilayaraja is probably the greatest composer in modern times. Rahman is a dwarf near him - he is a great Sound Engineer not a composer.

What is a 'sound engineer' a b? could you please explain?
on the other note, if Ilayaraja is greatest why only a couple of his work were dubbed and release in hindi, on the other side- Not only Rahman's so many albums were released in hindi but also he has been part of so many international projects.

An album relasing in hindi is surely not a yardstick to judge a better composer ! Period. In other words, popular dosent mean better. While Rahman is the best among the lot, anybody who knows his music ( and has heard Ilayaraja) will most definitely swear by Ilayaraaja over Rahman any day.Rahmanis probably a "smarter" composer, and makes it to point to refrain from using "carnatic"based raagas in his hindi compositions, or rather simplifies than to suit "hindi" tastes, which probably explains his success in bollywood. Rahmans background scores are very poor compared with what Raja could dish out - very often, the background score would set the mood of the movie. Overall, it is ridiculous to compare really. But to go quote anold proverb- donkey's would'nt recognise the fragrance of camphor !!

I mentioned 'hindi' as an example. An album dubbed in any other language means that it merits to reach greater audience.
If popular doesn't mean better; then what is 'better' cannot be judged by anybody either!

Regarding your point that he refrains from using carnatic music in his compositions, you sound like carnatic music is not popular with 'hindi' tastes.
I can give you examples of carnatic raagas being used in some popular compositions right from the era of K. L. Sehgal.
For background music, again you dont really have a basis.
And please refrain from using such offensive quotes as unless you prove ur point, it may hold good for you as well.

P.S - If it is ridiculous to compare then please dont, topic wasnt started by either of us and nobody forced us to post.

You must be stuck in a time warp along with IR. Rahman goes to the core of basic sounds and all his compositions are experiments in sound and the evocative experience of those sounds. Hence he participates also as a listener and not a mere composer. IR followed a bandwagon of composers in his time who composed per formula. While some of IR's are to be cherished one should not forget the utter crap he also dished out. I have not seen another music director bring about consistently divergent patois and meld it almost seamless as ARR. To prove his point was the unplugged vocals SP, Hari, KK, Sujatha etc gave with just the hint of piano in the background to prove that he just does not need the Orchestra but he has also proved what he can do given one.

Good old times, eh? Grow up people! Time is going in a fast forward manner. If Ilayaraja IS the best, then why Maniratnam jumped for Rahman. Just show me one music piece by ilayaraja which can match ARR magic in bombay theme music? Ilayaraja WAS a phenominen in tamil music. But ARR IS and will be a phenominen in the world music. You see- World does not end in Tamil nadu!

You are talking about world music? It is a pity that people really don't know Illayaraja. He is the only Indian to have written symphony scores. Illayaraja is not popular in hindi film music, but is much appreciated in Europe, the home of western classical music and has worked extensilvely with symphony orchestras (Royal Philarmonic, Budapest orchestras) in Europe and is rated as one of the best composers in western classical music. That he is not know and appreciated in Hindi is your loss, not the world's! Rehaman is good, but please do not compare him with Illayaraja. Even Rehaman himself wouldn't appreciate it.

Afiroz, shows how ignorant you are. Illayaraja has experimented with music like nobody else. He has written counter points for classical indian melodies, used the bass guitar differently, writing counter points for the bass guitar (can you imagine that!). Ask any western music teacher about his chord progressions. I am sure they will have a lot to say. So, please do not talk about experimentation or the lack of it from Illayaraja. While Rehaman has only worked with Lloyd Webber, Illayaraja has worked with the Royal philarmonic orchetra and many more such groups. That should say something about this man!

I think you are not ready to accept the fact that even Illayaraja tried to do music like Rahman listen to Friends, did you forget Hey Ram? But he couldn't do it like Rahman. Rahman is unique in his own way and so is Illayaraja. Guys stop saying that only Illayaraja used pure Carnatic you should say this only if you know Carnatic, listen to Rahman's songs and they have a strong classical base. Illayaraja hardly did Hindustani based and always churned his comfortable melody and folk based which was then liked, then came AR who brought in new sound and revolutionized the music. WHY DOES YUVAN THE SON OF ILLAYARAJA MAKES MUSIC LIKE RAHMAN??????? WHY DOES KARTIKRAJA FAILS TO IMPRESS???

Life of AR Rahman
by Anam on Oct 20, 2008 06:43 PM  | Hide replies

Earlier Non-film work-
During his stint in advertising, he released his first album, of Muslim devotional songs, titled `Deen Isai Malai'. This was followed by `Set Me Free', an album of English songs which was the launch album of singer Malgudi Subha, by Magnasound, where Dileep set the songs to tune. Both the albums went unnoticed in the market.

Introducing new talents-
Rahman is well known for introducing several unknown voices into the main stream playback. He has shown an extraordinary flair for experimenting with untrained voices. Singers who have worked with him have repeatedly said that Rahman's open approach during recording sessions has spurred them on to giving their best. Suresh Peters,Shahul Hameed, Srinivas, Shankar Mahadevan, Harini, Anupama,Dominique, Minmini, Shubha, Febi, Hema Sardesai are some of the singers who have thrived after the advent of Rahman. Singers like Hariharan, Sujatha, Unnimenon have had successful comebacks in the industry after working with Rahman. Unnikrishnan, Bombay Jayshree and Nithyashree Mahadevan who are successful Karnatak classical vocalists have been introduced into film playback by Rahman.

AR Rahman- The Turnaround
by Anam on Oct 20, 2008 06:42 PM  | Hide replies

Dileep's family embraced Islam following his father Shekhar's illness and passing away. His mother’s belief in spiritual healers grew stronger after his family went through a rough patch following his father’s death. Sufi saint Karimullah Shah Kadri changed their lives with his strong spiritual influence and that led to the conversion to Sufism. But it wasn’t an instantaneous decision — it took them 10 years to convert. Rahman feels that the change in religion was like washing away his past.

Rahman spent 5 years in advertising where he went on to compose more than 300 jingles. Rahman did a lot of popular ads like those for Parry's, Leo Coffee, Boost featuring Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev, Titan, Premier Pressure Cooker, Hero Puch and Asian Paints. The jingles that he composed for the Leo Coffee ad starring Aravind Swamy and the Asian Paints ad directed by Rajeev Menon also won him awards and recognition. He also won an award for composing the theme music of the Madras Telugu Academy's Spirit of Unity Concerts.

Studio-
Rahman started a small studio of his own in 1989 'Panchathan Record Inn' , attached to his house. This would later develop into one of India's most well equipped and advanced recording studios. In his established state of the art sound and recording studio he began experimenting in sound engineering, design and production. He also began a collection of sound samples, creating one of the most comprehensive sonic libraries in Asia.

Please keep your religious ideas and opinions to yourself. If you like allah worship him but dont try to push your beliefs here. As far as I am concerned hindu gods are great as hindu religion is very tolerant to other religions but at the same time i dont mind others worshipping their gods. it is a personal thing and lets keep it that way . please dont spoil india's name by bringing religion as a boundary between people's heart

Life of AR Rahman- Childhood & Musical Background
by Anam on Oct 20, 2008 06:41 PM

Rahman was born A.S.Dileep Kumar on the 6th January 1966, in Madras, to a musically affluent family. His father R.K.Sekhar was an arranger and conductor in Malayalam movies and had worked under the likes of Salil Chowdhary and Devarajan.Dileep started learning the piano at the tender age of four.At the age of 9, his father passed away following a mysterious illness. The pressure of supporting his family fell on Dileep. At he age of 11, he joined Illaiyaraja's troupe as a keyboard player. It was his mother Kareema Begum who encouraged him to follow in his father's footsteps. But all this had an adverse affect on his education. Infrequent attendance and an unaccommodative management forced him to shift schools from the prestigious Padma Seshadri Bal Bhavan to the Madras Christian College and finally he dropped out of school altogether.

Don't you all agree that he made it big in tamil films first. You remember the songs sometimes because of lyrics also. Those lyrics were of vairamuthu... kanduondein, Rhythm.. songs all classics of ARR written by one and only one vairamuthu. Today the fire is not there because they do not work together. Lyrics is very important for a song to be hit.
