ARR Best but ......
by on Jan 25, 2008 08:56 AM

ARR is a whiz kid to Indian music especially hindi. Agreed he changed how music should be rendered and composed to an extent. He got epics like Roja, Bombay, Lagaan, Taal and recent Guru in his pocket when its hindi. There is no doubt about this and one would be fool if I say he won't compose good music.

But this time in short the music of Jodha-Akbar is not so impressive. One can say that ARR music always tend to be overlooked initially and would love when you listen for the more than 3 times, but this time it was as BFN. Here is my view as a music lover on much awaited Ashutosh's JA.

Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah: This song is sung very well and is impressive. But when we compare with the altitude where ARR is, this composition doesn't match. Its a tune from his 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh' for which he bagged prestigious National award. ARR is very famous because of his continuous experiment with classic and being contemporary. This is a good song but not to his altitude. Can listen and keep as a collection.
Jashn-E-Bahaara: Just another so called bollywood song with ARRs flute, but no comparison to Roja.
Khwaja Mere Khwaja: Mix of both Hindustani classical and soofi (what ARR is best of). ARR rendered this excellent. But definitely NOT a great qawwal, I say it again not a good one. Lyrics are so so, that is not up to a mark where God is being praised. When you look at his own past record in Qawwals he had an very well rendered and composed qawwal in %u2018Meenaxi %u201

JA Music - ARRs last historical venture
by thinktank on Jan 24, 2008 08:01 PM  | Hide replies

ARR himself told that he wont compose anymore for historical based movies and this could be the last one. Probably he knows best that how difficult it is to score for a historical movie and if you recall his not to be remembered scores were all of historical based ones(Aamir's Mangal Pandey is a great example).
It is the comtemporary music which makes to reach to the masses.

A lot depends on how Ashutosh is going to picturise them, remember ARRs Thiruda Thiruda (Chor Chor) is still one of his best compositions but did very poorly at that time because of mani's mistake. Hope Ashutosh dont do that this time (but inner feeling says he is going to do that, because in swadesh it is rahman who bailed out ashutosh).

I dont think he has scored a poor track for this JA. Infact it is good if it is not too good. That Javed ali's and qawwali are his master strokes.

I think it is a good album and a lot depends on movie and after watching rahman for years definitely one can say it would be more apt for the movie according to the script. Ashutosh and ARR are having a nice understanding so ARR would have given the best what Ashu required. Lets see what happens on Feb 15

Good but not the best
by on Jan 24, 2008 07:52 PM

the music of JA is good but not GREAT. Thast may be because of the kind of music. Rang de basanti was like WOW..!! but that film was like that. Film needed that kind of music, like wise for JA only light music suits. ARR is the best .no one can denie it....only he can create most versatile music according to the demand...

AR Rahman - The Great!
by aj on Jan 24, 2008 03:30 PM  | Hide replies

ARR is simply the best music director in the current era. Like someone said here, only ARR can compose any kind of music, contemporary, historical, melodious, hip-hop, rock, ...u just name it.

I accept that the trio SEL are also very good, but they have limitations. They may not be able compose music for a movie like JA and make an impact, like ARR always does.
TZP music is very good, but lets not compare that with ARR's work. Both SEL and ARR are in different class of their own.
And please for God's sake, lets not get Himesh Reshmiya in all this discussion. Its totally irrelevant to talk abt Himesh and Music at the same time. There is no relation between them. Himesh can only howl and make other singers howl, which BTW is complete trash!

ARR is amazingly mind-blowing, SEL are very good and HR sucks. Thats the bottom line...

You guys are comparing this historic movie with other Genres. Traditionally ARR's music builds more after the movie is released. Wait for some time, you will find out, the music of JA is very good but not great. And please, dont compare him to Himesh & co, suicide will be a better word for that.

Sleek Marketing

Even if the music is average yet the websites like Rediff are going to bang about it, it creates an illusion the music is good.

If you hear a mediocre song more than five or six times it normally looks haunting the next time.

Guru's music was one such case.

I havent bought his CD yet so I am ineligible to comment about this movie

Indian audiences aint educated (commonsense) lik e the Europeans (I am not including Yanks here)
to figure out this marketing conspiracy be it music or any product.

For Indians now Money flows and these reviews and other cheap entertainment provides an easier way for the music companies to eat them.

You are absolutely right! If you hear a song for 5 -6 times and the media says it is The Best album of the year and prasies aplenty and what not.. then even a mediocre fair sounds WOW! I have not yet heard JA, but I agree with you on Guru.. that was bad, if you please!

Just because people are obssesed with the fact the ARR is the best, does not mean he will always deliver the best. He is human and I guess law of averages has just caught up.

GUys n Girls
by seventh sun on Jan 23, 2008 06:41 PM

Listen to the songs for some time....ALL THE SONGS ARE SIMPLY AMAZING !!! Its surely one of the best creations by rahman....He's kept the tunes very simple and really matches the theme of the movie!! Just like all the previous Rahman Albums...people will hate initially(and blatantly comment on it)....and 2-3 weeks from now each and every song will be on tip of everyone's tongue !!!

ARKA
by on Jan 23, 2008 05:56 PM  | Hide replies

It makes me feel sad to think about the negative reviews...people always do this. Whenever ARR comes up with a new album, they dismiss it as they always compare it to his previous releases. I remember my parents hating Lagaan songs and in a months time they bought a second CD for the car. JA songs are different, very much in-sync with the movies theme. I know that initially you just like the title and Jashn songs but ARR has done a great job. Just wait and see...time only will tell - oh ya, provided the movie does justice to the songs and also offers a engrossing story line :)
