No, the honor goes to Lata Mangeshkar and Md Rafi. At the end of the day everyone has his/her own choice (pasand apna apna) but these two have been consistently rated as #1 by musicians and the community.

Lata and Asha cannot retire, why should they? They can still command their voice and tone. Did a Subbalakshmi retire? Or a Bhimsen? Even though old, a voice trained so lovingly never can get bored.

It is the fault of the music composers who bring out screeching tunes. Heck , with those tunes, even Alka Yagnik or Vasundhara Rao would sound screechy.

Rafi is the best, gosh what control, and what variety in one single song. It is hard to give up with this variations in one song.

There is a benagli singer, Sandhya Ray, who though not with a gifted voice like Lata, is as complicated singer as Rafi.

Both of them should retire for god's sake. They were excellent but now they have past their prime. At their hey days they were like mumbai mafia and never allowed others to come up. They realized being best is not sufficient to stay atop. Simple logic that in 1 billion indians how only these 2 always remained top. Some maharashtrians or so emotional that they never want to hear anything bad about them.
In kannada they say 'Just because father planted the tree you cant hang on it'
Its ok if they entertain people who still likes them. But its unbearable that they still sing in the films. Its a mix of comedy and sadness to hear young heroins singing in the films with a shivering(afterall asha and lata are so aged now) voice!

As Ashaji said, the current bunch of music directors record the singer's voice first & then mix it up with the instruments. This is called "track" system. There is only one music composer who does it in the traditional way of using live musicians to perform with the singing. He is "Maestro Ilayaraja". What say?

the people who doest not know about computer and music ,talk about old sysytem of composing.now all music dirctors have computers and other system, why they can't produce music like AR Rahman.
so it needs creativity. Rahman can do large live orchestra. but in this fast world we require to use computer. lets us use it.now computer is life.

Asha Bhosle in concert
by Nazir Patel on Apr 19, 2008 09:49 AM  | Hide replies

I have been to every Asha Bhosle concert and yes her fans most likely the same give her deserved ovations and if anyone heard her sing one classsical song which she sang here in Toronto the lady has a unbelievable command of the sur. What an Alaap she pulled. It was the best part of the concert. My only complaint is that this tour is dubbed 75 years of Asha. The concert did not reflect that. She was here in 2007 and probably in 2006 and even 2005 the same repetitious songs. I was hoping she would sing something different be it old or new and instead she sang again Piya Tu , Aye Mera Dil from Don and then asked the audience which one they like better - hers or the remix - she was surely referring to Sunidhi's version. She had sung the song last year. She also sang quite a few songs of singers who have passed away. She did sing one song of Lata didi Lag Ja Gale Ke Phir from Woh Kaun Thi when she should have sung Shokh Nazar Ki Bijliyan which she sang for the same movie- after all she is presenting 75 years of Asha. Amit Kumar spent close to 15 mins doing some silly things before singing the original version of Roop Tera Mastana. He was telling a whole story about how the song came to be.
The ones she sang I have already heard her sing in the past concerts. And she has sung for so many music directors some melodious songs. Why does not she give chance to sing some of her memorable hits of other music directors instead of the same Khayyam and R.D ?

Very curious to know. Please do reply.

Thanks

I put my email . If you send me yours I will provide details. It is to her credit that fans show up for her concerts and inspite of the repetitious songs that she sings every year she still gets lots of clapping. I am not too thrilled. I had sent a list of songs to her Bombay address for consideration and except for Jhumka Girare I did not find any of my suggested songs that reflected her 75 years of singing.
She did not sing Parde Me Rahne Do.
Towards the end she did bring down the house with her rendition of Nagada Nagada from Jab We Met ( sonu nigaam's song )
I wish someone who went to carnegie can describe the concert in detail.
I did not like Amit Kumar's selection of songs either except Roop Tera Masatana and before he sang that he wasted so much time trying to explain how that song came to be. They deliberately waste precious time of a limited time concert so they sing as few songs as possible and then come back again to sing once again Piya Tu or Dum Maro Dum and make some dollars.
Here is the list I sent.
Khatooba Khatooba - Alibaba Aur 40 chor 1980
Koi Aaya Dhadkan Kehti Hai Lajwanti
Aaja O Mere Raja Apna Desh 1972
Jaadugar Qatil Kohinoor
Khat Likh De Aaye Din Bahar Ke 1966
Jab Chali Thandi Hawa Do Badan 1966
Yehi Woh Jagah Hai Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi 1965
Aaj Ki Raat Anamika 1973
Apne Dil Main Jagah Dijiye Hawas 1974
Hae Bichhuwa Jheel Ke Us Paar 1973
Sheeshe Se Pi Phool Aur Patthar
Koi Shahri Babu Loafer
Tauba Tauba Mr.Natwarlal 1979
Aankhon

Amit sang very well
by Aninda Bose on Apr 18, 2008 11:56 PM

As usual Amit Kumar was drunk and started offbeat with his first song "Ye Zameen Ga Rahi Hai" but then he got his act done well.
"Bade Achche" he renditioned differently at parts which touched your senses.
Asha - I was a little skeptic now as the legend's voice in previous functions came under suspect. But I think she did just right at Carnegie. Even Nitin Shankar, arranger and percussionist was fabulous. Good evening out!!

Pleased to find Indian audience and performers could use Carnagie Hall. Hindi film music from the golden days, definitely will live forever. And this performance will go down as something to remember.
