i also agree that the music of cheenikum is just ok, and is a repetetion of illai raajs's earlier tunes. when u listen to it second time it is even more boring. i wud rather hear illai raaja's south compositions.

i agree with arijith ...i think it's not surprising that all the comments critisising the review are from south indians, who seem to have formed a group. the review has never said that the music of cheenikum is bad, but the review mentions it is not illai raaja's best work. even aas a south indian i agree. i think people are just hurt bcoz they think illai raaja is like god who can do no harm. i praise the review for being brave to be pointing out the flaws.

It's about outlook....
by Arijit Chatterjee on May 18, 2007 10:43 AM  | Hide replies

Don't be biased....call a spade a spade....I am sorry but I will have to say that we need definitely a southern communion of cultural conglomeration....same is true even with the thoughts when it comes to food, basic socio-economy too....A friend of mine from TN the other day told me that if you eat meat the micro-organism swim accross upstream of your blood and sits in your head....grow up...there is life beyond illayaraja, A.R Rahaman, NTR,Rajni...guys!

Mr.Chatterjee...

I dont know abt wsouth-indians being biased, but defnitely most of the north indians have biased opinions about sotuh. No, i dont wish to discuss abt North-south divide here. But this is a general observation. South Indians are not frogs in a well. i can show you scores of composers who adopt Hindustani music or western music in their compositions.and its not just contemporary bollywood composers they admire/hate. south indians do listen to other music too.
I am a south-indian and for your information, i listen to everyone, right from Pankaj Mullick to Pt. Ravi shankar to even John Williams. i have grown on Naushad, SDB, Salil or for that matter even never-made-it-to-the-top ones like Chitragupta. The times ave changed. nobody is a frog in the well today. i can show you people who can listen to carnatic music and at the same time rock music too. or for that matter, ilaiyaraaja and say..rabindra Sangeet(i like it a lot).
People here are right...Rediff writes good reviews for Johars or Chopras music and here is some album which is definitely a cut above the rest. Yes, The album might not be Ilaiyaraaja's best but it is definitely among the best of what we get to hear today. how do you explain the fact that every website/blog writes a good review about this album but not rediff?
and please try to know the opinion of any musicologist(or atleast someone who is learning music) regarding the interludes/countermelodies/raagas used in this album.thats probably a much better-informed review.
please do not be under the impression that Southies are forming a group, afterall its an opinion. and please dont be so biased about southies.wherever there is good music, music lovers always admire, irrespective of any geographical location or whatever.

Is Rediff having a sadistic pleasure?
by Maheshwaran Irulappan on May 18, 2007 10:40 AM

Is Rediff.com is having a sadistic pleasure in provoking the sentiments of good music lovers? Why there is no alternate reviews still? Even the shits like KANK are given 2 reviews (May be you choose to lick Johar's boots for survival than patronising talents).

It would have been better if this review was not published at all rather than insulting 'Maestro' Illayaraja through the review of this "DEAF" Sonia.. Either learn to patronise good works from South else please make Rediff.com/movies specific for Bollywood only, just like indiafm. Don't get Bollywood high mileage at the cost of Kollywood.

You gave thumbs up to the shoddy music of Ta Ra Rum Pum just because it is a Yashraj movie. It is almost like pimping...

All the comments are from people from the southern part of India...take it or break it....the sense and sensibility of southern India is totally different than the rest....so this might be a southern yardstick of judging the author...!!

There you go!!! you set your scores on your yardstick....I never compared anyone with anybody...

And dude...don't even try to get there!!! You are from the Illayaraja,Rahman and Himesh generation...know your history...I don't have to compare...you have already made yourself a laughing stock by bringing Himesh R from your knowledge base. You guys don;t know about the rest of India ...so no point...to you rest of India is bollywood and hindi film music!!!

Forget bengali composers....Have you guys even heard compositions of Naushad,SD,OP Nayyar,Laxmi-Pyare,Shankar-Jaikishan...I can go on with a list of at least of 50 others....

Forget bengalis like Salil Chowdhury,Sd, RD, Hemant Kumar etc.

You mentioned semi-classical Malyalam, yes, that's the only place in south which is culturally rich!! From there, even veterans like Swathi Tirunal,Narayana Tirtha, Subrmanya Bharathiyar and Thyagaraja were always influenced by the Gharana music of hindusthani classical. So don't compare!!! Say your views no one is stopping you but don't try to scale and weigh the two when you have no knowledge about the two other than hearing Illayaraja,Rahman and Himesh et al.

a majority of General public in South India is Academically rich...but culturally and socio-economically poor...I am sorry!Well, We have have exceptions, sure. but mostly!!

They are like most of the mainstream americans, who think MLB league is the world championship, they claim that the NBA champions are the world Champions in basketball! Get out from the "frog-in-the-well" syndrome!!

A New yardstick for bad writing!!!!!
by poova prathapan on May 17, 2007 08:28 PM

How bad a review can be...definitely not worse than this.Sonia ,I guess has no Idea of what quality music is all about. You can dance to any trash beats looped out, But not all Music relieves your stress and transports you to another world...The music of Cheeni Kum does just that and effectively....Can anyone even imagine of composing such multilayered complex interludes with ensemble of live instruments in the songs and yet make us feel it as light and soft and mesmerising.HELL NO!!!!...Does the words arrangement, orchestrisation, rhythm mean anything to you?...I guess not.You cant even distinguish between a trumpet and a sax...then how can you distinguish good music from bad?You dont have to be an expert to enjoy good music but definitely you gotta have a pair of ears.

Raja's music - GOD'S OWN MUSIC

Pls listen first then write.

Sonia - Start Learning
by RED on May 17, 2007 02:32 PM

Dear sonia,
Let me repeat what I posted earlier.... 'Start Learning Music'.

Once you start playing Rajas notes you will find something new in you. His music will guide you to a new world.

........and Cheeni Kum is another classical melody. My Irish & Autralian friends are stunned by the way the music has been compiled in this Movie.

You must either start learning music or stop writing reviews.

As suggested by Walesking (here in redif post) U seriously owe an big apology to Raja and his fans.

cheers

'Cheeni Kum' is fantastic
by Jay Subramanyam on May 17, 2007 10:38 AM

Well folks. Since the day this review came up, I must have heard the CD of the film at least 20 times if not more and still cannot have enough of it. What pristine arrangements, what dulcet melodies and above all, what lovely singing by the current queen-bee of singers - Shreya Ghoshal.

I have always believed Raja Sir is the greatest film music director we have ever had and the music of 'Cheeni Kum' just fortifies my belief. He is a legend in the true sense of the word.

As for a nondescript Sonia Chopra, well, she must be close to being the worst music critic I have ever known. rediff, please listen to us all and sack this lady with immediate effect. It is a pain to read her shockingly trite reviews with such frequest rapidity, week after week.
