what good music is!!
by on May 21, 2007 06:21 PM

i just read the review and some of the responses. i am a chennaite. leave it. all the songs in cheeni kum are at least 20 years old and i have heard these songs with better and great orchestration. raja has simplified the same songs, understanding the plight of bollywood music lovers of not able to appreciate rich music. please dont argue abt his work as arguments never change anybody's views. time will tell what his achievements are and what good music is.

Respect others views
by kumar on May 21, 2007 03:51 PM  | Hide replies

Guys,
I immensely enjoyed this album, especially "jaane do na" song..ofcourse , the original "jothe jotheyali" from geetha was always my favourite..I have listened "jaane do na" atleast 20 times..
But I am appaled by the reader's comment here..It makes me feel that we indians have forgotten respecting others views. Ofcourse this is just reviever's opnion which might not be general publics opnion. Why don we just accept this truth and enjoy the music?? why you guys expect , the author's review to be same as your review?? Why these harsh words?? Cant we be more sensible?? If we read any comment in discussion boards, I can see only harsh words, criticism, regional/religiion issues...All these from educated indian public...Where are we heading to?? Guys, lets be some more senitive and start respecting others views..

Kumar,
Did you know that "Geeta" was composition of Illairaja too. I still like the original song "joteyali joteyali". The depth of words in the original, and the meaning is so wonderful. but the new song doesnt really have that flare to become a classic.

The north nowadays need a crowd at any cost
by Rajaram on May 21, 2007 01:17 PM

Yes !
Just having 3 or 4 songs will be ridiculous to you - the northies !
Because unlike in the south, you always expect a big crowd in everything !!

4 or 5 heroes.
3 or 4 heroines. ( one heroine will be shared )
atleast 2 guys for the music.

and the result ! noise, noise all over !

No artist in the north at present has the self confidence of standing alone and gain applause.

See this Amithab ! At any cost, he had to peep in as a guest appearance in Abhishek's movie to promote his son !

All this I tell with my due respects to real north indian giants like Naushad, SD Burman, RD Burman etc.

I am afraid but very much like a section of bong community (I am a bong) the majjority of General public in South India is Academically rich...however culturally and socio-economically poor...I am sorry!Well, We have have exceptions, sure.
They are like most of the mainstream americans, who think MLB league is the world championship, they claim that the NBA champions are the world Champions in basketball! Get out from the "frog-in-the-well" syndrome guys!!

and sir, Rediff deserves all this thrashing..if...i repeat..if it comes with a great review of album "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom" or any other new album hitting stands. Listen to JBJ..its computer-gadget-ish and noisy. wonder whats happening to the better lot of today's composers- Shankar-Ehsan-Loy.
atleast Cheeni Kum is enjoyable..with a very fine blend of synthesizer stuff and real acoustic music.

- not a southie, not a northie...But a music lover.

Mr. Chatterjee.
i dont know about South Indians, but you seem to be having biased opinions about them.Today, nobody is a frog in the well and if you think that South indians are so..then probably you are one too.
I am not arguing for south-indians but i am giving a neutral opinion.yes, i am a south-indian, but that didnt stop me from listening to Naushad or Anil Biswas or Pankaj Mullick, C.Ramchandra or SDB or your(our) very own Rabindra Sangeet, which is my fav too.or forget the famous ones, even the lesser-achievers such as ChitraGupta, Hansraj Behl or Vanraj Bhatia. I like them (even i can quote 60 such composers) all. Please do not assume that South People rever only Rajnikanth and ilaiyaraaja.i dont know about Rajnikanth but definitely Ilaiyraaja deserves much more fame than what he has got.Reason:Please make any musicologist(or atleast anyone who has learnt music) listen to his songs and then ask his opinion. People like Naushad, Salil Chaudhary, R.D.Burman and pt.Hari Prsad Chaurasia have had high regard for Ilaiyaraaja.
Regarding Cheeni Kum album, it may not be ilaiyaraaja's best. But it is the best of what we get to hear these days.Rediff.com extols some musically-less-rich albums belonging to Johars and chopra productions or for that matter any not-so-good-album.and here is an album which has some nice songs with good orchestration which rediff says is disappointing when all other websites/blogs (plz verify) write positive review about the album.c'mon, atleast recruit a reviewer who knows the difference between a saxophone and a trumpet.and someone who understands what orchestration is.
Mr.Chatterjee, please check out the song "Saara Aalam" from Shiva-2006 album.Forget the entire song, let any othe composer today atleast conceive/compose the prelude of that song. Listen to it(in earphones) and you will know what ilaiyaraaja is. and if people are blasting the author here, its not abt South Conglomeration.its just abt good music...whereever it is..be it south or north..tamil..hindi..french or anything! plz dont have biased opinions abt south-indians..they admire anything good..as much as northies do.

I totally agree with AAkarsh. its all about music and I don't understand why all this northie southie discussion came up when its totally irrelevant. Lets talk about MUSIC guys.
Well, though cheeni kum is not Illayaraja's best it is certainly one of the best albums you get to listen these days. I loved Jaanedona..though it sounded like a typical Illaraja song...and as someone said about repeated voice and stuff...I am sorry to say but I don't agree to it. I thought shreya was the best pick for all those songs which were sung by her. She was sounding perfect as always...moreover grt musicians like Illayaraja, ARR etc. know who shud sing what to give us the best....well, thats my opinion anyways...so take it easy!!

Arijit Sen's remarks are an absolute disgrace and a slur on the South Indian community. How dare he make statements to the effect that 'South India is Academically rich...however culturally and socio-economically poor...'. It is not as though, Bengalis have any kind of cultural hegemony to make such bombastic claims above others. Just to inform him, I am a South Indian who has grown up listening to Naushad, Salil Chowdhury, Shanker Jaikishan, OP Nayyar et.al. and have the highest regard for them all. At the same time, I have also followed Raja's career right from his first film - 'Annakilli' - and based on his consistency and volume of work over the past 4 decades, I can vouchsafe that as a composer he is second to none. Being a South Indian and praising a fellow composer's work, does not necessarily mean that the person has turned a blind eye to the works of other legendary composers.

Before Arijit comes up with such disparaging remarks, he would do well to at least listen to the tracks of 'Cheeni Kum', which is one of the finest scores to have come out in the recent years and in no way, matches the kind of review it has been accorded by Sonia Chopra.

And before you beseech others to get out of the "frog-in-the-well" syndrome, you would do better to rid yourself of your own cloistered mindset, Mr. Arijit.

Jay

I really dont know why we always compare north and south, both are unique and rich in culture.
U ve to come down to south to know about its heritage in music, culture, lifestyle etc.
