Why are you talking about 1979 in 2007? If you want history lessons, learn this. M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar was the first actor to break the Rs. 1 lakh barrier in Asia. He did it in 1944 for the movie Haridas. K. B. Sundarambal was the first actress to break Rs. 1 lakh barrier in Asia. She did it in 1953 for the movie Avvaiyar.

What does all this mean? Nothing. Because they are from the past just like Amitabh. Rajini is the superstar of present. No one would deny Amitabh was great in lates 70s and 80s. But he lost his way to stardom after that. Rajini gained his superstardom in the 90s after the movie Annamalai.

AMITABH WAS THE SUPERSTAR OF THE PAST AND RAJINIKANTH IS THE SUPERSTAR OF TODAY

Peter, who gave you the figures of inflation? Check goldprice.org. In 1979 the price of gold was Rs. 5000 per ounce compared to Rs. 30000 per ounce. This would mean the inflation is only 6 times and not 40 times. So Rs. 1.5 crores in 1979 would mean Rs. 9 crores today and not Rs. 60 crores like you have claimed. You can check the following websites also which give inflation indices

http://incometaxindia.gov.in/ItInformation/CostInflation.asp
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_histo ry_of_India

Peter, if you want to make some claims learn to back it up with references. Otherwise the claims have no validity.

For me it is a simple calculation, just check with your Father the amount he used to get in 1979 & check how much a person gets in a similar grade today. Take for the example a lecturer grade used to get between Rs 600 -700 per month now today in 2007 he gets around Rs 25,000- Rs 26,000 . Now as per you calculation he should get only 6 times the amount that is between 36,00 to 42,00 %u2026but that is not the case Mr vikatakavi. Now in this case salary has increased by 40 times ,

Inflation is measured by comparing two sets of goods at two points in time, and computing the increase in cost not reflected by an increase in quality%u2026..it is a complex thing kid & not just by the price of Gold.

In a movie like Black which centered around Amitji, (It was a movie that realesed in 2005 dont start arguing that it was a copy of this and that) RK will fail miserably. Amitji is is undoubtedly the best. RK just pulls some stunts and styles that's it. RK cannot do roles like Sadma either.

Radhika,

whats the point in saying Rajni cannot do Black or Sadma?

Its not his forte!

He is good in his genre.

Wat u r saying is as illogical as saying Tom cruise cannot act in Tom and Jerry. Its not his forte!

Well said. Right on the money. Actors in Sadma and Black will fail miserably if they try Rajni style roles.

Who cares if rajni can't do roles like Sadma. Indian movies are about mass appeal and certain kinds of acting, personality and people persona. If you want to talk about acting, amitabh's roles were also quite stereo-typical. He could never do variety of roles like Nasiruddin Shah, Sanjeev Kumar, etc. There are/were much better actors in regional languages who never became popular outside their state. Kamal Hassan might be one of the best actor. But who gives a damn! He will never be popular because of his attitude. Then again if the discussion is about acting and variety of movies, why do we bother discussing about Indian movies ? The Indian movies which have variety are the art movies and no one watches them. Our movies and super stars about a particular style and about being people person. That's why Rajni and Amitabh are the most popular and considering all factors( not just acting) Rajni beats Amithabh.
