She Belongs to band of people who take pride in showing loop holes of Indian Society
by santhosh onkar on Jan 30, 2007 09:15 AM  | Hide replies

Rabindranath Tagore wrote JANA GANA MANA to praise the British Viceroy and today we sing the same as our National Anthem.
when india can sustain such blunders Deepa is nothing

One request to Deepa Mehta BE PROUD TO HAVE BORN in the this Country. you have thousands of Inspiring things to make a movie out of rather than portraying some erratic stuff for cheap publicity.

Why is everyone so insecure about this movie? It is a beautifully made movie.

Would you people rather watch dumb Bollywood movies instead?

And this is better than any movie India has ever sent for Oscars..

i doubt u watched the movie. its a shitty movie like fire and earth, if u watched them both. just because some bigots opposed them, they got hit and famous. but for that the loose narration and script, over-dramatisation (not in action) of sensitive issues make those movies far from classics and similar to many poor bollywood art films.

Water
by Rajiv Shivashankar on Jan 30, 2007 09:08 AM  | Hide replies

i have not seen WATER, or read it's story. The theme is courageous. The handling, I am told by my cousins who have seen it, is sensitve and muted. Telling the world what is wrong with our society is someting which needs strength of character, courage, and the burning desire to bring change to wrong traditions followed over centuries. Today we know it is a man who determines the sex of a child. Torturing a woman for not producing a son is criminal. The two daughters of a friend of mine recently performed his final rites. It was sad to see, but the courage of the girls i appreciated.
Let the world see the bigotry we practice, so that we have the sense to change for the BETTER. WATER must be screened in India. Let the VHP and other so-called Hindu organisations do something to develop the community, get rid of caste and gender divides, and uplift the weaker sections rather than preach nonsense to us.

Getting award from West for things we are NOT proud of
by Raghavendra Anahosur on Jan 30, 2007 08:19 AM

I dont agree with Deepa Mehta and the likes who make movies about India for which we are NOT proud of and expect awards from the West for the same. It is not a good sign for our society.

problem with these people
by PD on Jan 30, 2007 07:35 AM

I realize in general that "these" people will do anything for getting noticed on international forum. Meera Nair and Deepa Mehta had nothing else to show (of course good) so they show this type of stuff and fulfill their dreams of being noticed and talked about. I have a open challenge to them, Do come-up with either Muslim subject or come-up with good subject which will show India in a good way..!! I am sure both will shy away or will give some futile arguments..!!

by usman khawaja on Jan 30, 2007 07:10 AM  | Hide replies

religions are ideas in your head ive read satanic verses , seen the cartoons and appreeciate da vinci code as a thriller , this is art meant to entertain a nd provoke you the more you let it get to you the more brain dead you get as arts meant to be asking awkward and unnecessary question at time and yes some art is bad and evil but then there is a word called tolerance , icame out loving and believing more in islam from these debacles and i think protest actually makes these issues headlines , if you are offended ignore it , it always goes away . promise

Hi Usman,

Hope U R true to yourself when U wrote this message. Kindly spread it in your community that is one best thing you can do and I hope U R doing the same.

India being a secular country, I believe tolerance is much required than anything else. Seeing a human being as a human being than as a person from a particular religion is most important.

Finally any religion is just a way of leaving, and a matter of birth which one has born into. Brining timely changes is important. The way of living also introduces some wrong practices in course of time, which are to be cleansed as early as possible. Many of unacceptable practices in Hinduism like sati, caste systems etc. has been or are being cleansed, still there is a long way to go.

No religion calls for violence, it%u2019s always the wrong interpretation, and guidance and ignorance about ones own religion that leads to the same.

when i mean fight, I dont mean to say fight with violence , violence shoud never be the option, everything in your life should be done peacefully and remember fighting oneself - your ego, your pride etc. is the greatest jihad as the holy prophet pbuh had said. My message to all my hindu freinds, if you feel offended , yes fight it, protest it, get your message across, but dont limit it to religion only, fight against injustice, against opression, against racism, discrimination, casteism.

Looks like this journalist really directed some 'progressive' films :)
by Mangesh Kulkarni on Jan 30, 2007 04:15 AM

With all that heartfelt pain Mr. Suparn Verma feels about this film, what has he done himself? He has done some really groundbreaking work like Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, and written scripts for Qayamat, Zameen and Jaanasheen!. What great films :). Anyway, like a lot of people said, all this can only be written about Hinduism. He would not have the courage and guts to point out problems with Islam and Christianity, not ready to face a fatwa, I guess. May next film he will make will use Deepa Mehta's subject selection and marketing talents to rake up controversy and make some money.

arts and film, bad jounalism, politics...can take the back seats
by on Jan 30, 2007 04:10 AM

A little off the subject here..just want to point out that even before I reached the part where the interview starts, I felt that the writer of this report had something against the man he interviewed...I think as a reporter you cannot be bias...so I never bothered to read the interview. I also want to point out that nothing in this world is completely wrong or right...there's a lot of evil in our society and it has always been in all the societies. Well I am young but a little old school..so wanna ask a very simple question...would anyone allow a movie to be made about the "not so proud things" in his/her family? Don't we belong to a big family called 'India' or better still "mother india" There's got to be better solutions to the problem than some movie...arts and movies please take the backseat!!!! and yes i do thing a man who thinks homosexuality is sin and does not exit in india...is absolutely dumb..
