RDB doesn't need an oscar to prove its merit
by on Jan 18, 2007 02:03 AM

Can't expect a bunch of people whose knowledge about India is based on coffee table books to understand or appreciate RDB. Meanwhile it does not take much effort to grasp "Water"...what it is showing is nothing new and has prevailed in history of other countries and cultrures as well. Just take out the India element from "water" and it can be a story about just any other society.

Water is much better than rang de basanti
by Prashant on Jan 17, 2007 10:32 PM

If you really watch and compare these movies, 'water' is much better than "Rang De Basanti'. Compare acting, story and all aspects of the movie rather than just how well those movies did on box office.

Our entries are not up to par....sad but true
by Riaz Ahmed Shah on Jan 17, 2007 08:46 PM  | Hide replies

Since 1957 most of the official entries to the foreign film oscars from india were dubious if not down right pathetic..of the handfull of movies sent for selection ,the ones that were remotely good were
Mother India -1957
Nayagan - 1987
Salaam Bombay-1988
Parinda-1989
Thevar Magan- 1992
Bandit queen -1994
and lagaan 2001
of these only mother india ,salaam bombay and lagaan were shortlisted to the final five...
take for example lagaan, that year virtually all the other 4 entries were so much better in terms of story, visual impact..etc ,like Amelie from france and No mans Land from bosnia..
U might say that the west doesnt understand our kind of films ,thats the reason why we dont get acknowledged..but thats far from the truth...i mean ,how could the west identify with the cinematic appeal of Wuxia in Crouching Tiger(which won) ,or even award russia in the height of the cold war for a movie made there in 1980 ( thats like us awarding pakistan with a movie award during one of our many wars ) The oscars have been given to worthy world films ,spanning many diff styles of cinema...even the musical...its just our fault that we couldnt deliver one good movie....
Watch last years winner Tsotsi from South Africa..and u will realize what good cinema is..
And by the way "Water" was awesome just awesome...

You say that Lagaan's competitors were better.Bullshit and typical anti Indian thinking.Lagaan fully desrved its nomination. It's a terrific mix of art and commerce,a lyrical David vs Goliath or Asterix vs Obelix tale.It is a perfect movie that in fact has made it to a BBC list[compiled in mid-2006] of 'Fifty films to see before you die';Lagaan is 14th on this list.RDB is a wonderful film despite a flawed last quarter. It has its fans worldwide and will always remain a favourite for us RDB fans. Its exclusion by the Oscar committee will in no way diminish it.

The funny thing is the day Lagaan was released i was in the hall first day first show ( i even bunked my classes!) I was literally blown away when i saw it , it was one of the best bollywood movies i'd seen in a long time. In short i loved it! then the nominations came ..and i was ecstatic, only to be disappointed when it lost..i was truly sad, i was an Aamir fan at the time ,and i really thought the film deserved an award from the international community (like you said ,it did receive many) but one of my friends then asked me ,did i see any of the other competing films( i think there were 4 others ) ,when i said no,he said i had no basis to form an opinion other than from an emotional viewpoint.Thats when i took an effort to see the other movies when i was truly blown away by the surreal narrative of Amelie ,i thought to myself..this should have won...then i came across No Mans Land ,with its poignant yet tragic tale of the human need to fight other humans..i was speechless,it was less of a blockbuster and more of what great cinema should embody..not special effects, star cast but a compelling and touching story..Lagaan in comparison is like the bollywood equivalent of The Longest Yard or Victory! , a feel good movie meant to be a crowd pleaser and a blockbuster(which by the way is not belittling it ) .My criticisms of movies from India shouldn't be seen as an Anti-India stand..i'm proud of our movies ,as well as proud that i can criticize them. Its a sign of a healthy society to accept criticism where its due,as i appreciate your stand.
By the way , i personally feel that the great wave of Malayalam and Bengali parallel cinema from the late 70s and early eighties are not only world class ,but of such high standard ,that most cinema professionals study them now as coursework. For me Indian cinema is more than "bollywood" as i hope it is to you.

by prashant kiran on Jan 17, 2007 06:02 PM

Oscars can no more be considered as bench marks. you can judge the movie your self. the way indian market is growing in WEST/REST of world is just enough to say we will carve the future of Motion pictues.

Fair deal
by manjunatha somayaji on Jan 17, 2007 05:55 PM

I have watched both Ranga De Basanti and Water. I am really surprised by the idea that Ranga De Basanti should be nominated for Oscar and it is really ridiculous. can somebody write two sentence about the take 'home message' from this stupid film? People should watch Water first and then write if they agree with the decision.

Why are we obcessed with Oscar???
by Vinayak Patil on Jan 17, 2007 05:42 PM

Oscar committee is made up of US based 500 individuals. Also Only 30 look into foreign language films. Its very important to note that they cannot understand certain aspect of Hindi cinema. For example they cannot understand importance of songs in Indian movies. But most of Africa, Middle east, far east countries and russian people love hindi songs. They cannot understand language but they still sing these songs. Which shows difference between their thinking and rest of the world thinking.

We should stick to what we do best and stop comparing in this manner.

Water is a classic
by Sanjay M on Jan 17, 2007 05:23 PM

Water deserves a Oscar nomination ,pity India did not nominate it. To me, this film taught me who Gandhiji is. Mahatma Gandhi is shown only for a few seconds and that is more than enough to fetch a Gandhi photo to your Pooja room. You will literally cry thanking Gandhi. So Water=better film on 'Gandhigiri'(much more realistic). the moment you see Gandhi in this film... I am sure will remain in your life for ever.
