Umrao Jaan-review by Gullu Singh
by Natasha on Nov 25, 2006 10:58 AM

I have been avoiding seeing this new Umrao Jaan.I wish I would have stuck to my resolve.Saw Umrao Jaan&just read the review from Mr.Gullu Singh(Nov 3rd).I must say,i am not sure if Mr.Singh in fact has seen the classic Umrao Jaan from Muzzafar Ali.If he would seen that movie he wouldn't have made such comments as for instance:
1)Quote: "The dialogue by his father O P Dutta is worth mentioning.."
Please, give us a break Mr.Singh.I think Mr.Dutta did a very poor job of selecting Urdu words.I am not an expert in Urdu but i can still comment that it never even came close to the classic!
2)Quote:"Shabana Azmi as Khanum Sahib is great.."
Just watch her mother enact the role of Khanum Sahib and u can make out the difference b/w two.Her mother was terrific with total control and authority.Shabana Azmi looked nothing like her.No command over her dialogues and no authority in delivering them.
3)Quote:"If you are an avid lover of the Urdu language and Lucknowi tehzeeb then the film is a must-watch.."
I must say if you are infact an avid lover, avoid this movie..period!!!Its the worst enactment of Luckhnowi tahzeeb, and luckhnowi attire..and did i not mention Lukhnowi urdu!
Big Disppointment!!!

umrao jaan is pathetic
by Isha Sahu on Nov 07, 2006 01:44 AM

umrao jaan fails to deliver. the much hype which was created couldnt even help to bring the audiences to the theaters. the movie is too long and not at all well crafted. whether it is a remake or not..dutta's umrao lacks the lustre and grandeur as well as senstivity of the timeless classic which muzaffar ali made. all in all aishwarya looks stunning only till the time she doesnt open her mouth or do sne action.abhishek bachhan has been wasted(i could never understand why did he consider this movie at the first place). their(aby baby and ash)chemistry is thanda and smetimes forces ppl to yawn..i m highly let down by jp dutta.its a commercial dud.

Ash - Abhishiek chemistry is not attractive
by Jason on Nov 07, 2006 12:00 AM

Ash-Abhishiek chemistry is no where near Ash-Salman Chemistry. Their chemistry in Hum Dil De Chuke Samnam was instantly addictve to the audience. However this does not seem to be the case with Ash-Abhi. Ash is a One-(Wo)Man show in this movie

URDU???
by g Gupta on Nov 06, 2006 09:55 PM  | Hide replies

Gullu Singhji, Balle Balle !!!What you are referring to is Punjabi
inspired Bollywood speak which all our actors indulge in .I am amazed
that Ash ,doing a period film of this stature didn't bother to find out
the correct way to pronounce common words like 'khabar' and
'khuda'.Any rickshaw puller in any town of Uttar Pradesh could have
been a better consultant . Could the great Shabana ji and Javed
Akhtar , now the only people left in the industry who seem to know
the UP language ,not have corrected these glaring goofs. Except for
Shabana , everyone mispronounced , yes even the son of Amitabh
Bacchan--one of the finest Hindi speakers alive today.

Lovers of Lucknowi tehzeeb and Urdu language will love this film !
You must be out of mind ,Gullu Singh . Only people totally foreign to
the language might find some novelty. For people whose culture and
language is supposedly being projected , the inaccuracies are
appaling.
In the earliest scenes of the wedding in Faizabad , the village women
of 18th century wear nylon sarees in the the style of today. There
were no hand pumps when this story was written. As for the language
.....remember that a Tamilian actress like Rekha learnt to pronounce
correct Urdu in the old film. Why cdn't Ash ? and the rest of the cast ?
Watch 'Shatranj Ke Khilari" by Satyajit Rai to find the culture and
language of Awadh .

modern day courtesan and nawab?
by azim on Nov 06, 2006 07:48 PM

ash has neither the looks nor sensuality to play a courtesan, since she is too westernised and asexual in looks. she is miscaste. abhishek, well he looks like shaheed bhagat singh more than a nawab !! the entire film falls flat due to poor script, story and miscasting. poor show mr datta.

worst spoken urdu
by huma on Nov 06, 2006 01:42 PM

J.P.Dutta should have paid attention to the spoken urdu.Ash,Sunil Shetty,Divya Dutta and Aisha Jhulka couldnot do justice withtheir dialogues.the director should have given it a thought before releasing the film keeping in mind that Umrao Jaan was a poetess of and in those times Urdu was spoken with great command on the language specially in Lucknow.

all aish, umrao jaan
by steeve on Nov 06, 2006 11:22 AM

i never expected it as good as old one. But the new version was even worse. I did not find umraojaan at any point, it was all aish. Aish was very beautiful, but was like most beautiful woman of 2006... and never like mujhrawali. JP Dutta definitely could have done better.

Maneesha
The worst movie ever
by Maneesha on Nov 06, 2006 10:01 AM

The director should be sued for insulting the intelligence of the audience. Does he think that we are imbecile? Its a horrible movie; the dialogues are bad, they ring hollow, and have been acted out in the worst manner possible sans any expressions! And the pace of the story will put even the slowest tortoise to shame! There is no screenplay at all. I doubt if any of the actors excepting Shabana Azmi knew why they were there or what they were doing!

JP Dutta should gracefully retire lest an angry audience force him to quit.
