I loved this movie and watched it twice..it is a story well told..it is different from ususal formula movies.. i had not seen old umrao jaan. so no comparisons. ash is simply superb in acting.. after seeing this movie i cannot imagine another actress as Ash (may be same with those who had seen the old movie). i will give 4 stars for this. only minus point is it is little too lengthy. could have cut one song...

Umrao Jaan

I watched the movie yesterday with my husband and both of us are ardent fans of Aishwarya Rai. After three hours of endless high pitched songs, boring dialogues and a pathetic (no pun intended) movie, even Ash could not save this movie. If one wanted to see three hours of Ash this is the movie and in some scenes she does look ethereal but I felt that she looked most attractive in HDDCS and Devdas. I felt that Sanjay Leela Bansali would have done a better job than J. P. Dutta if he made this film. Abhishek Bachan had no love in his eyes only an angry young man look which was well suited for Yuva. Sunil Shetty had a limited role and the confrontation between Abhishek and Sunil was ridiculous at best. After the long movie we were emotionally, visually and mentally exhausted. We left the theater $20 poorer (plus few aspirins) but never so happy to remove ourselves from the vicinity of the theater where Umrao Jaan is playing.

Movie goer
Umrao Jaan

I dont think they can match the poetical treatment of story that was made in 1981 and Rekha who really tranformed herself to the role.

Ashwarayaa is nowhere near her. Abhishek looks younger and in fact he is.

Music cannot match. Its no way near the 1981 version.

The only emphasis in the movie is on gloss, and t he director is successful in that.

JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan: Movie Review
by Bhavdeep Singh Chadha on Nov 05, 2006 04:51 PM

The most fake rendition was done by Ameeran's mother and brother in the end. It looked very fake. The scene should have been a show-stealer with its depth. But JP Dutta failed here.
I think so that the choregraphy could have much much better.
There was opulence in the sets created but the grandeur was missing. The whole dance (mujra) hall looked very congested.
The use of candles for lighting was enriching but could have been better in parts of the Salaam song when Umrao dances while standing.
Anu Malik and Javed Akhter commands standing ovation. Their work add pace to the movie. The songs have very beautiful meaning and are very much part of the narration. The backgroud is impeccable, i must mention.
The lowest point of the entire movie is its very length and weak dialoges by OP Dutta. The dialoges do fail sometimes but excel in the other times.

JP Dutta's Umrao Jaan : Movie Review
by Bhavdeep Singh Chadha on Nov 05, 2006 04:49 PM

If you ask what me reaction was after watching the first day first show of Umrao Jaan.., here it is:

The movie began really good. I loved the depiction of the Awadhi style of talking of Ruswa. Very real. The first rendition of ik Toote Hue Dil Ki by the lonely Umrao gave me goosebumps. I was really moved by the heaviness in Ash's voice. It really depicted her pain.
If you ask about the characters, many were beautifully etched. Umrao was perfect. Comparatively less words (than Rekha's Umrao) and more emotions. Shabana's portrayal of Khannum was fab especially her last scene. It really made me cry for the first time for Khannum Sahib in the whole movie.
Abhishek's role was too streched, i think so. Tjis really made the movie lengthy before the intermission. It really needed editing.
Suniel's Faiz Ali was limited but somewhat good. I hated how he sticked to destroying Umrao in his last scene (but loved this part of the portrayal of the character).
Divya Dutta really excelled when she greeted Umrao back to Lucknow.
Bua was good enough.
Khulbushan's Maulvi Sahib was really outstanding.
The child actor was excellent.
Ameeran's father was great in his work.
The most fake rendi

The performance of Ash and her beauty is the positive aspect of the movie.Abhishek is good ...but yes choreography wasn't good and so were the sets as I feel they should ve been made jazzy.....Shabana Azmi was excellent .....But yes it's ASH's best movie ...PLs do not compare her with Rekha as they are different and will be......
