Comments for not picking Black
by Sri on Oct 02, 2005 12:38 AM

Yes, i Compleltly agree that Black is a great movie and we should be proud that we have got such a great actors in our country. But one thing you should remember, that Black is a 100% copy from a hollywood movie and we can't send a copy movie to Oscar nominations, but i can't comment on why they picked Peheli for oscar nominations coz i didn't saw that movie.

no hard feelings

Black

I guess u haven't seen the miracle worker a movie made in the 1960's. The first half of Black is a scene to scene copy of this movie with Anne Bancroft. I guess the Oscars wouldn't be too happy to see a plagiarized movie

BLACK should be given to compete for Oscar
by Rahul on Oct 01, 2005 10:38 PM

I have seen the movie BLACK and others.
In my opinion, the movie BLACK should be given an opportunity to compete for Oscar.
It has a marvellous theme, wonderful picturisation, excellent and wise use of technology, perfect acting by the actors, perfect choice of society, places and scenes and its picturisation, and all that it would require to grab a sensible attention from the Western world, especially the judges. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has done an INDEED GREAT AND PERFECT JOB in making the film the way it is.
Hence, BLACK should a perfect choice for a movie towards Oscar competition. And in fact, it can indeed bag a few awards, which is highly probable for the indeed excellent calibre of the movie.

Thank god .... Black is not in !
by Soma on Oct 01, 2005 10:29 PM

Something is wrong with Indian intelligentsia when they give Devdas the status they have given! And now its Black! How many more years are we going to live in the false world of melodrama and artifice!! Until we come out of this exaggeration that wraps our cultural identity, India can only dream of rubbing shoulders with the "realism" in international cinema. I have not seen Paheli, but I trust Amol Palekar's simplicity more than Sanjay Leela Bhansali's forceful filmaking that lacks flow, down to earthness, originality and brilliance of a true artist. I just wish that some day India gets a director who has Satyajit Ray's enigma and perfection blended with modern day's intensity of Ramgopal Verma to create characters for likes of Naseeruddin Shah. I really wonder why the Oscar aspiring directors do not think of Naseer (instead of Amitabh!). The only living actor who can perhaps compare to international histrionic standards is Naseeruddin Shah... and probably down the years it could be Aamir Khan.

Stop being poetic
by Ramiah Ariya on Oct 01, 2005 10:11 PM

People, stop being poetic about any of our movies including Black. Almost all of them are works of dishonesty.
Only in the last few years, I have seen this trend of film critics pretending to be A.O.Scott (New York Times). They use the same words Americans use to describe good Hollywood movies, such as "brilliant" and "sublime" without really thinking if the subject matter qualifies. Film critics in India, like everyone else in the Indian media seem to take themselves too seriously; perhaps this is the result of globalisation.
Black, like every movie out of "Bollywood" was created so that Bhansali could capture the attention of International audience; or as Subash Ghai put it, "White people". Its colonial homes and characters named Mrs.McNally are created so that NRIs can rejoice in their own "sensitivity". These movies also satisfy the group that demands that Indian movies show a "better" side of India to foreigners. So much so that most Hindi movies are now created to satisfy the imaginary "cross-over" audience. None of them show a real person on the street.
Creators need to be honest first;Black has some of the corniest dialogs in English.
Grow up, film critics..

why black and not pahali
by sandya n raj on Oct 01, 2005 03:14 PM

The jury was wrong in selecting pahalei and how can one forget that heart rendering performaencec frob all the characters. Thanks bhansali for giving us such a down toearth movie. Whether it goes to oscar your film is the best. Our jury is influenced by external influence.
well wisher
