Hello, I'm extremely sorry to say this, but the comment on paheli about dances and dancers and loud colours, I think are invalid. I beleive that's Indian cinema. Coming to Black, I am an ardent fan of Amitab Bachhan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali is my favourite director, but Black I felt was a movie that should not have been made by Mr. Bhansali. The reason being that it is a copy of an Oscar Winning movie called Miracle Worker.
Make that 12x2. I wholeheartedly agree with you. Paheli is a good film, but Oscar has a different direction, and India will only put itself to one more round of return.
Hopefully, like Michelle, with every fall, the jury will rise to do better the next time. - Amen.
Black is copy of one english movie he Miracle Worker (1962) based on helen keller directed by aurther penn. First part of movie --- xerox copy --so why---
Directed by Arthur Penn.
CAST:
Anne Bancroft .... Annie Sullivan. Patty Duke .... Helen Keller. Victor Jory .... Captain Keller. Inga Swenson .... Kate Keller. Andrew Prine .... James Keller. Kathleen Comegys .... Aunt Ev.
BLACK could never go to the Oscars and survive. There are two basic and inherent reasons why I say this.
First, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences:
Rule Fourteen - Special Rules for the Best Foreign Language Film Award
I. DEFINITION
A foreign language film is defined, for Academy Award purposes, as a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track.
BLACK does not have a predominantly non-English dialogue track.
Second, it is a remake of an American film, THE MIRACLE WORKER, with so much pulled from that film that even Michelle's first word, like Helen Keller's was "water". Imagine that! An entrant country sending a copy of one of the host country's classic films!
There is no denying that the bombastic and emotional BLACK was a giant step forward for Hindi cinema, but the fact still remains that the selection committee was oh, so correct in NOT chosing BLACK to represent India at the Oscars.
How embarrassing would it be for India to have the film sent home because it failed to meet even the definition of what is accepted for submission?
Why cant people accept that we have to send a original movie for any award outside India. Paheli was Indian story with Indian back drop. We all know Black was a copy of English movie. The actors, director and all the think tank should have thought this aspect as well before putting their efforts. Stop this stupidity of why paheli, why not black. Raj
Just see "The Miracle Worker", best movie at oscars 1962. Black's First half is scene to scene copy of that movie. I am not saying Black is bad, but compared to Miracle worker it pales. That point makes it a less worthy contender itself. I am also Black movie's fan but not for Oscars.

I m sorry my friend, don't take it personally...but I think its you who's dumb & not the rediff people. These websites like rediff are place to put people's opinion. If they start publishing thier own personal choices, then it won't be fair. CHeck out before you speak anything.... I am not promoting rediff.com..but I like to correct those who think they are so called "cool", "I know what I'm talking about", etc. I hope you got my point dude. My suggestion to you--> Read newspapers more often..go online & read some knoledgable stuff. Good lUck!
Two days back I read an article in Rediff supports Paheli was the right choice when compared to Black, and now I see an article supporting Black from the same people. Yor writers itself are so divergent about the same kinda topics, how do u expect others to be accepting the correct decision. First you people from Rediff decide if you are against Paheli or Black and then write articles.Dumb fellows. --- Naveen
