naina review
by shivkumar on May 22, 2005 11:51 PM

Well, I was one of the unfortunate few who happened to watch NAINA in the first day of its release. How much ever tolerant iam towards the average Indian film makers' mistakes and bloopers, NAINA comes as a big challenge to my levels of tolerance. Well, Iam not a great fan of hollywood horror movies myself - and yes I did admire movies like BHOOT where Urmila made you skip a heart beat or two with her spell binding performance. But - NAINA - iam sorry - is a desperate attempt to scare the indian audience ignoring the fact that the bars of indian cinema standards have been time and again been raised. May be NAINA would have been a real thriller in the mid nineties, but now - iam sorry, it leaves you bored and tired at the end of it. I should admit that it does have some stunning visuals - but too much of gore and blood and burnt corpses and biopsy tables leave you with a pukish feeling. the tube rail blast and few other such scenes are well conceived ideas but badly executed - may be due to budget constraints, but all the same, i recall an early 90's rap number "ICE ICE BABY" which say...." anything less than the best is a felony !!!"

Cannot agree with you
by common man on May 22, 2005 11:09 AM

Dear Sir,

I cannot agree with you regarding your view that a proper ending is not required. I havent seen the movie 'NAINA' yet. But it doesnt make sense that since a movie is having a proper ending, it can't be included in a good movie list. The movie 'KAAL' was very dissappointing to me.It doesnt give a solution to a mystery, which is unacceptable from a common man point of view. The Indian movies are living in a realistic world unlike the Hollywood or your southeast movies. We are not ready to believe and we are not fools to believe that supernatural things exist. If there is a mystery, it will have a solution and we want that solution.
Sir, you please come down to the realistic world and review things.

Naina

This is for the Common Man, who posted his message on Naina. May be you should wake up and realise that when Black made an impact, it was not just because of Bhansali's direction, Rani's and Bachchan's amazing acting skills, Ayesha's stunning debut and that brilliant photography. it was also because it conformed to world standards technically and otherwise. A remake is fine and Indian cinema has a lot of potential, but every remake doesnt have to earn laurels when all it does is copies the original and replaces the element of horror(in case of Naina) with gore and blood. This film was meant to horrify, not make you nauseous. World cinema, whether Thai, Chinese, Korean , Japanese or otherwise. Dark Water, for instance, looks very understated, but its that same understated quality that horrifies you when the psychologicak impact is made. We dont always need apparitions and blood to scare us, that is the Ramsay's forte. Give credit where it is due. The question is not one of putting down Indian and glorifying all that is not. the issue is, lets get realistic. If you ever bother to study world cinema, and happen to see Touch of Evil or Hitchcocks' films, u will see what i mean.

Bore..agree with the reviewer
by Ashish Rastogi on May 22, 2005 01:14 AM

If you watch the last month "Rooh" serial on ZeeTV, or you like to watch horror movies then there is no need of wasting money on this. Because the story is 95% same and there is nothing new in this.

Some critic writer which called for special screening of film mentioned in the review that movie is Spine-chilling, but in reality movie is spine-paining, and have lots of flaws like the last wish of eye donor is mother called him once or say please dont die when she committed suicide but when mother was badly drunked then how is it possible.

Visual effects by Biju.D (Maya Entertainment Ltd.) is really very down market, and in the first shot, the particles going in the child urmila eyes not looks like a mirror. But urmila mentioned in the TV interview that due to glass particles I lost the eyes in the movie "Naina".

After Kaal another rubbish horror(comedy) movie. NOT RECOMMENDED.

This trend is bad
by BBN on May 21, 2005 07:09 PM

I have noticed that this trend of trashing every movie by alluding that it is a copy of this and that movie has caught on all reviewers like a virus. It is possible that they have seen all those movies and hence are unable to appreciate the new movie as it is. Hence their opinions will be biased because they are based on comparison with the so called original movie they saw earlier.
What they should note is that the common movie going public like have not seen all those movies (definitely none of the exotic ones mentioned in this review) and hence dont compare with them.
What we want in a review is an honest review of the movie as it is and not a comparison with others.
Finally i feel that considering the total number of movies made in the world per year, and that there are only N number of stories and scenes, repetition is inevitable. So if you take nobody can be said to have original thoughts because the letters ABCDEF.. have already been written earler!
This is nonsense.
Hope this lets someone think...... NOT ORIGINALLY!
