A Big big dissappointment
by Udit Mitra on Aug 16, 2005 05:34 PM

Guess...guys who are reviewing the movies for you are not professional enough to handle the job or are simply biased. Mangal Pandey is a very big dissapointment....its not a period movie...its just another hindi movie, with an item number in the climax. The story was a one liner..which every one knew before reaching the theater...depiction was very important. Ketan Mehta...just cudn't do it. Amir was okay...but he has done better movies before. The Rising proves how not to make a good movie..but to package and market it. But it has failed....miserably.

Rediff, hope to have better reviews from u guys in future, to prevent spoiling Friday evenings.

Cheers

Udit

Alok
nice movie indeed
by Alok on Aug 16, 2005 04:18 PM

I agree the movie is watchable atleast 2 times, that's what I'm
going to do.let others decide for the box office results, for me
the movie is one of the best movies seen after a long
time.the only drawback was the item number in between,as
thats the ony thing irrelevant to the main narrative.Otherwise
the Elephant rider Bhats were adding a sort of Sutradhaaar
role in the movie,as bhats were the only people who spread
the story of Mangal Pandey & turned him into a Mythical
Hero.OM PURI as usual is best in his what I say BHARAT
EK KHOJ STYLE.Though there are a lots of things to say but
if you are reading what I am saying, better go & watch the
movie buddies...IT'S WORTH WATCHING....

pathetic pandey
by Rituparna GHosh on Aug 16, 2005 03:46 PM

the movie brings a shame to patriotism, the story is arbit, a larger than life picture is given to a small story there by removing the authenticity of it.
Expected far better from amir

Quilt of patchwork
by mahesh on Aug 16, 2005 12:55 PM

Quilt of patch work made from old used clothes gives very bright flamboyant work of art and also gives warmth to tuck onself in but this Mehta film is indeed patchwork but not well knit one

sagar
waste of a good actor
by sagar on Aug 16, 2005 12:09 PM

Such a bad movie.Don't watch this movie in theatres, wait for Diwali it will be screened somewhere on TV, surely. i dont know what is the intension of Ketan Mehta behind making this film, it is a waste of a good subject and a brilliant actor also. What is the intension of putting Amisha Patel in Englishmen's life, where she is having only 5 or 6 dialouges in whole film. There is a big mess for songs too. I can't believe that A.R.Rahman is the music director of this film.As far as Aamir is concern, he is the best. But as far as direction and screenplay is concern it is so bad, there is no link of the story.I dont think that there was any need for Rani Mukherjee and Amisha Patel. If ketan mehta concentrated on only Mangal Pandey's life, then it can be a better movie, great movie.

Shadab
Aamir is excellent
by Shadab on Aug 16, 2005 01:23 AM

Aamir Khan absolutely did justice to his role, the long hair, the tikka, the moustache - all blended very well with the character and Aamir carried it superbly. Toby Stephens is great too, quite commendable is the fact that he mastered Hindi very well. But there were some elements about the film that are a little hard to overlook - the biggest one - an item number with two lesbian like women? I mean its the 1800s, it really spoiled the mood of the film. Although Rani Mukherkjee did the mujra song just like any genuine courtesan would, both hers and Amisha's roles were not really required, what happens to them in the end-there is no closure. Both Aamir's and Toby's characters could have been built more strongly if these unnecessary elements were cut out. Plus the movie did not give any background on the other people who were involved in the uprising, in all fairness Mangal Pandey may have sparked the revolution but he certainly did not lay down all the ground work - that credit goes to Tatya Tope and Azimullah. Its a movie but its based on history and it could have come out more realistic if the director tried to stick to the facts as much as possible. BUT WATCH IT FOR AAMIR!!

Mangal Pandey Review
by Rajesh on Aug 15, 2005 09:22 PM

Mangal Pandey - The Rising is miles from classic Lagaan.
I would not recommend this movie even for first viewing.

Its a shame for Aamir to give us such a pathetic movie after 4 years.

Excellent Movie!!!
by Vineet on Aug 15, 2005 09:06 PM

Watching AAmir Khan is a treat and the movie is Superb!!!

Pls donot miss the scene where British officers ask Amir to ask for mercy and plead sorry.

Watch AAmir\'s expression ,his hands caressing his long grown moustache and his Body Language.

Nothing to wonder, we have just one \"actor\" left in this star studded industry and that is AAmir Khan.

Mangal Pandey brings reminiscenes of 1857 and one can\'t ask for more...

Outstanding in every aspect.
