Ulhas Shirke
Mangal sidelines important characters
by Ulhas Shirke on Aug 25, 2005 06:36 PM

When an actor like Aamir Khan makes an appearance on screen after 4 years and that too in the much talked about Big budget film made by Ketan Mehta; the expectations are very high. Luckily for Mangal Pandey The Rising, the time was right. People had just recovered from the wet spells with the sun coming out to welcome the film. Moreover with Independence day holiday following the Sunday, added to its advantage. So, the theatre capacity was full for the first four days. But, are the audience satisfied ? Theek hai, Aamir is fine, thats the reaction. But, no one says that it is a wonderful or finest film. There could be two reasons behind this, either the people want more of action and dialogues or they need good music to support such a history based film. And, Mangal Pandey fails to deliver both. The only plus point being that the film maker has remained sincere to his script.

Mangal Pandey being the film for Aamir, it is obvious that the actor has plenty of scope in the film. But, there are no strong characters with whom he confronts. More so, the co-artistes are not impressive, except for Mukesh Tiwari and Toby Stephens. Perhaps, it is so because their roles have limited scope. Even the female characters like Rani Mukherkee and Ameesha Patel are just for name sake. Rani at least has one scene to impress but Ameesha is just like any other supporting artiste. Varsha Usgaonkar as Jhansi Ki rani has just a fancy Dress show type of entry. And, that too the scene looks like having been lifted from her serial. The same is the case with the character of Bahadur Shah Jafer . In reality, the 1857 battle is incomplete without these two characters. But, the director seemed more keen on projecting the single character of Mangal. When Richard Attenburrough made a film on Gandhi , he very well kept in mind the other important relevant characters during his time and thats how the film was appreciated by all.

Mangal Pandey

As a movie MANGAL PANDEY is excilent. As the actual mangal pandey character is not 100% clear, so director mixed his own idea in his creation and controversy arises here. If we watch mangal pandey as a movie it is nothin but excilent where all have done significantly well in his/her role. But if we try to relate it with Hystory I have to say there is confusion in the story.
But overall , Amir as Mangal Pandey is best.

Excellent

An excellent movie.

Ketan and his team handled periodic movie excellent.A slice of history that explores the mutiny of 1857, MANGAL PANDEY balances form and content beautifully. Lavishly mounted and recreating the era with precision, MANGAL PANDEY suits the term 'landmark cinema' and has all it takes to help Bollywood take a giant step into world cinema with pride.

The splendid performances by Aamir and Toby Stephen art the maor attraction of the movie.

A R Rahman and Javed Akthar both done a good job.

In all it is the excellent movie to watch.

Toby Stephens

hey guys! why none of u r discussing about the terrific perfomance by Toby Stephens? if one dares to call this movie worth watching then its should only for Toby. He steals every scene he is involeved in. what do you say? and for aamir's role dont u think an actor like ajay devgan was an apt choice?
