Mangal Pandey......a gripper or bust
by Ashok on Aug 15, 2005 05:47 PM

Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Sarfarosh....they are the movies which had reinforced Aamir as not one of the best, but the best actor of Bollywood....at least from my point of view.

Alas, Mangal Pandey is JUST not in the same league. There was something grossly missing in the movie....I was not able to put myself in the boots of the main character....in a way, I was never once enacting any role....time and again I found myself moving away and thinking of my office, my work...etc etc, well, this should never happen if I am to watch a gripping theme.

There was a lot wrong in the editing, acting, the flow of the story and definitely the music. After having watched Lagaan this was a shocker. Even in Lagaan the end was pretty obvious, as was here, but the way the subject was tackled in Lagaan indeed made it a worthwhile nominee for the Oscars.

I think, only the hype would carry this film through in the initial phases and one could be sure to witness empty seats when the initial rush is weeded out.

It is a 'thumbs down' from this 'first day first show' viewer of Aamir Khan movies.

The Rising falls before you can utter the second word!
by Adhitya on Aug 15, 2005 12:07 PM

Simply unwanted fare! With songs plopped around like ketchup and unwanted scenes littered around like a pizza, this movie is a pathetic mix of a dead documentary with a commercial twang.

Oodles of cleavage and loitering emotions destroy whatever feelings that were supposed to be awakened in the viewer. Lindsay Pereira's review is good, but that will not save the movie from 'falling'.

The rising: And the standards of movie making falling.
by Ritesh on Aug 15, 2005 11:06 AM

Go watch this movie and feel disappointed just the way I felt. I placed high expectations -quite natural- on Amir for his choice of roles and more importantly, the scripts he selects. I waited for almost a year for its release. However, the movie did not match to my expectations. I thought this movie will be in par with Legend of Bhagat Singh alas, it doesn't. What you get in the movie is a very strange friendship between an Indian British-Sipoy and his senior, steamy [read sex] scenes, item numbers, and in the middle goes the narration of history, and when it does it does it only gives you nonsense. After reading this if you still want to go and watch the movie then make sure you do not take your family along -just trying to save you from embarrassment.

The Rising

Only complain I had with the movie is that I didnt feel the patriotism rising in me. USually with such movies, songs or dialouges make you sit up and feel patriotic. You want to go and defend your country just by watching our soldiers putting their lives on line. The rest of movie is spell binding. One is not bored anywhere. They did a great job. Actingwise- Toby Stephens impressed me most. Aamir was ok. I didn't think his acting was memorable. Rani was good in her moments. Amisha had nothing much to do except look scared.
I did learn about how Company operated which I didnt know before. So all in all a good movie.

It not worth it
by Sandeep on Aug 14, 2005 10:16 PM

The Rising sucks, Even though good performances by lead character, it lacks the stroryline and the grip ont he subject and keep diverting from mainstream.

Its not at all worth watching in theatare.

mangal panday
by vinay on Aug 14, 2005 05:34 PM

good attempt by the director....but, few flaws stand out, mangal panday shown as staunch brahmin but, who joins his senior officer in disrupting "the sati" ceremony.......and who's discriminates and insults a poor untouchable repeatedly.

rani and ameesha couldnt do anything and had nothing to do with the flow of the story.......mangal mangal song is repeated many times in the movie and each time it's burden on the ears, too many songs and they're jarring and are bumps to the narrative..........both toby and aamir are equally good, in fact it's toby who with his misty eyes in the end stays with you and his dailogues stays with you there afer.

great aamir
by sadim on Aug 14, 2005 02:33 PM

what a great actor is amir realy i realized that no any actor in bollywood like a aamir, he did a greate role in RISING , YES it is watchable movie, worth watching for aamir acting. AMIR is the only actor who played a diffrent role and succeed and hit the movie. so he is greate not like other khan, other khan try to make a different movie but they never gave any hit movie in different role, they have only good director support, but AAmir no need to say that he does\\\'t have brand director. people see only aamir no need to know who is director and producer, so AAMIR is greate actor, he did very well in rising really it is worth watching only for aamir.
