A Sure Disaster
by Malick M.Irfan on Aug 11, 2005 10:20 AM

Hello All,

I Great fan of epic movies i do not think so that Mangal Pandey will leave any impact.Only MOOCH and long hair are not what make a movie successfull and legand but it is Direction,Story and many other think. If big names were surity for success than ALEXANDER would be a grand success.

I am sure that this movie is going to end the carrier of Aamir Khan and the Director and will harm Great A.R.Rahman.

Regards,

Malick M.Irfan

Mangal Pandey-Wont be a Pheonix

I think the movie would be a let down. Amir would excel in overacting for the second time, earlier in Raja Hindustani and he might get a filmfare award for acting overly in this movie. A R Rahman has lost the MIDAS touch and would continue to do so until reincarnated. No comments on Amisha and Rani.

prediction :semi hit
by cyril on Aug 11, 2005 09:43 AM

since mangal pandey is a historical it will definetly do well at the metros but in smaller centers it may not live upto expectations because the audience there do not entertain different kind of films and are stuck up in the formula films like sex based comedies and candy floss romances. so mangal pandey will find it's audience in the metros and mostly in the overseas.one thing is inevitable for this film and that is high critical acclaim.

Overload Publicity
by Aruni Mukherjee on Aug 11, 2005 09:15 AM

The anticipation regarding this film is immense. Too immense, I might add. There is a danger that the film might not match up to the hype bubble that has been created around it. It might suffer the same fate as Kisna. Of course, with the added weight of Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherji, this film might go further than Subhash Ghai's period film, and it will certainly be appreciated in countries other than India. Rahman's music, unlike his most attempts, is not tremendously catchy or inspiring.

Did Rehman let down
by Hasnain Bokhari on Aug 11, 2005 03:46 AM

Enough has been written about Rehman's score on Mangal Pandey (MP) and few of the critics went to the extent of writing him off. I am of the opinion that when you ask Rehman to compose, expectations are sky high from the maestro but imagine the rigorous work Rehman has to go through.

Had it been someone else composing MP, I am at least 80% sure that more than half the press would have given thumbs up that music suits well to the period of 1875 and it could not have been better. But keeping Rehman's past in mind and his dealing with period films, I think the outcome of Mangal Pandey is the collective efforts of Rehman, director Ketan Mehta and worth mentioning Amir Khan, who almost served as casting director in this film.

Three of them have good understanding about the music but on the personal end I didn't like the music, partly because of the high expectations of MP being Amir's first film after 4 years and partly Rehman was giving a score. Having said that, we have seen repeatedly in Bollywood that it is but not the music which sells, it has always been the story.

I am pretty sure that director of Ketan Mehta's calibre would have to say a lot in the given two hours time.

Will Mangal Pandey be a hit

In India hit and flop status is determined by the distributor price. Without knowing what price it is sold for - it is difficult to predict. Also, without seeing the film it is difficult to predict - but I have to guess I believe it should able to fetch Rs. 30-35 cr

Regarding Rahman's music, just because Rediff reviewer thinks that The Rising music is a let-down does not mean many people think that way. Most Indian music lovers know that Rahman's music requires time to grow on you. People who think "Dus Bahane" and "Just chill" are the best songs ever composed will surely think that The Rising music is a let-down. The Rising is a period film and one should not expect Dus or MPKK style music.
