o.k. film
by RAJAT on Jun 21, 2004 07:04 PM

i think hritik really pulls off a great performance but the real weakness in the film is the script and the character of preiety zinta, i would rate it 2.8 out of 5.0.
The stunts and direction is well done aswell.

Lakshya- A must watch
by Sanjeev Das on Jun 21, 2004 05:43 PM

Giving an opinion about a movie is easy. But, writing a review, as I understand now, is a much more difficult proposition, because, here, you are staking a bet on the quality of your choice, by writing a review in a public forum. Hence, you can gauge and expect what kind of movie Lakshya must be, to inspire me to shirk all my inhibitions and write my first movie review.

The only thing that I'd tell a person who hasn't watched Lakshya is "You're losing something". Lakshya can be watched for many reasons: the brilliant and mature direction of Farhan Akhtar, the best performance of Hrithik Roshan so far, the meticulous and absorbing cinematography of Christopher Popp, the realistic and brilliant performances by a spectrum of actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Om Puri, Boman Irani, Sushant Singh, etc. to the minor roles of soldiers and Hrithik's friends, who have performed with aplomb.

But, the biggest and most important reason for recommending Lakshya is that Lakshya speaks about life. It tells us about two of the most important aspects of life- Success and Failure. Lakshya is an excellent endeavor to demarcate the threshhold between the two. It rightly show the reactions of people around you, when you win, and when you lose. And it also rightly shows that the failure doesn't hurt as much as the change of behaviour of people around you, when you are a failure. Lakshya tells us the importance of a success and inspires the viewer to achieve his/her ambitions.

Lakshya is the story of a young man, Karan Shergill (Hrithik Roshan), who doesn't have a direction in life. Karan is carefree and takes his life as much coolly. He gets inspired by everyone around him and is totally confused about what he wants to do in his life. Karan, the cool dude, is extremely loveble. Everyone who watches the movie would like to have a friend as cool as him, but, at the same time, he himself would never wish to be like Karan. Seeing all his friends deciding about their careers, Karan gets even more confused, and makes a rash decision to join the Indian Army. His idea is supported by childhood sweetheart Romi (Preity Zinta), but his parents oppose his decision. This opposition make him more wilful about his decision, which ultimately leads to his joining of Indian Military Academy (IMA).

But, life's not that easy. Karan fails to endure the hardships of the training and runs away from there. Learning about this, Romi breaks up with him, calling him a loser and his parents' behaviour stresses that he is good for nothing. Here, Karan learns what it is to be a failure. He decides that he has to succeed at all costs. He rejoins IMA, and his will power helps him become Lt. Karan Shergill.

The movie then takes a turn, when Karan is posted to Kargil and the Kargil war starts. Karan's regiment is led by Col. Sunil Damle(Amitabh Bachchan) and they have been entrusted with the responsibility of capturing Point 5179. As the war campaign to capture the peak goes on, Karan's only ambition becomes the capture of the peak and putting up the tricolour there.

How Karan reaches his lakshya forms the remaining part of the movie. The climax has been well shot and pumps up the adrenaline levels of the viewer due to the emotional attachment with the Indian victory.

Technically, the film is first-rate. Farhan Akhtar proves, yet again after Dil Chahta Hai, that he is an expert at handling human emotions. With Lakshya, Farhan has entered the leafue of Bollywood's great directors. Cinematography by Christopher Popp, a German, is one of the brilliant features of Lakshya. Some scenes like the one where in Karan and his team climb the cliff have never been seen in Indian cinema.

There's a lot to speak about the performances too. Farhan extracts Hrithik's best performance ever by making the best use of his limited facial expressions and shrill voice. Amitabh Bachchan' performance, as usual is eye-catching. Preity Zinta is superb as a news correspondent Romila Dutta, a girl who is in absolute control of her life. Rest of the performances are also good, especially, Sushant Singh, Boman Irani, and Om Puri's performances are worth mentioning.

Lakshya is good because it is a well-made movie and keeps the viewer engrossed in the happenings. But, Lakshya is great because it is realistic and shows life in the real sense. As is real life, Lakshya doesn't have any positive or negative characters. People just behave in a way that gives them more advantage. In a way, Lakshya is a very good case study for the MBAs to learn about the reality of life.

Finally, I'd like to end where I started. Just watch Lakshya and that too in a theatre, because watching it on a PC or TV would be an insult to the movie.

by Imran on Jun 21, 2004 03:49 PM

The movie is really cool, already saw teo times and planning to see the third time soon..........
Farhan has proved everyone who felt he was a one film wonder.......Two films which are as different as different can be.......Two different genre of movies at such young age......MINDBLOWING man......Your plus point lies in your perfection......To do all the scenes as naturally as possible......Which are evident in the scenes between Hrithik and Boman and also with Priety.........All the actors have done justice to their roles.......But the film belongs to Hrithik......In one word A-W-E-S-O-M-E........
And I am waiting for your next Farhan...Some guys are already comparing u to the finest directors of the world......Rightly so because at your age I don't think they could have made such a film.........
Hats Off to the whole crew,be it the cinematography or the sync sound recording.......Last but not the least Prabhu Deva is going to get the best Choreographer award for this year........
What a dance....Hrithik ur the coolest dancer man....
The Big B as always is at his best......
Once again thank you Farhan for such a good film.....

For India? Is that white man's award so important to us that Aktar - if he sends his movie to the Oscars (which I don't think we should even bother doing) - is going to bring an award home not for himself, not for his team, but for the NATION? Does the sacred land of Bharat Varsh today have so little pride that our nation itself is pining for that dumb statue?

hrithik is the best...
by anjali on Jun 20, 2004 02:13 PM

Lakshya is such a refreshing movie which stands apart from the rest of the types...and farhan akhtar is turning out to be a director to reckon with..hats off to you farhan for churning something different from the same usual lovey dovey stuff that the chopras and johars bring out..in a scenic switzserland and such stuff rarely makes an impact on the audience apart from selling dreams and making the youth depressed....i guess farhans classic is an inspiration to all the young and patriotic indians...
Hrithik has arrived...hope shahrukh doesn,t resort to his cheap tactics now and try and bring him down...
