Who is this critic
by Ruchika on Jun 14, 2004 11:01 AM

I just want to know Mr. critic's credentials or may be a list of his favorite movies. Only then I will be able to understand if his is a genuine problem. DEV is a fantastic movie, a real movie for a change. It hits u in your face and makes u realise that its not a dream world. Kudos to the director for coming up with such a brilliant movie. Cast is amazing. Special mention for Mr. Bachchan. HE IS A LEGEND. HE IS AN INSTITUTION in himself and rest are mere bachas.

Dev
by Commando on Jun 14, 2004 10:26 AM

I watched "Dev" today. I must say, I really liked it. I will admit, I did feel that certain parts dragged a bit. Nihalani claimed to be making a more "commercial" film here, and parts did feel a tad "not-so-commercial". A little exciting background music here and there, some slightly more fast-paced editing, and maybe the omission of a few scenes (though U can't really pick any out), may have brought "Dev" to an even higher level. That said, "Dev" is definitely amongst the great cop films out there. In fact, it is more than just a "cop film"; it is a powerful, socially-driven drama. Amitabh Bachchan and Om Puri steal the show, but Kareena and Fardeen leave their marks as well. Though dealing with a very "played-out" issue (5 out of every 7 films made today seem to be about cops and/or politicians), the dialogues and scenes presented in "Dev" manage to feel fresh and captivating throughout. I'd give the film at least an 8 out of 10 rating. "Khakee" is hands-down, more entertaining, but, other than their theme, they share little semblance. Bachchan fits the "realistic" genre just as well as he does the "action-packed, masala" films he has come to be known for excelling in. GO "DEV"!

Streretyping the majority community

Did anyone notice? There's only a couple of bad Muslims - the explosion they cause at the temple is covered very briefly, quickly.
However, most Hindus are bad, evil rapists. Notice how detailed the coverage of the havoc caused by Hindus on Muslims is.

This is SO typical and stinks of the Congress policy of minority appeasement - what does the director plan to do next, stand for the position of MLA?????

Director Nihalani is a commie. You know how the commies are. Bollywood itself is teeming with rootless "Secularists." That's why they keep churning out Westernized movies that have absolutely no relationship to Indians. Ever wonder why Bollywood films aren't even Indian? Ever wonder why they keep making movies with Christian weddings and with characters with Western names? Ever wonder why there are so many Muslims in Bollywood? (Please, don't say anything about talent. NO ONE in Bollwood, whether he be Hindu or Muslim or Ancient Egyptian, is there because of talent.)

Confused???
by Sumit Kalra on Jun 14, 2004 10:13 AM

I don't know your credentials Mr. Vivek but you have confused everyone with your critical view of DEV. You yourself is confused if the movie is worth to see. I think this is because of over expectation that usually happen with movies like DEV. If we go without these expectation we will come much happier then you come... believe me!

insensitive review
by Sunil Gautam on Jun 14, 2004 07:02 AM

I'll resist the urge to lamabast this critic though I must say he has been quite insensitive to the film maker. First we complain that no one realy brings out any controversial issues out in their films. When someone does, we complain that there is nothing new in it. Govind Nihalani deserves kudos for giving us such a sincere film. Dev doesn't have one weak moment. If Vivek Fernandes has the time to comment on Kareena's singing (not a word on Ehsaan's performance) he should stick to reviewing David Dhawan films.

Surprisingly!
by Ajay on Jun 14, 2004 01:25 AM  | Hide replies

What I have noticed in last few weeks is there is more stress on attacking rediff reviewer than actually attacking particular movie. As far as Dev is concerned, movie is a sensible attempt by Nihalani to show realistic picture of communal violance and its effects on ordinary people. Its much better than Mai Hu Na, Yuva and few more recently released films. I still didn't inderstand need for putting songs. Fardeen and Kareena had no option but to act well as this is Govind Nihalani's film. As far as Bacchan is concerned I am shocked to notice even Nihalani could not ask this guy to deliver some realistic acting performance. Same old style, dilague delivery, pauses..I am sick of Bacchan. All in all movie is much better than rest of the movies currently playing but definitely not the best of Nihalanis..

The Reviewer is a little hatke

The movie though slow on developing its plot is a perfect one.According to me the director has done a excellent job in perfectly showing what he had wanted to.The Big B needs no further mention....he did what he does best, and id seems he is perfecting his art with growing age...well supported by Om Puri, Fardeen and Ritu Agnihotri.

You say that Amitabh repeats the dialogue delivery, expressing anguish and is not realistic.I want to ask you how many different poses have you adopted when you are in a bad mood or want to cry?

is it unrealistic to express you anguish in a particular manner? After all that's his personal style, not copied from anyone and the same style has kept him afloat in this flip-flop industry for so long.
Amitabh deserves better crticism..
