Excellent movie

I strongly disagree with the reviewer. Its an excellent movie and worth watching. All the actors played their part very well. Even i like the "open ending " as its based on an actual incident and its the best way to end a movie based on such a sensitive topic.

what was the first scene all about?
by rohit on Jun 21, 2004 02:05 AM

Hey guys,

It's heartening to see so many people have appreciated this movie. I was discouraged by the negative reviews it had received, but still decided to watch this movie, and it was well worth the time!

I couldn't understand the significance of the opening scene though. The scene in the college corridor where Dev shoots the youth protestant when he abuses the police force. Could anyone throw some light on this scene and how it was related to the story?

Thanks

Can we have more movies like this??
by Rajat on Jun 20, 2004 12:01 PM

I think Dev is the most remarkable Hindi movie I've seen in a while (haven't been a lot into movies, though). Some things I liked about the movie:

1) AB - Yet another wonderful role!
2) Realistic - Doesn't leave you wondering "How the hell did that happen???"
3) The movie didn't have the stereotype climax (let's say if Fardeen Khan overturned the ruling govt or something).
4) Nice depiction of what might have happened in Gujarat.
5) Short duration (God! How many movies, I just pray for them to get over, but they go on & on & on.)
6) Elegant and sophisticated verbage - No "Khoon pee jaaonga", etc.
7) Not many songs

Well, I can see the reviewer has a different opinion. Maybe, this is not the kind of movie junta likes and that's why, we don't see many such movies. Anyways, I liked it.

Truth which hurts the old cultivated egoes.
by Rajesh Kr.Sharma on Jun 19, 2004 04:31 PM

The film brings out the sensitive issue of religion with a perfection. I can not think of a better star cast, a better story line and a better end than this of the film, here is why ?
The film basically reflects 3 very genuine characters with 3 different perceptions:-

Dev (Amitabh):- A man who believes that if you follow the constitution,u follow your religion.
The performance of the actor is awesome, and cant explained but only be watched times and again.

Fardeen:- well protrays a young with confused mentality, who's religion is being converted in his ego, by the opportunism of politics, but he basically is a human and an Indian who at last kills his ego and follows what actually his heart is.

Tejinder (om Puri) - and last but not least, the brilliant performance of om puri in his display of a fanatic, he so marvellously displays that whatever close relation it may be but it is the religion, and ideology which comes above all. He displays that he doesnt care that whatever you percieve, but will follow what I want.

These three mindset are very much existent in India, the very region of communal violence. The need is to only have one mindset that of DEV all over India.

Dev is amazing !!
by Navin on Jun 19, 2004 12:34 PM

I am not agree with the review. If you see this movie from commercial point of then it is a dissapointment. The movie is well written and directed. Each and every seen reflects the director involvement in the project. Like he showed Dev as a typical Hindu as he regularly do "Pooja" at his home. The scenes between Amitabh and Om Puri were amazing. It looked real. No drama. The problem with us is that we can digest "Murder" but reject "Pinjar" or "Baghban" and called them a drama. I am highly dissappointed with the awards distributed last year. Not a single award goes to "Baghban" bcoz it was a drama.
"Dev" is not a hero, he is a character. You need this character to make India "Hamara Bharat Mahan". This message is very well conveyed by Govind Nihlani. Like one of his message appealed me "Humein sirf sochana hi nahi kuch karana bhi chahiye". I highly appreciate the movie and of course Big B' performace.

DEV review
by manish verma on Jun 18, 2004 02:11 PM

I really liked this movie. It's not like a typical masaala movie. The director has been successful in depicting the present system of communilism. The insecurity of minorties and the frustration of majorities against each other and which is capitalised by current poltician for their own benefits. This also gives an insight about how poltical system is diffrerent from the way a normal person think. Also it's interesting see how the matured an experienced politician takes some extreme step(allowing the Majority community to continue with the riot by restraining the police). Here in this particular sequence he is just trying to cool down the sentiments of the majority community by allowing them to express themselves. The best part is the way Amrish puri is justifies in taking his action.Which looks logically correct for a moment. This also shows why a political system is kept over the Police and other administration system.
This movie was like an eye opener for me about the political system with respect to the reason they take as the justification for their actions.
I have tried my best to give my view as a neutral umpire.
Thanks & regards
Manish

DEV in gujarat!
by vinay on Jun 18, 2004 11:51 AM

I saw the movie DEV yesterday. It's had a strong impact on me n my friends. We've been discussing it continuously. The performances r awesome. But the climax was a bit confusing. But the film shows that if the govt is serious ,then riot situations can b cntrlld. If Gujarat would have had a DEV the scenario wud hav been better. There was a famous muslim cop in Gujarat, under whose area nothing happnd, who was like DEV.But he got transferred n then suspended by the infamous u-know-who leader.Hats off 2 Govind Nihalani.

The truth about Dev
by Vikil on Jun 18, 2004 05:26 AM

After having viewed Dev, I have to say ... that critics who are bashing the movie by claiming it's "too realistic" or formulaic need to realize that these kind of movies are exactly what people need in order to realize the truth about society today. There will ALWAYS be a clash between Hindus and Muslims - just as racism is always going to be here in the U.S. and it takes a man of courage and strength to go ahead and make a docu-drama type of a a movie as the one Mr. Nihalani has made. Yes, some films are meant to be escapist, such as Hum Tum, whereas everything is built on a coincidence.. but if a movie seems too fake, the critics have problems. And for a movie like Dev, where the harsh realities and truths of life are presented right in front of our eyes, it flops. Why? We have acting by the perfectionist Mr. Bachchan, who (after the recently made Khakee) proves that cop, villain, father, or basically ANYONE, he will do the job and take in the character's shoes as nobody can ever do. Would anyone have given a 2nd thought to Lagaan had it not been highly promoted or taken to the Oscars? Amir Khan is a fine actor, but by all means, there is NO comparison, esp to Mr. Bachchan.
