Dev is a shame!!
by apoorva on Jun 13, 2004 09:44 PM  | Hide replies

I can not believe that Dev is made by the same person who made movies like Akrosh,Aaghat,Party, Vijeta, Hazar Chaurasi ki Ma, Drohkal and above all Tamas! It seems he had some personal obligations to Big B and that is why those long lectures. And Mr. Bachchhan? What has happenned to you? How could you look so dumb, so boring in this movie? Has anyone noticet his beard which was uneven throughout the movie.. Please Mr. Bachchan, do learn something from actors like Amir Khan. Be selective and show that you are the best. And lastly Fardeen has again proved that even after working in the Factory of Ramu Varma, he could not learn acting...I do agree with Mr. Fernandes and am grateful to make me realize that there are people in India, who can not compromise in writing...wish you all the best Vivek..cheers.

Dev is awesome
by rajesh on Jun 13, 2004 06:15 PM

Can't disagree more with the review. It's a sensible, realistic movie handled so sensitively by Nihalani with awesome performances by everyone, especially Amitabh. I honestly can'y understand how movies like Main Hoon Na can be extolled shamelessly, and an exceptional movie like this one rubbished. I'm sure this reviewer wouldn't have enjoyed another stark, realistic movie, Dhoop, which made no attempt at histrionics, but sought a realistic projection of facts. That, probably, is a crime in today's age of candy-floss movies, where people applaud mindless scenes where Shahrukh flying about in rickshaws, but not a real-life, sensitive movie. Dev is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time (though I'm not sure how'll it'll do in the box office).

Critic's Bias
by jahan on Jun 13, 2004 06:15 PM

When a (highly)dumb,ripped-off, unoriginal, juvenile and innocuous masala film like Koi Mil Gaya comes out you shower it with praise and it instantly becomes a critic's darling, but when a good sensible and far more superior and relevant film like Dev or Yuva comes you take out as many flaws it as possible. It is like looking just at a pimple of a beautiful face. For that matter even if you guys out there check out the rediff reviews of Lagaan and Dil Chahta- movies that revolutionised India Cinema- it sounds as if they are just ordinary, so-so kind of films.Today, Lagaan is regarded by many as a modern commercial classic.I am sure many of the readers out there will share my views. I shall end with a line from your very own review of Dev:whats the fuss all about? get a life, guys.

dev review
by pallavi on Jun 13, 2004 05:54 PM

I saw Dev yesterday and it is a fantastic movie. Mr.Vivek Fernandes just wants candy floss romances, does'nt want to see anything else. Please don't look at the reviews, just go and watch the movie. It's worth it.

Here is a little hatke film ..after watching main hoon i had a mixed feeling whether i was in 2004 OR IN late 80's.This movie is a cutout role for Amitabh..people be careful who wants to write it off..he has lot more to prove..kareena and Fardeen make a cute pair...and yah om puri cannot be forgotten..

Stop talking nonsense
by neeraj on Jun 14, 2004 10:55 AM
this is a reply to ur message.

i dont think AB needs acting lessons from anyone and talking about beards, it was uneven only because once it was black and once it was white. It was black only in the flashback when his son dies.

How can u compare AB with aamir khan. Agreed, aamir khan is a brilliant actor, but if u ask him even he will say its not sensible to compare BIG B with him.

Coming to the movie, i think it was an above average fare with good performances from almost every1. AB was excellent, Om Puri was brilliant as well matching AB with every step. Fardeen shows his growth as an actor. He is competent. Kareena also does her part remarkably well. She is a real revealation after that indifferent performances in Mujhse Dosti Karoge. Amrish Puri, Milind Gunaji and Rati Agnihotri are good in their roles.

All in all a ok movie ."Ek Baar Dekh Sakte hai"

What is wrong with this critic?
by Sandip on Jun 13, 2004 02:34 PM  | Hide replies

'Dev' is the BEST movie Mr. Govind Nihalani has ever made.
It leaves me wondering as to what else does this critic expect. Looking for some black/white riot scenes and some catchy Rehman tunes like the ones in Bombay??

Or maybe Mr. Vivek would have given a better rating to movies 'Main Hoon Na' and 'Tum Hum'(or 'Hum Tum' whatever it is). Request you not to criticize for the sake of criticizing!

In short, Dev is a masterpiece!!!

I didn't want to offend anyone and am not a dumb person to write mail on only the growth of Mr.Bachchan' beard.I want to quote the famous lines of Mr. Adoor Gopalakrishnan about him: Amitabh is the most talented actor in India and is the most misused one. Anyways that was his personal opinion, for me, he is the best. But come on, I can't do flattery. He did not seem convincing in the movie and most resposible for it was Mr. Nihalani's poor handling of the subject. How can an officer straightforwardly give the orders to shoot on a procession? You just see his movie Party in which Naseer appears for a few minutes in the movie and steals the show. And here in Dev, Mr. Bachchan speaks so much that one starts asking whether it's a movie or a lecture class. And as far as comparison is concerned, then do not forget that even Lord Rama asked Lakshman to got to Ravana and learn from him because he was Mahapandit. I meant that Mr. Bachchan should be more selective in joining movies like Aamir, none of his movies have been released after Lagan. As far as acting is concerned, Amitabh is the best actor, or better say an institution, and these are Aamir Khans who should learn from him.

What are ur credentials Mr. fernandes
by Rahul Oberoi on Jun 13, 2004 11:42 AM  | Hide replies

Yes, Mr. reviewer, can we know your credentials as a movied critic please ? Bet you have grown up on an overdose of candy floss romances or been wasting your time running after some blondes discussing how cute Bradd Pitt's dimples are, eh ? Apart from trying to emulate a certain ex-filmfare editors style of writing, your review of Dev is as flat as your own dumb imagination.Any one who has seen the movie will vouch for the fact that the treatment of the storyline is fabulous. Yes, might be an old storyline but Mr. Nihalani's sensitive handling of the same is worth a dekko definitely.Grow up Mr. Fernandes - brush up your own skills before writing off Dev.

You know what's your problem Aporva you want to impose your feelings on other. Nasir is no dobut
a great actor. Actually Dev is based on the worst history of Gujrat . Director have tried to give a special message. It's not lecture class or some thing. Through out Mr Bachchan he wants to give some special messages which Nasir has unable to deliver in his films. and your so caaled lecture
is only possible for Mr bachchan and it's for masses
not for few sp called classes like you.
There is only one word screen personality and here No other indian actors can even step besides him. About AAmir khan
this is his style to do one movie in two years. It depends on personal level.

reviewer is mad
by sreeram on Jun 13, 2004 11:20 AM

Mr Vivek Fernandes has gone mad.He is not fit enough to be a film critic. He doesnt know the abcd of movies to criticize such a fine movie.I watched the movie and I would say the film really picks up in the second half and shows the truth,Formula films are produced by chopras, johars and barjatyas for your kind information Mr VIVEK FERNANDES not by Govind nihalani or Manirathnam.Even for a crap movie of shahrukh you and your critics will give a five star rating .Just because soem directors dont offer drinks for you and your other colleagues can bring down any good film.Inspite of your efforts movies like Yuva are still running to packed houses.

One advice-Mr Vivek either you change your profession or be constructive in your criticism.
