Breath of fresh air!
by Prasanna on Jan 20, 2004 01:28 PM

The feeling of the author is exactly how I feel. Enough of family dramas, love triangles and 'die for love' stories. Give us something fresh. Look into the society and find out what problems people face everyday. Enough of all the tear jerkers, the hypothetical plot and songs on foreign locales. Give us something real or atleast something which we could relate in our own lives. I want all the new film-makers of today to concentrate on the script, put their heart & soul to it. Just don't compromise on anything when you have the final script. We have so many movies releasing in a year. Say enough to quantity and let's start working on quality. Please do what 'Dil Chahtha Hai' and 'Lagaan' did to the industry. We need a 'breath of fresh air' and we want you to provide it and I'm damn sure that we would be bringing the 'golden man' home though 'Lagaan' missed it by a whisker.

True but not everything!
by kum on Jan 19, 2004 04:09 AM

Yes its true that Baghban has root in Avatar and kal ho na ......, thing is that people has accepted that and these movies r hit, i don't think any director, producer wud like to make flop movies. Experiments r happening in Bollywood but almost none of them getting success. if u'll see "koi mil gaya" tho' its new in content but the root is same emotions, melodrama etc. one can't blame bollywood they r making movies of gen next but its people that r not changing, they think that they have changed but i think that their "dil hai hindustani".

Its a big world, and world is not just u

Hi,
I find this article pretentious. Like music, each genre of film does cater to different sects of people. And the comments u make definitely wipes out any further suspicion that the "viewpoint" you are basing the judgements is really really narrow. Very true, some of the films, i too dint like. But that does NOT mean that this is not "class". Maybe it lacks to be in the "class" you are mentioning to, but it definitely caters to another sect of people. DCH is a movie that catered to very broad spectrum , well and good. But that doesnt mean , one gets license to imprecate another section of movies.

well said. i think the writer of this article is very pretentious, as well. the important part of any film is not whether it is a masala film or an art film, etc etc. it's about how well they convey an emotion, no matter which emotion it may be. and stop blaming shah rukh, he doesnt write the scripts. and he tried to be different with asoka, but which film was accepted? chalte chalte. he will make different films, too. after all, he's the one who did different films (darr, baazigar, kabhi haan kabhi naa) b4 aamir or ajay devgan tried to be "different." they've done their fair share of romance movies (QSQT, Diljale, Ishq, Mann, Chori Chori), the only difference is that shah rukh's were good.

I feel it will never come of age. its growth is stunted; perhaps because of congenital defects or the ill-qualified.

i always call it Sillywood.

it is Hollywood sans intelligence/intellect/technology.
the movie-making mob is very poor in language.it applies to screen writers, dialogue writers or lyricists/song writers.

no country in the world produces such useless film. perhaps these are made for rikshaw walas.

i watched the awards ceremonies. these are so poorly managed that people feel sick and turn off. indians overseas watch it out patriotic fervour as there is no other suitable entertainment on any channel. even the serials are silly and stupid in content and delivery.

i shall stop at this.

I agree
by Sudha on Jan 12, 2004 08:10 PM

Hindi movies are usually a mix of highly strung emotions and melodrama. The purpose why we watch movies (for fun and to relax) is beaten. We see situations like this in our everyday life. SO whats new in a movie
Saying we are Indian and this is our culture is incorrect.I refuse to agree that Indians get emotional , cry and wallow in self pity.
Get Something creative for us !!

Today's movies are horrible!
by Sapan Shah on Jan 12, 2004 01:45 PM

Yes I AGREE TO THE FULLEST with Mr Gautam. Apart from films like Dil Chahta Hai, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Lagaan, Hera Pheri (new), there are NO GOOD films being made atleast in commercial cinema. You keep on seeing heroines tear their pallu when hero's hands bleed, you see the same oath taken by the heroes of blood over mother's or father's death, you see the same old crap.

So why are people still watching these dustbins, I don't know. Hopefully times will change.

Dhoop
by Siddhartha on Jan 12, 2004 12:40 PM

I agree with the author. For me the movie of the year was Dhoop, with Pinjar a distant second. Apart from them this year must go down as a year which churned out most profitable trash.
