I agree with you Sunil. I wonder how films like Chalte Chalte, Baghban etc can become a super duper hit!!!

While our own earlier films showed restraint in tackling these subjects and aimed to make you think, the new breed is expert at creating scenes that can make you howl. In a cruel display of newly learnt craft, they successfully drag the audience along through mush, melodrama, grief and emotional waste.
True , yet the majority who dole out money to watch
these movies , until they stop - who are the producer-directors to deny them what they prefer-in the end if these movies make lots of money , it is a signal to Bollywood to stick with what works. As for Dil Chata Hai it was a success.

when will bollywood come of age ?
by Althaf AR on Jan 11, 2004 12:53 AM

Never can be the answer !!! Even if they try our audience will not allow them to do so. Kal Ho Na Ho is the biggest hit in overseas... NRI's love an actor like SRK hamming all the time. I wonder how the screenplay of KHNH has got on to oscar library... truly annoying !!! Pathetic is hindi cinema's state, a movie like Mathrbhoomi-A Nation Without Women can never find a commercial release. Truly speaking Chopra's, Johar's and Barjatya's together has done the damage. Yash Chopra was a great director once, but since Vijay he is also making mushy romances and a Capefear take off in between.
Sunil I disagree to you on one point, Baghban wasn't a great movie but it was atleast watchable because of the precense of mighty Bachchan, atleast he wasn't hamming like SRK.
Let's hope and pray that the new brigade of directors bring freshness... like Sujoy Gosh, Rajkumar Hirani, Parawal Raman, Farhan Akhtar, Shriram Raghavan........

stop cribbing
by radhika on Jan 11, 2004 12:17 AM

you obviously did not SEE the movies that you are cribbing about. in chalte chalte, raj is not a truck driver, he owns a transport business, meaning he is a businessman. many people own small businesses, are you trying to say that all of those ppl are uneducated, too? and kal ho na ho is not like anand, there is a whole different story there. when YOU come up with a good script and make a movie, then we'll see which movie we can compare it to.

When will Bollywood ccome of age?

Hi Sunil,

Great article. At last someone has the guts to speak against Johars, Chopras. All the movies they are making have just glitters, no soul. I guess if a director can kill a story like Devdas, they can do anything.
But I would also like to mentione here one point - what is the reason behind the success of these moves? And I feel the blame goes go to some extent the movies made in late 60s, and 70s(mostly acted by Dharam, AB etc.). All those movies have same story, same style. Watching those movies day after day the taste of indian people has changed and now they like only stupid movies.

regards,

Kamal Taparia

I think most of these well-known bollywood actors are over-hyped and it is unfortunate that not only filmmakers don't step out of their comfort zone, but neither do actors who are prone to acting out their own cultivated identities and do so ad nauseaum. As much as I like SRK, he needs to take some risks where acting is concerned. Resting comfortably on his five expressions is not enough. Amitabh Bachchan is another one who has not taken risks with his approach to acting. He has not had a hit in a while. But he too rides on his name and India worships him. So it would not matter if he sucked or did well. It's the same runny soup. In a way, I found this article to be very one-sided and lacking original thought and rather redundant. It also seems to be biased towards certain actors, namely SRK which is not fair to pick on his movies alone when other actors and their films are failing left, right and center. Put some more thought into how films should be made before you spit out biased articles like this. There is something to be said about constructive criticism and you need to learn how to think about it.

Baghbaan is copy of Zindagi
by Abhishek on Jan 10, 2004 10:10 PM

Sunil, I want to point out that "Baghbaan" is nowhere a copy of "Avtaar". Avtaar was a different film. "Baghbaan" is 100% copy of the film "Zindagi" starring Sanjeev Kumar.

Sunil,

what u said is absolutely right? We talk about globalisation and all other things. But we are still very localised as far as films are concerned. The million dollar question is who is responsible for this? Whether the general public who is immature to go for such sentimental melodramas or the film industry who decides what we have to see?

I dont agree

All the movies that were hits were wholesome entertainers. They kept us involed. The films from the so called other makers do not completely involve you. Though these films were good, a film can only be hit if you feel a part of the film and you feel for the charecters.
None of the so called different films hd that quality which means that the directors did not completely believe in the films they made.
