Well I am with U and fortunately all the 3 films U mentioned are the movies that I personally didnt like at all. Because I know there will be some more like them I have watched before and more will be coming in years to come. It is crowd who is supposed to reject and give way to new ideas and different concept. I dont think Karan Johar can ever make a thriller, comedy or a hatke movie. So I prefer to give his movie or any other senti movie a miss. I look at a movie as a classic entertainment media and not a rona dhona arena... :-) Well written article.

Good choice of directors
by Khurram on Jan 12, 2004 01:31 AM

I really liked the column and it was nearly what i wanted to say. I mean i found Chalte Chalte to awkward. Kabhi Khushi was good, but i really loved Dil Chahtha Hai and Jhankar beats cause those two movies did not make me feel awkward while watching. The characters, acting, scenerio was very believable yet shown with such wit and charm that it made it highly watchable. I hope that the new age directors pump some much needed fresh blood in the aging bollywood film formulas...

Divya Sharma
ignorant bliss
by Divya Sharma on Jan 12, 2004 12:36 AM

but dont forget that even dil chahta had an ending stolen from pretty woman- just rehashed a bit! good films are a thing of the past. its time for candy floss generation that lacks depth of character, and has little intellect. knowledge is powerful, but also makes you feel guilty, for your own inaction. the realization that we are limited in our capacities, makes us run for tried and tested shelters, both as audiences and fimmakers. people are happy in their ignorant bliss. just try to watch some indian television shows- nothing could be more redundant and regressive, yet they are hits in US, UK, India and elsewhere! so why should we complaint!

Shyam
so whats your problem???
by Shyam on Jan 11, 2004 11:56 PM

People will watch what they like! whats your problem with that?
Chalte Chalte - Agreed it was full of typical shahrukh's irritation though the major reason why people liked it was because it had realistic conflict between husband and wife. Dont we see in thousand families across how marriages are split because of inlaws and some lack of communication?
Baghban - The major reason it worked was beause of the realistic portrayel of ignorance of parents by their kids. This holds true for lot of us.
Kal Ho Na Ho - Agreed it was full of melodrama and only reason I liked it was because of Saif.
I think you are forgetting the very real essence in each of these movies. Its not the exaggareted melodrama that worked for the movies but its basic essence...atleast better than likes of BOOM! We are in somepoint all hypocrites.we drool over Matrix triology for the logic that really didnt make sence at the end and its over the top sequances but we wait to find fault in our movies. And bottom line is..why are you concerned that those movies are working? there are enough other kind of movies available-darna mana hei, dhoop, chameli to name few! So its not that you dont have choice so whats the fuss?

Bad News

I think the film industry has not grown up...they are repeating the same old thing in new pack...they should come out of it and present new ideas and place the industry in a forward postion where it should have to be 10 years before...

Good article
by Prashant Ulavapalli on Jan 11, 2004 04:48 PM

that was a grt article.
I totally agree with the author. Why don't well made films like Samay, Darna Mana Hai.... also the recent MunnaBhai MBBS; get more appreciation than these sterotyped Shah Rukh khan role movies. How many more years do we need to bare this stuff.

Kal Ho na Ho was a big bag of trash.. as i always expect the same from the so called "King Khan". We have been seeing these roles of yours from DDLJ (which was good, may be considered as a trend setter).. then came Kuch kuch hota hai..Mohabbatein.. kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham ( i would rather call it Gham hi Gham).

Please Mr. karan Johar and et al, try to do something different other than showing richness in every frame of ur Trash.

When Will Bollywood Come of age???????
by Barry on Jan 11, 2004 10:54 AM

There is a HUGE market for trash like K3G, Chalte Chalte, KHNH. So where is the incentive for film makers to create meaningful cinema? Films like Lagaan, Dil Chaata Hai, Sarfarosh, Astitva, Jhankar Beats are a rarity. Don't expect such films regularly. There are just a handful of film makers in Bollywood that have the guts to make something different.

The most easy thing is to make critics
by Rajkamal on Jan 11, 2004 05:32 AM

Hello Sunil,
Why you counted just three movie because they are hit..........it is pity that your critics does not count those movie which are not hit .I do agree with you in principle but critics does not mean to be unidirectional ,it has to be a multidirectional view .......this bollywood produce 100s of movie per year.. few are good what we call art movie because public do not want to see it, few are selling dream to those who has enough realism in thier life(those movie are hit & unfortunately your critics sees only these movies) ,few are giving a break of laughter, you call it comedy..............dear this is society of diverse people maximum want to go movie theater to face up thier mind, few want to go to satisfy thier intellectual hunger & few want to go to see a light comedy out of thier busy life .......this is not America or europe where Dream exist in thier real life .This is just India ,for few it exist in thier real life but not for all.....so dont compair with hollywood ,for them level of dream is
different.Eveveryone can not digest always to see intellectual thoughts in movie ........so .there is musical dream & for us there are few patches in between

Bravo Sunil !
by Ashok Dwarkanath on Jan 11, 2004 04:11 AM

Change is inevitable! But encouraging filmmakers like Karan Johar is a big mistake on the part of Indian audiences. If you think about it Ram Gopal Varma is one of the few directors who i feel has got substance. He plays with the camera work, with the script and a lot of his films are hits and for the ones that are not, he dosent care too much for they have won audiences for a lifetime.
