our performers goes on giving interviews before every film release how this role of theirs is so different than the run of the mill . the only difference in these roles are that they are so different than real life . fantacies are welcome , but them let them be marketed so . we forget directors like ritwik ghatak satyajit ray and adool gopalakrishnan . today if lagaan get;s recognition it's because of the hardwork of these stalwarts who have put india on the global map of cinema . amitabh , uttam kumar or kamal hasan had some sincerity or originality , but srk , govinda and others of this genre ( maybe except amir ) are cheap , vulgar and copycats only .
1) Cinematic plausibility is different from realism. While most of these films don't claim to be 'realistic', they have an element of cinematic plausibility - wherein a certain amount of 'creative license' is allowed, thereby, Preity on the New York maybe 'unrealistic', but does not falter in terms of cinematic plausibility
2)Hindi films only represents part of Indian cinema - and it's better for them not to represent other Indian cultures. A Bengali or a Tamil speaking in Hindi would also be considered 'unrealistic' by people like you, who crib at the lack of representation of the diversified Indian culture.
Other points are well taken - you only need to understand that the Hindi film industry is disorganised. This is the root of all problems
Two things: 1) No family drama is complete without some footage of a foreign country. India is not good enough for the mush producers. 2) Our actors and actresses make a living out of Hindi movies, but in their interviews they have to reply in English to questions in Hindi (there are exceptions - Amitabh, Govinda). I'm a great fan of Hindi movies - in the last year I liked 3 Deewarein, Khakhi, Hungaama. But it would be great to have less crap and more quality.
Each and every word of this article was true.I mean what is going on in Indian Cinema.I cant belive if this is the same industry which made masterpieces like Sholay,Mughal-E-Azam and Ardhsatya. And to be very honest I havent even seen KHNH,KKKG and the other such movies. Its even hard to remember the names of such movies they are so similar. But I think its impossible to change the trend, as the masses love these kind of movies.
I acomplete agree with you.Actually, the Indian audience of today is an emotional one. They can't face the reality. That is why they prefer fantasy movies of Shahrukh Khan and similar actors.Had the mindset of the Indian audiences been a practical one, someone genuine must have been a superstar today like the evergreen Amitabh Bachchan.
Actually we need more thoughtful articles like this!! I totally second the authors opinions - the movies that come out nowadays are total crap - whats the deal with heroes always coming out in style from a chopper? Come on, we need more realism.
I stopped watching hindi movies in totality thanks to this nonsense.
The non-relevance of DESI movies vis-a-vis the practical life is awful. One can count on fingers - the high-class- movies made in Indian Cinema now for every 2 years.
If you take 10 movies in 'USA' ATLEAST 4 ill be on patriotism lines - and they show Patriotism is respecting one's nation; not hating others.
I 've seen several DESI movies before coming to USA and thought our movies are at the highest level with the prejudice that most English movies concentrate on SEX. But after watching large number of movies here I feel pathetic about our Movies.
6-songs, one or 2 comedy tracks, some emotion supplemented with unnecessary HEROism.(I dont deny they are bad but they are monotonous and most of them do not have any quality in it). Hardly any movie ISPIRES the youth now. Our movies deem LOVE is the only thing our India is living for. They will not allow us to think of our society. No connection gruelling practical life.
Take some ENglish movies like: John Q (A father's fight to save his son and to manisfest the HEalth system's flaws). The excellent conception of thougths to build the simple story of a ring through 'LORD of The Rings'. No space to put on further....
Everything written in the article is perfectly true. Most Indians do not watch English or good Hindi/regional movies as a habit, so they also have no way of comparing garbage with true cinema. The problem is that if English or foreign or"Art" movies are released, then they are only released in top of the line selected theatres which everybody cannot afford (through both time and money). Films like Monsoon Wedding, Bollywood Calling, Jhankar Beats, Mitr-a friend, Bend it like Beckham were only released in one or two cinema halls in Delhi. When they are showing English movies, they can have Hindi or regional subtitles, so that people can understand. (This is much better than dubbed versions, which are a pain). Many Indians still believe that Western movies are all about sex. Only when people compare good cinema and commercial cinema, will they know the difference.
