Hey, these r 100% my feelings expressed by someone else..
by Deepak Patil on Mar 02, 2004 07:08 PM

What a article it is!!! I fully agree with it that movies like KAL HO NA HO, MAIN PREM KI DIWANI HOON, YAADEIN, DEVDAS, ASOKA, KABHI KHUSHI KABHI GAM etc etc are all junk.. Pure garbage!!!

Media and more importantly Indian public should start watching meaningful or at least, variety movies.. Movies like Pinjar, Teen Deewarein, Jogger's Park, Ek Haseena Thi were real gems of the last year...

I also agree with Vaibhav's opinion that National Awards Ceremony should be telecasted with wide and maximum publicity as they only reflect real talent recognising capability...

Why targeting SRK only?
by Jesudoss on Mar 02, 2004 04:11 PM

Whenever I read the discussions in the rediff message boards, I always notice all the views are mostly targeting SRK only. Everybody is comparing SRK films with today's 'so-called' art films like Pinjar, 3 Deewarein, Jhankar Beats, etc, etc. They might appeal for some ultra-modern multiplex audiences. But, most of the 'art-films' are mainly made of excessive violence or sexy dialogues. Do you guys want family audiences and children to see these kind of films? What family audience expect from movies is just a 3-hour of relaxation and entertainment. SRK films provide it plenty. So, there is nothing wrong on the part of audience to give patranoge to SRK films, since his films appeal to everybody from 5-year old child to 75-year old senior citizens.

And, finally one thing guys: 100-odd non-SRK fans' jealousy shown in rediff discussions can never outdo crore-odd peoples' love for SRK.

It will be better for you guys to close the article & discussions (which were real garbage) and mind your own works. And finally, don't try to disgrace SRK with your ridiculous views. You can never succeed in it.

Bye once for all!

We need more from films
by Abhijaat on Mar 02, 2004 02:03 PM

I fully agree with your views Vaibhav. But unfortunately most of us Indians enjoys these mushy non purposeful(they do not even entertain) movies. We need some meaningful cinema. Most of the movies made in India today are either a mushy love story cum family drama cum tear jerkers cum comedy or they are just jingoistically patriotic and have common contents as you hjave very interestingly pointed out.

But Good movies do keep coming in between like Khakhee, Maqbool, Ab Tak Chappan, Main Madhuri Dixit...., Mr. & Mrs. Iyer, Munnabhai MBBS etc.

real life experiences do!!!!
by gr.siva on Mar 02, 2004 10:57 AM

it is true that hindi films are revolving a small circle ( triangle?)whereas the day to day happenings in a common man's life worthy of a portrayal are copious. most of the present directors, born and brought up in royal families -making them tecnically sound- could do movies with the meagre stuff they get exposed to in their real life. they concentrate on a few genre of stories esp. love of riches, in which they are strong. in addition to love plenty of other emotions are also prevalent in our society.rather, more directors from different parts of society, economic class with exposure to various events of pleasure and sorrow supplying a strong knowledge of experience should come to the film industry to save it from becoming monotonous to the audiences. let the producers keep the doors opened for young and talented directors!!!!

Great article! SRK is total gabbage actor who migrated from TV series to commericial cinema, same old repeated scenes and running after someone else's wife or girlfriend in everymovie.THe only reason is that he got link and is nephew of dhilip kumar.

This media pays attention and only advertises such pathetic movies which only makes money. We had some good movies such as Pinjat.Jaago,3 dewarien which went unnoticed.

I live in states, watch english movies and a year later ,same movie i made in hindi version.Come on be creative and stop remakes. Are'nt you man enough

I agree but...
by Singa on Mar 01, 2004 08:35 PM

I agree but there are many movies that come out of India and it is the public that make these popular. It seems we the viewers are prepared to view what you refere to as garbage over and over again. I for one thoroughly enjoyed Pinjar and Khakhee, but that's not to say that I didn't find Baghbaan or KKKG entertaining. You forget that a large majority of India's cinemagoers go there to watch their favourite stars do a song and dance and help them forget the harsh realities of life if even for only 3 hours. So don't say good movies aren't being made, they are it's just that the public prefers escapism.

Stupid
by Gajala on Mar 01, 2004 07:13 PM

What nonsense the article is about, making a comparison between film fare and oscars....heights of stupidity!!! In that case, compare national film awards and Oscar. These films never even get nominated for our own National awards.

More from films
by Ankit on Mar 01, 2004 06:29 PM

Hi,
The article was indeed very well written Vaibhav.
But you overlooked one fact sitting there in New York, commercial Indian films first cater to the masses and then to the classes.
People make films for profits not as a social service.
Film-makers are dream merchants and are rightly called so.
Films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (K3G) and KHNH sell people a dream, you walk into a cinema hall and forget the monotony of your life for the few hours you watch a film.
I believe in watching films for fun and no-one should try to impose standards on what kind of films need to be watched.
We don't have to always learn something from films, you can go to college for that.
Take care,
-Ankit

Can't agree more with you!
by King_k on Mar 01, 2004 04:02 PM

Can't seem to agree more with you. Though I have not seen even a single one of those movies mentioned by you, for precisely the same reasons that you mentioned, I would still endorse your views about those movies. They are like those cheap western novels, that people like Archer, Sheldon and the likes dole out, that contain just about the same plot, cliches and message (predominantly proclaiming alleged american intellectual, defence and racial superiority). And people like both movies and books for the cheap thrills they provide!!
The secret of success for such 'works of art' is to appeal to easily accessible emotions of the viewer/reader and excite them. They don't bother to go deeper, but that's what distinguishes money from matter.
