Good Views

I agree with your views about indian cineama, but things like marriage, college life, and many others, which we see in indian movie, relate to our culture and we cannot see that in hollywood movies. Of course, hollywood movies are more dramatic and meningful, but on the other side indian movies reminds about the culture and tradition in india, which is liked by many NRI's.Thats why I think KHNH did very very well in US and UK than in india.

well said .Hope filmmakers can learn from this and do something about it.It is kind of a cultural degradation happening with absolutely no values .All that these movies does is justify everything through a prism of love, religion or patriotic fervour .
As far as i go i stopped watching hindi films long ago as they are nothing but a waste of time teaching you nothing but how to be a bunch of hippocrates.

y in the hell do u think karan johar makes these ridiculous punjabi based movies...the guy is a really good business man...and he knows what sells...i mean his last movie KHNH made like 30 odd crores...which is like 1/3 of the total revnues that indian movies made...i mean the movie was just a time pass...but i have many relatives in states who lived it too..cause it had shahrukh khan..and it was a funny romantic emotional movie..thats y its a hit abroad...so i mean there r both things these movies r a hit as people like them..and though some of them r crap and some of them r pretty good..and most filmmakers in india take movies as business rather than art...tahts y they make formula movies with 1 punjabi song and all other stuff...there r few ppl who are creative like nagesh kukoonor...ciao.

very true

i share the same thoughts as you vaibhav, but people like you and me are far and few between.i have been trying to convince lots of people in dubai and mumbai that what good cinema is about.but it is of no avail.what the masses tell is that they go to the theatre not to see realistic movies but they go for the simple pleasures of being entertained.so they accept these crap Johar,Chopra and Barjatya movies.another reason why these movies and ofcourse shahrukh khan do well is bcoz of nri's and pakistanis in places like uk and usa.no use wasting time in convincing people in india, pakistan,uk and usa.a non-actor like shahrukh is india's box-office king while real talent like aamir khan, nasseruddin shah,om puri, raghuvir yadav, etc have never been recognised in this country and never will.nasseruddin shah and om puri,if not better than are at least equal to amitabh in talent, but no use complaining.if they were in hollywood, they would have roles written for them and would be in the 20 million paycheck category.

I am completly agree with article. I don't know experienced stars like AB are agree to do such films. These films are really garbage. Sometime I forget which film we are watching. They should make more films like Khakee and Maqbool and I am expecting these attempts from Big directors like Subhash Ghai, Yahh Chopra & co.. Because why they are big because they did diffrent. But now I think they are lake of ideas.

Your initial part about the genres is totally true.
But what you say later is absolutely wrong!!.
How long have you been living in NY??
Do you know that the common man in India goes to the movies to get entertained. Not to appreciate any subject or story. He is not bothered whether the movie makes sense or not. As long as he can forget his daily worries and humm the songs he is fine.
When he goes he wants to forget that he does not own a house and that he dosent know how he will repay the loan that he has taken.
As for hollywood movies!!!!!!!!! HAHHAHA
man they are even more unbelievable spiderman!!! I havent seen one in my life yet.And I dont think i ever will.
There are very few movies like LOTR whihc are truly great. Even a hit movie like first 50 dates!!! where do u find that hapening?? Hollywood just does the junk better!!! If the production standards of indian movies were up to par then i guess no one would be compaining of hindi movies.

Lagaans story was also unbelievable.

Yes, but who'll move this garbage ?
by surekha tenneti venugopal on Mar 03, 2004 07:40 AM

Young Vaibhav says like it is.
Only, in India, the ground realities that shape an average Indian's life and make idiotic artificial films like K3G or KHNH so called 'hits' are-
1, the great divide between the rich upper and the middle/lower middle classes- the latter canot afford so many things that the rich upper class can. And so, all the garish designer homes, dresses and cars bring a dream-like joy to many.
2, in real life in india, parental pressure, unsympathetic school systems, and lack of real freedom to think for oneself so manipulate a young person's life, that he/she much rather escape into a fantasy world, he believes he too can aim for.
3, powerful film makers, financiers, distributors almost buy off even the media with their money power-K3G, KHNH are projected and reviewed as films of great fun, friendship, pathos, tragedy and of course, LOVE !
And 4, many Indians, do seem to identify with both loudly-guffawing, or syrupy, tear-shedding men and women; self-control, maturity or intelligent, analytical thinking are not a 'warm'Indian's norm !
Like the old-time Bimal Roys and Shantarams, the new brand of Rahul Boses, and Aamir Khans have to bring in change

kal ho na ho-was crap
by Warren on Mar 02, 2004 10:31 PM

great article boss. really liked it very much. what u said was extremely true. i went into the theatre with high expectations. but alas four hours of my life just simply went down the drain. i couldnt say anymore than those were the hours of my life i really wasted. and for all you people out there. sharukh is not god....he is just a human being.....kal ho na ho was a disaster. the crapiest and the craziest movie i have ever seen. fours hours of weeping, sobbing....thats it.....directors pls improve your storyline and sharukh instead of spending you time attening award ceremonies and stage shows, work on your acting, coz you are clearly not the best as you claim to be.
