A letter to Madhuri - MADHURI! MADHURI! MADHURI!
by MDFAN on Feb 09, 2004 09:58 PM

Hey La Dixit,

Some people cannot recognize your versatility.....but your fans want you back! We know that you can play the avengeful wife in Anjaam with the same ease as the lively and vivacious Nisha in HAHK; we know that you can play the defiant nautanki in Lajja with the same ease as the demure Chandramukhi of Devdas; we know that you play the hilarious 'con' of Khel with the same ease as the drug-addict wife of Zindagi Ek Jua; we know that you can play the courageous, and immensely likable bahu of Beta with the same ease as you play the 'jealous' lover of Pukar.....we know that you can play ANYTHING! Yes, the only 'flaw' is that you are a terrific dancer and all your films have practically featured some chartbusters! That's why your critics think of you more as a dancer than an actress - but we know the truth - you are, a legendary performer, charismatic, versatile, have wonderful dialogue delivery skills, a beautiful voice, and possess the eternal grace of an Indian beauty! You have everything.....touch wood!

Strike out RGV's films and let's look at Urmila's 'versatility'
by MDFAN on Feb 09, 2004 09:40 PM  | Hide replies

Dillagi - a college girl sandwiched b/w two boys

Deewane - a college girl sandwiched b/w two twins (HA! how different na!)

Deewangee - a girl sandwiched between a lawyer and a psychopath (WOW!)

Hum Tumpe Marte Hain - hahahahah!

Khoobsurat - jeez! Thanx Sanjay for saving this film!

Jaanam Samjha Karo - a dancer trying to win someone's love!

Judaai - THE ONLY NON-RGV film in her prime in which she displayed some acting skills!

OR maybe Shreeman Aashique or Aa Gale Lag Ja!!!!! HOW VERSATILE! *rolleyes* Of course, while she was cool in Tehzeeb, she pretty much spoilt that beautiful character in Pinjar!

It is damn clear that no-RGV, no-Urmila.......I had to struggle through her filmographies to find movies that did not have RGV as the dir!

Placing this 'bachi' in the same category as a stalwart like SRIDEVI is a JOKE IN ITSELF! And placing this doll over Madhuri, Kajol, and Rekha is the biggest stupidity of rediff.

Since when did Kajol become a "stalwart"?Just becoz she has big abbreviated films like PTHHT,KKKG,DDLJ,KKHH,PKTDK et al, doesn't mean she becomes a "stalwart".There are lot better ones.

Madhuri's versatility is as follows:

Dil:Rich man's daughter in love(marries later)
Beta:-do-(marries later)
Raja:-do-
HTHS:-do-
Jeevan ek Sangharh:-do-
Kishan Kanhaiya:-do-
HAHK:-do-
DTPH:-do-(thoroughly confused)
Saajan:Girl loves two men(so ,-do-)
Mohabbat:-do-
Arzoo:-do-
Yeh Raste hein pyar ke:-do-
Yaraana:-do-Yuck,haha
Rajkumar:-do-(super rich dad as a King)
Khel:-do-(rich mom now)
Parinda:Girl in love(no rich dad)
Tezaab:-do-(pimp daddy)
Koyla:-do-
Prem Pratigya:-do-
Dayawaan:-do-..was Vinod Khanna's film,but still
Ram Lakhan:-do-
Khalnayak:-do-..Inspector with red-choli
Etc etc.

Well, what does it leave you with?Devdas,Lajja and Prem Granth(Nargis revisited?) is what has happened in 15 years or so.The fact is the superb actress and dancer hasn't really got much chance to be "versatile".

The thing is,whatever she does, she does it so gracefully that you hardly feel like cribbing. So before you compare the versatility aspect of Madhuri with others, please rethink.

She is awesome, but actresses mentioned here aren't bad either.Versatility doesn't depend on the number of directors you work with.Ofcourse it is difficult to appreciate everyone!

Tabu/Urmila
by MDFAN on Feb 09, 2004 09:30 PM

SOmeone mentioned TABU as versatile!!!! JEEZ - gimme a breakkkkkkkk............she does nothing except play those oppressed woman roles.......be it Maachis or Astitva or Chandi bar - her emotions are almost the same...and she should def tune her dialogue delivery skills!

Urmila - IF this same article was written a year ago NO ONE would have named her...I can bet my life on it! She pretty much sucks in comedy or light hearted roles, is immature in crying (EHT - the court scene...I was laughing my heart out when her performance should have actually moved my heart...she just is not convincing! Even her performance in Kaun was half-baked!), and monotonical in dialogue delivery.......yeah, thanx to RGV, she was present in almost every movie from Rangeela to BHOOT and HE is a very versatile DIRECTOR....she was lucky enough to be part of those movies until other dirs took notice of her......if RGV had left her dangling her career would have been nowhere, cuz she simply doesn't have the charm or the star power or the screen presence or the talent to rise on her own.......but he protected her until she was chosen for good movies by other dirs....she should fall at his feet!

Someone has gotta address the issue with Aamir
by Balaji on Feb 08, 2004 10:10 AM

I really have a problem when most journalists call Aamir perfect. Geez, I find him to be light-years away from perfection. Do you think getting his hairstyle right, and doing different things outta the tea pot is perfection ? Will anyone tell me what makes Aamir Khan perfect ? Maybe someone needs to write a column on rediff answering this. Mahesh Bhatt once put things in the right place when he said "I dont think Aamir Khan has improved as an actor from when he started." I think he is 100% correct and if he is even remotely correct, then Aamir was just a perfect actor the moment he started acting!! Which is just plain ridiculous. Please take him outta the list. I get to see the same Aamir Khan in every film of his - plain old repetitive Aamir, the way he cries, the way he get angry making the body sway one way or the other and clutching his teeth, the way he laughs - it is always a mocking laugh. It is always the same Aamir. Someone plz explain why he is perfect. Heck, plz explain why he is anywhere near perfect.

Queen forgotten
by shailesh on Feb 07, 2004 12:46 AM

The article forgets to mention Madhuri Dixit and Shabana Azmi .

Madhuri Dixit ruled the film industry for more than a decade with variety of roles . Madhuri was refreshing and convincing in each film good or bad.
She did experimental movies like 'Sangeet','Prahaar', 'Dharavi' at peak of her career. She poured life into films like 'Raja' and 'khalnayak'.Beauty, dance ,comedy , tragedy ; name it and She has it all.

my comments on the column
by srivatsala on Feb 06, 2004 04:22 PM

i agree with sukanya's list but the actors are also
helpless because very less films are made in the
bollywood which are good enough to capture the
talents of our actors.
