Demonetisation
by Prakash Bedekar on Nov 22, 2016 03:21 PM  | Hide replies

Hon PM Modiji, Sir, why not make a round around the city and find out for yourself long ques of people standing in for hours together for withdrawing their hard earned money they have deposited. Why is it that no MLA or MP forget about monister from BJP is not seen standing in que? Were they informed well in advance? What right you have to restrict people from withdrawing money which they have deposited in good faith that when needed they can avail the money? Why not see the reality about what is happening and accept that this move was undertaken in haste without doing proper preperations?

achievements of 69 yrs.

90 per cent of transactions in India is through cash and not plastic.

Only 46 per cent of adult India has bank accounts and many of them are dormant Jan Dhan accounts.

22 per cent of India only has Internet penetration.

19 per cent of Indian households do not have access to electricity.

This is the kind of economy you are dealing with.

.....this man perhaps saw himself crumbling like his illegal-cash turned into paper-trash ! many more would like to use this opportunity to take out their frustration as miserably failed humans in reallife that they ended up indulging in useless fear-mongering.....characterless, indifferent and irresponsible members of indian society !

Demonitisation...
by V Bhujanga Rao on Nov 22, 2016 12:51 PM  | Hide replies

Mr Athreya is either highly biased or this subject which happened for the first time at such scale and at striking speed is beyond his comprehension. I haven't seen all those who are criticizing offering another solution to black money problem. This is best thing that has happened to our country which is going to make economists unfold new theories. One ounce of our PM's commonsense is better than a ton of theories of our economists !!! The whole world is going to see this happen.

Nothing but Criticize
by Manabendra Pathak on Nov 22, 2016 11:44 AM

Don't use jugglery of word just for criticism. What poor is going to loose by depositing or exchanging old currency? Many are talking about 'Q', think before Vajpayee govt. people used to make Q for LPG gas, phone, EB & what not. During election time many party announce freebie and people used to make Q for the whole day in open place in front of PDS shop. I am not justifying Q but you need to understand the massive operation and do they have any solid idea to curb black money and if they have why didn't they disclose to govt.?

Poor earn only Rs. 37 per day?
by gururaj upadhyaya on Nov 22, 2016 11:18 AM  | Hide replies

It is surgical strike on those (or close to) in the previous government who stated that an average Indian earns only Rs.37 per day. If that is true then such Indians should not be affected at all by demonetization.

Good article...
by sivakumar ramachandran on Nov 22, 2016 11:13 AM  | Hide replies

Mr.Athreya has well substantiated his view points and I think we need to agree with most of it irrespective of our political association.

Demonetization may have been done with good intentions but is a crude approach. Black money exists in almost all countries to a substantial extent except in mature economies like US, Germany, UK, Japan etc. In fact, in India, it is estimated to be lower that the Asian average (22% against 25%). Latin America has up to 35% while Africa has up to 45%! So, black money can never be eliminated - it can at most be reduced since it is a deep rooted problem within the country's economic super structure. Besides, what we often forget is black money is also part of the economy / GDP and indirectly benefits citizens since it also actively traded - it's only problem is that it is not taxed. Also our country's method of spending the tax payer's money is highly controversial and inefficient.

Even for an optimist, this move may only seem to fetch marginal improvement.

As Mr.Athreya says, the best way to reduce (not eliminate) the black money is to pursue through regular channels in a systematic way.

We are strong to face this small problem against the bright future. Is it now that the opposition has realised our plight in all this 60 years. It is the corrupt who want to create this rumours as they have nothing to say against this wonderful step that shri modiji and party have taken. Jai Hind

Theoretical knowledge never ran a family, nor a business, nor a country.
For such a huge step, please wait for the reality to unfold. Yes, Indians like you churn out poor students, give opinion when you should observe and give yourself and the country some time.

Yes we are all going through hardships. I am confident that the poor, the honest will benefit the most when the dust settles down.
Talk about the Bank employees working day and night, talk about the almost perfect secrecy, talk about taking the corrupt by surprise, talk about the logistic challenge and how the Government is working on it. Sorry but you are living with medieval knowledge ---grow up !!
