It is amazing how Rediff keeps bringing writers out of the wood-work so regularly to create controversy. The logic for printing 2000 rupee notes is that the news of a new 1000 or 500 rupee note would have become public knowledge weeks before demonetisation and then the whole exercise would have been wasted. The statement that BJP would have made the conversion of old currencies is peurile as the only thing they could have done is to deposit it in banks for which there will be records. However, anyone of average intelligence would have taken the government seriously when they warned about strict action on black money following the voluntary disclosure scheme. Did they expect the government to give a week's notice following the announcement? Strange logic indeed!

Can any BJP supporter tell me what exactly is the purpose of the newly issued Rs2000/- note ? Shouldn't the Govt. have concentrated on Rs 500/-(new) and Rs 100/- notes ?

. You cannot start digitization immediately. 2000 notes help easy movement of cash in Business that depend on cash.
Example: You can buy from a grocery shop in lower denominations, but the grocery shop owner has to purchase in bulk and it will help him if he uses 2000 notes. Imagine the trader carrying 100 notes for bulk purchases. Imagine the shortage of 100 rupee notes then.
Mr Athreya may be an economist,but his views appears highly biased.Either he does notunderstand the steps taken by govt or he does not want to understand otherwise he would not have written so.

2000 notes would help avoid the cash crunch in large transactions. A major portion of the business in India is still carried out in cash and removal of 100 and 500 notes needs an effective alternative for high value cash transactions
......and no well-intended mission has gone waste.....one can only speculate the extent of benefits of the exercise.....what needs to be granted to the Govt. is its willingness to recognise the dire need of such an action despite the huge economic and political risk to the Nation in the event of its failure.....and therefore, one can safely say that failure of demonetisation cannot be an option as THAT would be a CALAMITY ! A billion voices cannot fail is besides the point.
.....speak strongly in favour of demonetisation the way it is being implemented....unfolding the necessary steps being taken by the Govt. and the banks to ease the money situation for the poor and the farmers in particular in the villages and for households where a marriage is on the cards, other than hospitals. The Chiefs of both the banks with several thousand branches and more than a lakh ATMs have said the nationwide situation will be in good form in less than a week from now and come to absolute normal in a month or so.....so nothing to worry anymore.....some difficulty anyway to everyone for a greater cause of our children who will get to live, grow and earn decent livelihoods in a clean and honest economy unchallenged by a parallel economy of illegal-cash-rich mafias, hoarders and blackmarketeers ! People's real income will go up with increased purchasing power of every hard-earned rupee of the labourers and the farmers all over the nation.
