What else could be done? In a democracy, there is absolutely no accountability. Each person would try to blame all the other people, except himself / herself.

Govrnment is looting the public.
by Amrit Basak on May 17, 2011 02:20 PM

In international market for last 15 days crude oil price is crashing and went down by 12% . But instead of decreasing the petroil price our mobocratic government is increasing the price and threatning to increase more and more in coming days. We need to act against this unpopular government. They dont have right to continue. They must resign on moral ground.

how to fule price rise
by rajkumar bakshi on May 17, 2011 01:36 PM

The Govt. including the state Govts. should reduce the taxes, vat, ED and customs charges, to reduce the burden on general public. The subsidy on gas cylinders shuold be restricted to ssay 9-10 cylinders a year, diesel prices with subsidy should be only on small vehicles, not for luxury vehicles.

Cut the Taxes and Duties
by Subramaniam Sudhakar on May 17, 2011 12:41 PM

Government is leving Rs. 27 taxes and duties on one litre of petrol. Bring down this duties and taxes. Introduce a standard and flat duty and tax per Kilo litre of petrol.
So that if there is increase in International price of crude there will not be increase in the taxes and duties levied on the petrol.
This is true of Diesel and LPG.

LPG price is being icreased to favour an increase in CNG which is produced by group of
favoured Indian companies.

Pls learn how other neighbouring countries are
selling to the consumer at a lower price.

The surge in increase in prices does not augur
well for the Economic Professor - Mr. Manmohan Singh.

Standard and flat Duties and Tax
by Subramaniam Sudhakar on May 17, 2011 12:33 PM

As Petrol, Diesel and LPG have direct bearing on common man. The Government should levy a flat duty and taxes per kilo litre of crude.
As we see that Rs. 27 is being charged per litre of petrol as duties and taxes. Government is the one levies these taxes on the oil producing companies. These companies should be privatized. Government funding for social projects should not come from this revenue.
Secondly, the yield from crude is to be increased by oil producing companies.

Lastly, we need national debate and white paer on the production cost and other cost inputs of petrol, diesel and LPG.

Increasing LPG price to subsequently increase the CNG to accommodate companies like RIL is
obviously seen by the common man.

Stop cheating all the people all the time.

Petrol Price Hike
by praveen Dyta on May 17, 2011 11:00 AM

Lot of thoughts being put here !! Appreciate the partitipation !!! but do we realise that the Govt, by the way of taxes is earning more money than the OMCs ( Oil Marketing Companies ) !!!! thats the irony of it.

WE are citizen of india, from middle class, have the habit of adjusting to any decisions taken by the the these so called politicians who live in elite society, does not pay taxes, rents for the govt accomodations, travel, fly free etc.
On the other side, we pay 33% of our salaries as income tax, and taxes on everything we buy, criticize the for the next three days and then get on with the habit of adjusting with life !!!

Do we need one more Anna HAzare to start the protest country wide for such things also !!! Why cant we show our protest by not buying fuel for one day nationwide !!! Do you know that if all of us donot buy petrol for one day, the OMCs will go bankrupt !!! We have been paying taxes religiously, only to see that the scams turning this tax payer's money into black and getting stashed away in some swiss banks !!! are we middle class people so predictable !!! can we see our country is headed of this is the way Govts, shy away from responsibilities towards the middle class citizens of india !!! Its time to think and initiate a public protests nationwide like egypt !!! guys, share your views on this and can we start a blog on this and spread this campaign !!!!

Cut down production cost
by Rajeev Shukla on May 17, 2011 09:44 AM

Oil companies should curb their spendings instead of looking to market their products at a higher rate. They should optimize their exploration, refining, distribution, and marketing. Its time they pulled up their socks.
Secondly, the government should remove taxes from petrol and keep the prices in check.

hike - austerity & advertising
by ashish on May 17, 2011 09:37 AM

it is needed to review the overheads borne by these oil companies. instead of raising prices to improve performance can't they practise some austerity, cut down cost of their luxuries they enjoy, as public servants shouldn't they choose to move in cars that are priced reasonably. secondly, why do oil companies need to advertise, and spend ridiculous amounts of money on celebrities. all oil companies are public sector u/t, where a consumer does not differentiate between the Indian Oil Co or Bharat Petroleum, if he has to take a refill, so where is the need to spend crores on using brand ambassadors to promote the name. personally the bureaucrats need to do some serious soul searching instead just passing on the burden, plainly the most easy way out

What a discussion
by Ganesh V on May 17, 2011 09:34 AM  | Hide replies

The problem is those who increase the price does not have to pay for it and those who pay for it are not asked before the increase. Unless, there is forum of discussion (representation from people) on these issue, these will continue.

In true democracy (Eutopia), each and every important matter should be discussed among Non-Elected and elected (MPs) representatives of people in general

That forum will be bribed by the politicians / oil companies. instead why cant we think through our brains? 30 yrs ago also we lived without these maruthis, i10, ford bikes, scooters etc. by simple, health effective & non polluting bicycle. why cant we adopt the same technique? we dont need 4 lane / 6 lane / 8 lane roads. no toll taxes or govt. / oil companies does'nt need to provide subsidy against petrol/diesel instead can provide more subsidy for LPG cylinders for household purpose. People might think that I am dreaming, but requesting all to think on those lines.

Increase Petrol Price to Rs 100 a litre
by bewakoof on May 17, 2011 09:21 AM  | Hide replies

Instead of increasing these prices by Rs 1,2,5 etc, the prices should be increased to Rs 100 a litre in a single shot and ban sales of private diesel vehicles.

The incremental rise is not helping anyone as people slowly get used to paying more.

Instead the long term objective should be to switch the behaviour of people, government and the industry.

People 'actually' need to think of using less-polluting & cost-effective ways of commute.

Government need to work towards providing infra-structure for improved mass-commute and encourage bicycles and two-wheelers.

Industry will need to come out with potential sustainable alternative approaches.

I'm all for using public transport. But the question is - does a dependable system exist in India?
