Indian Airports
by Sagar Tanksali on Aug 04, 2011 02:04 PM

There's no airport in India that can be called world-class. Our airports are simply inefficient - no two things. Apart from that, most of the airports are also dirty.

However, among the ones mentioned in the essay, I really liked Dabolim and Trivandrum airports. This is mainly because they're a throwback to the seventies, if not sixties. They're both small but quaint with tiled roofing, old fashioned personnel and accented announcers. In short, I like these airports the way one likes vintage cars.

Kerala ... largest tourist destination? Joke of the year !!! none of the tourists take a direct flight into Kerala's Airports. The tourist destination of India is Goa.Kerala has a weird way of stealing from tourists. Check their tariff... it doubles from offseason to "season" to "chrismas week". Ofcourse, I love Kerala for its scenic beauty but the people are really bad. The mallus living out of Kerala are better.

Hopefully, the 5th int'l airport will be at Aranmula ...

NSC Bose international airport,Kolkata being called spectacular is a joke.In fact,a new airport terminal is being constructed and I hope it will be really spectacular.

Spectacular means sensational or thrilling,in that sense not all are spectacular. They are just upto the standard.I consider Singapore Changi airport as really spectacular !

By the way,we have to put spectacular people also in airline services to make the buildings spectacular. Many staffs are old, slow and at times rude.

India Airports are worst quality excuted(BIG SCAM)
by milind sorkhade on Jul 30, 2011 01:00 PM  | Hide replies

Rediff and All Readers,
I work for external cladding work company and having 16 years of field experience. I got the chance to work on three international airport projects in india i.e. Mumbai, Delhi, Goa.
Also I worked as a private consultant for two other B-tier airport i.e Raipur and Chandigarh.
All I know is, the excecuted quality of all material is very substandard. All the contractors are selected by AAI (Airport Authority) on the basis of Bribe & comission. All the officers in AAI are corrupt. Even Mr. Praful Patel took commission in Mumbai Airport New terminal, which is under construction.
In this scam ridden country, this scam is not yet made public, because thr are so much already in the news, so nobody have time to do investigation in this.
As per Govt. Policy in first phase apart from Four Major Metros, 38 other Tier-B airports in small cities to be renovated. For which bribe and commission rates are already fixed depending upon the type of contract awarded to companies.
So Rediff, Pls make ur self correct and rename this article as 10 worst airports in India.
Note: Photo of Mumbai Intl Airport is not correct. Photo shown is of domestic airport.

Srinagar Airport
by sanjaya gupta on Jul 30, 2011 12:48 PM

Srininagar Airport should have been named after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru - the first Indian prime minister; he is the best known Kashmiri in the world !

And much credit goes to him for creating the current situation of Kashmir for an independant and soverign India.

Modern India which has been governed by his own descendant party the Congress, has and is governing the country for so many years, so I suspect the government is all equipped to defend/ secure the airport with the name change.

KOLKATA AIRPORT IS THE WORST AIRPORT IN INDIA
by Saubashya Sur on Jul 30, 2011 12:43 PM  | Hide replies

Absolutely ridiculous how can Kolkata airport find itself being called "spectacular". It is the worst possible airport in India. No modernisation, worst baggage handling, even touts in baggage handling, very dirty, worst passenger amenities. Major airline slike British Airways shifted out of Kolkata, Lufthansa is also planning to do the same. All these have been because of CITU. These idiot communists wherever they go want to remain backward. Modernisation of Kolkata airport has been strictly opposed by Communists and CITU. Communists go and live in mud houses and lick the fett of ur Chinese masters. Hope Mamta Banerjee will do something for the modernisation of this important airport.

Trade unionism is always a problem in Kolkata and it is not limited to CITU. The other unions are equally bad.
That aside, i think you should know that improvement of airports is the sole prerogative of AAI and not a state matter. So, Mamata Banerjee has no say on this matter.
Finally, the Kolkata airport upgradation project has been started almost 2 years back and the new terminal should become operational in 2012, if things go according to plan.

I was in Kolkata airport a week back and I can confidently say this is one of the WORST and PATHETIC airports of India!! There are not even enough seats for checked-in passangers to sit! I was sitting on the steps of the staircase~! I felt ashamed to do so! The airport looks dirty, shabby and untidy!

More observations
by ContraView on Jul 30, 2011 12:42 PM

Chennai - Big chaos outside arrivals

Delhi T3 - Walk for miles inside the airport....Comeout for your car, and you will enter a cellar like area that is so suffocating

Bangalore - 1-2 hours of torture to reach the airport

Hyd - Same as Bnglr...but manageable

Kol - No comments!! Fish market is generally better than this airport

Best airports are - Goa, Cochin, Ahmedabad, etc with something like "Walk to Work" for passengers.

Mumbai - Though congested one, there is no nonsense both inside as well as outside the airport. You hit the highway in flat 3 min once you comeout. Lucky one that is not yet "WORLD CLASS"!!
