It should have a better design
by Gaurav GUPTA on Oct 20, 2010 04:21 PM  | Hide replies

The design is not impressive or aero-dynamic considering that it has come from IIT. They could have gone for an arrangement with solar cells on top with an electric motor which aids peddle effort eg when going up hil or an upramp of a flyover and while comming down it can use the dynamo to charge a battery which will give reserve power

Well, after converting it to hi tech, neither farm nor riskshaw puller will not be in a position to execute the basic plan i.e., promoting the income of rikshaw drivers while manufactures also do not eat red ink.

I think, typical engineering is not sufficient my freind.

by TopDeshbhakt on Oct 20, 2010 04:14 PM  | Hide replies

Rickshaw pulling is a regretful activities when one person pull another persons for just 5 bucks. In long run it should be stopped and all Rickshawwala should be opted for other productive activities or at least to be ensured that no more children join these activities. There is no place in civilized society for some people earn so less by pulling others.

Rickshaw pulling is never a regretful activity. It is poverty which is regretful!

Don't know why this argument comes from a civilized society.. In such a society, every job is a dignified job. Every job involves giving some convenience to another for which the latter pays to the former. Moment you find some jobs undignified, you are moving away from psychological civility ( hypocrisy )

Every job should pay you enough money to live a dignified life. Riskshaw pulling is not that job unless Rikshaw puller works for tourism purpose charging 100 buks per tour to historical place. you can me sitting in front of computer can not understand the plight of riskshaw puller. I have talked to many of them and non want their children join these job.

A real world working model needs lots of considerations which may seem trivial once it is achieved. It is very easy to do some armchair analysis about high tech. Going out in the real world and getting it done and delivering it to the intended audience is the real challenge. If you can do better then do it, just talking or passing judgements wont help.
If the richshaw pullers feel it has helped them substantially then it is worth applauding. Maybe all the high tech we are thinking of will work its way into this over time.

They should sell these rickshaws to London where there is a growth to pull tourists.

Every able body needs means to earn a living, there are many ways to earn. If nation was full of doctors, who will do rest of the work?

Man pulling man has been graded inhuman anywhere. Why not invent something better than this kind of thing say a rikshaw which uses electric motor and can be charged by solar PV system! This all does not do any credit to Indians! Not in 21st Century, Send this inventor to the time of Turkish Invaders!

Agree. Innovators have to find ways of stopping this. We have auto-rickshaws, which can be improved upon to become less polluting, fuel efficient and with meters that cannot be tampered with.

Can't believe this came out of IIT.

Rickshaw pulling is more of a socio - economic issue and is indeed inhuman. But the efforts made by Dr Pradip Sarmah must be appreciated, he has made a successful effort to reduce some pain of these rickshaw pullers.

if they would afford those technology there would be no ricksaw puller. It should not be considered the end of the road, but start of something new and more to come.

IITs can do better things
by Fiesta Balloons on Oct 20, 2010 03:38 PM

Though the idea is good but it doen't need an IIT brain to fix few rods and polythene roof.
Let them come up with solar powered rickshaws or rickshaws with gears for easy movement.

Wake up IITans you have better things to do for the country. This is crap and media should stop promoting such cheap stuff.

cheap and fast transport
by jobseeker on Oct 20, 2010 03:30 PM  | Hide replies

Rickshaws are transportation hazard. Slow movers, often causing congestion in narrow streets of India's cities and towns and its costly too. Auto rickshaws are cheaper and faster and travel longer distances. Often I have seen rickshawpullers have unions and dont allow autos (vote bank politics). It is also inhuman way of labour. IITs with all the money they suck from the country( many more coming up) just to get a passport abroad and happily settle. I think they should come up with better ideas to solve the real problems of transportation, with respect to enviornment, economy and society, rather than earning a name from some weekend project. Anyway, the rickshaw bank concept is quite good in general sense.

The rickshaw was not invented by IIT. It was an idea of a Vet Doctor, who felt for thr rickshaw-wallas. He only got it designed thru his IIT friends as per his idea. Look at the benifits it has given to the Rickshaw-wallas and appreciate the efforts of Dr. Sarma. Dont blame the IITans who helped their doctor friend in materialising his small innovation.

The roof top should be used to install a solar panel. an additional gear train should also be attached to the rickshaw. This rickshaw can than be run as a hybrid vehicle.
