At last wisdom dawned on Indian engineers
by thyagaraja murthy on Oct 20, 2010 01:11 PM

At last, the design engineers of our nation could put their minds together and design a pedal rickshaw which took into account the comfort of the puller. A shade over his head in hot sun or pouring rain. India produced or marketed innumerable automobiles, both 2 wheelers and passenger cars of all hues. But it took 60 years of post Independence India to design and build a rickshaw with some comfort to the man who pulls/pedals it.It is a moment of pride and also a moment of shame to the entire nation.

But one idea is to provide some kind of electric motor to help rickshaws to climb steep roads. I have seen many times, those poor guys sweating their life while riding on a steep way.

Conceptually agreed. However the whole idea of manual rikshaws is run without fuel hence cost. Adding elactric motor would need charging/batteries / cost/ maintenance that the owners of these rikshaws cant afford nor will be vaible commercially as their fare cannot increase.. Its sad to see them climbing steep roads.. may be some gears like high end cycle may help without adding to running cost even though it may make rickshaw cost bit more

Whts bad if IIT Engineer design some cost effective model for 'poor ricksaw wala'? or you want to see them designing some big machines/ aircrafts/ heavy engins/ softwares only.

our country is spending lot of money on the education of IITains, they must contribute some good innovation which will help the poor people.

you need to change the mind set first... only 10% of IIT engineers are good when one batch complete... i know many who does not even match to plus two guys
