Volume not speed
by S M on Nov 19, 2010 12:42 PM  | Hide replies

If we want speed why not take an airplane. We need trains that can carry large number of people at good speeds. These high speed trains do not have more than 5-6 compartments. Indian trains have up to 22-23 compartments.

Ever heard of carbon neutral travel? High speed trains will make people use less of air travel and promote carbon neutral travel.

When Railways Minister of India announces faster trains, speed is increased from 50Km/Hour to 70 Km/Hour, and Super Fast tag is attached to it.

In China, they don't even have a Railway Minister.

CRH380As, which clocked 420km/h on the newly opened Shanghai-Hangzhou HSR and is capable of top operational speed of 380km/h. A CRH380BL left the factory gate a couple of weeks back and is preparing for a go at 450km/h very soon. China is also in the midst of building het 1st 500km/h train for technology test and demonstration purposes. This ultra-fast train is scheduled to roll off the production line in March 2011 and will aim for new world record on the 1318-km COMMERCIAL (the French 574km/h record was achieved on a strecth of testing tracks) HSR line linking Beijing and Shanghai.

Then there is the CRH380C that we can look forward to in 2011. By the end of 2012 there will be at least 6 types of 380km/h or plus trains serving a high-speed rail network measuring 12,000km in length: CRH380As, CRH380ALs, CRH380Bs, CRH380BLs, CRH380Cs, and CRH380CLs.

All those people who are awestruck at China...
by Sesha on Nov 19, 2010 11:23 AM  | Hide replies

Please remember that India is not China. Here there is a democracy and all of you have a voice and platform to express it. In democracy it will take time as people resort to courts for greivance redressal when they are affected by new initiatives. Courts will take time to decide. These are the inherent constraints in a democracy. We cannot compare with USA also who has three times the land size and three times less population. I'm not saying the political parties are noble and they are taking initiatives. But inherently ours is a slow moving machine. If we talk to the rural poor they would not be thinking about high speed trains. Rather they are fighting for three square meals daily without interruption. The government need to prioritize that education and healthcare before coming to high speed rail network. If we argue that private coroprations can do without government getting involved, the private parties will not care a damn about the people affected. The government cannot be blind to those issues. It will create a social problem between the haves and the have nots.

Your post suggests that it is high time for the elite class to leave this land and never return.

It is slow, it has problemes..oh how bad can a country be ? Haven't seen hell yet but it must be similar to India.

So why did you come back here? It is not that you knew about this after having returned from Shanghai. Before leaving to Shanghai itself you would have known that there are no trains running at 350 kmph? isn't it?

Frank,

What elite class are we talking about. The elite class in this country will not be even 1% and the ever greedy middle class will not be more than 20%. The government need to address 80% of the people which is more than 800 million. The elites have the means so why don't they go wherever they feel it is heaven. Why complain sitting here?
