3 Reasons why your National Carrier, Air India should keep flying
by Kabeer on May 26, 2010 11:07 AM  | Hide replies

3 reasons why national carriers must be run by Govts particularly the developing nations:

1. If your ailing grand mother has to fly on a stretcher only Air India offers at the same Economy fare much like many national carriers. No private ailines offer at that cost but charge more.

2. If your North Eas was not severed from the mainland despite cultural differences, one reason is your national carrier flies to these places even if it economically bleeding is to keep the nation in one piece unlike mine which broke into two.

3. Much like PIA, Air India's air hostesses do not wear revealing attire unlike many private foreign airlines who are forced to wear revealing attire. In times of crisis, these air hostesses haave to be busy protecting their modesty but farrying passengers through emergency exits.

4. While AI strike is going on, British Airways too on strike (if there are some western admirers!)

All the reasons ARE BOGUS.

Ultimately AI operates on Tax Money paid by Middle-Class. Fuel/Salaries/Planes ARE NOT FREE - irrespective of where you fly.

A PAKISTANI's TWIN EXPERIENCES WITH AIR INDIA-judge yourself!
by Kabeer on May 26, 2010 10:54 AM  | Hide replies

I am a Pakistani originally from Lahore.

Let me share 2 anecdotes about Air India and then judge your national carrier!

I travel very frequently from London, Amsterdam, New York etc.

As PIA dont have very good frequency, to feel at home, I choose Air India as they serve my kind of food and understand my sensitivities and most pilots and crew speak my language, Punjabi.

Mostly for health reasons and as my doctor advised I go vegetarian as much as possible.

Once on a very long flight from London, there appears to be short loading of Veg meals on an Air India flight. Though I ticked my meal pref as Veg, the airhostesses, after counting, and seeing my name and nationality thought I dont mind going non-veg and gave away all the veg fare to others.

When she brought to me non-veg fare with a request, I told her for religious reasons I can not take non halaal meat.

The airhostess who is of South Indian origin, for religious reasons is a strict vegetarian. (as told to me afterwards) She was kind enough to give her veg meal to me and went starving for 10 hours.

I was amazed at her politeness and sacrifice and pride to save her airlines prestige. Short loading of Veg fare was not her fault. She went that extra length not only to see a customer is happy and more so, that a passenger do not seem to be discriminated against because he is hailing from a non-friendly nation.

Under circumstances, most European/American airlines give cookies or a cheese sandwich

Second, I want to tell you another that happened more than 20 years ago.

I went to Hyderbad (India) as one of my Lahori friends was getting married to a local Muslim girl.

Upon his insistence, after the wedding I checked out of the hotel to be with the family in the old town.

Since I was in India, I took a special VISA to visit Lucknow as well besides Hyderabad.

My outgoing domestic flight was the next day morning at 7-30 and in those days a half an hour check-in was sufficient.

I left the marriage party and decided to spend the night with an old Lahori family where only two elderly couples stay.

I was told that I can get an autorickshaw to go to airport as there were not taxi system in Hyderabad in those days. Hotels had but I checked out.

When I wanted to take a rick in the morning at 6-00 when I came on the road there was none and patiently waiting I was told by a passerby that there is a strike by rickshaws. I was getting nervous.

I requested a person going on a Vespa to drop anyway near the airport if he was going on that way explaining my urgency to catch the flight and VIsa restrictions.

He in fact took a detour and dropped me bang at the airport door just in time for my check-in. When I profusely thanked him for the trouble he took, he smiled and said it is all right and said that he works in Indian Airlines booking department in the city office.

A hindu (mentioning dispel notions) a booking clerk neednt go out of way to drop a Pakistani

The cycle of nationalizing and privatizing is a big scam. Both are money minting opportunities for politicians.

Once lot of tax is put to build assets of a public enterprise, they are sold off to chum businessmen at a very discounted price. It involves lo(o)t of kickbacks plus contributions during election.

Irresponsive and irresponsible aam admi deserves this and worse.
