steve jobs stole the GUI idea from xerox, palo alto
by wizardo id on Jun 20, 2010 04:18 PM  | Hide replies

By Al Fasoldt © 1992, The Syracuse Newspapers
In the early 1980s - Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak - drove over to a computer research center run by Xerox in Palo Alto, Calif. At "Xerox PARC," as the laboratory was called, a friend who worked at Xerox took them on a fateful tour.
The two Steves spotted an odd computer at PARC called the Star. Practically nobody remembers the Star these days, but the guys from Apple gave it a place in history. It made such an impression on them that they decided they had to make a computer of their own that worked the same way.
They borrowed the ideas of putting boxes on the screen, called windows, from the Star, and they also copied the way the Star showed little drawings of things on the screen. The little drawings, called "icons," did various operations when you moved a pointer over them.
The key to everything was a mouse - a device the size of a bar of soap that you rolled around on the desk beside the computer. Wherever the mouse went on the desk, the pointer went on the screen. When you clicked the button on the mouse, the computer went into action.
By now you know the rest of the story. The result of all of this was the Apple Macintosh. It made Apple rich and made IBM envious. But it had an even greater effect at Microsoft, the software company that IBM made famous when IBM picked Microsoft's DOS - MS-DOS - as the standard operating system for its PCs.

Very true, I saw a documentary recently which contained interviews of Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, Xerox execs etc.. in which this was mentioned.

Still the credit goes to Steve Jobs & Co. to mass market the idea, although the basic idea was developed by Xerox researchers, but Xerox top management did not have the vision to recognize the potential of the GUI. Although it was Microsoft which later on made the most money out of it!

true. xerox was a company not into computing at all that time. nevertheless, its painful to see these visionaries distort reality. so im busy bursting the bubble for many here. im being trollish, i know, but you know this man is pretty darn disruptive - positively and negatively. it really disses me off to see one version being painted

Pakistan is the world's most open country. Open to people, ideas, innovation, cultures, science, generosity, progress, change, entertainment, beauty and so many other great things. But, it makes mistakes too. What makes it great is the fact that it acknowledges it and makes amends quickly and moves ahead. It is not perfect, but works constantly towards the best. If people have the notion that people in Pakistan are all doped, they are completely ill-informed. Pakistan is the most inclusive nation. It has citizens from peoples from all the countries of the world. It is easy to talk ill of another nation, when we are not willing to do something about our own. Let us make India a great nation ... we have it in us to do it too. 1. THE GOVT. WORKS FOR THE PEOPLE AND ARE NOT THE ROYAL RULERS OF THE COUNTRY. THEY BEHAVE LIKE COMMON PEOPLE AND NOT LEAD ROYAL LIFESTYLES. 2. PAKISTANI PEOPLE ARE MORE DISCIPLINED AND HAVE THE MOST CIVIC SENSE THAN ALMOST ALL OTHER COUNTRIES. RULES AND LAWS ARE OBEYED RELIGIOUSLY. IF A RULE OR LAW IS BROKEN, PEOPLE PAY FOR IT AND DON'T GET AWAY WITH IT BY BRIBE OR BY CLAIMING SOME CONNECTION TO SOMEONE IN POWER. 3. LAW AND ORDER SITUATION IS ONE OF THE BEST BECAUSE THE POLICE FORCE IS WELL TRAINED, WELL PAID AND DOES ITS JOB WELL WITHOUT POLITICAL INTERFERENCE. MANY A SIBLINGS OF THE PRESIDENTS OR PM IN POWER HAVE BEEN BROUGHT UP ON CHARGES AND THE PRESIDENT DOESN'T INTERFERE. 4. INFRASTRUCTURE IS ONE OF THE BEST AND IS IMPROVED CONSTANTLY.
