India was ruled by socialists since independence-it is they who dont want the weaker sections to get educated. BJP ruled India only for 6 years and that too in an alliance while Cong ruled with its own majority. Still the Cong failed to provide education

The Indian govt. has long decided
by piri on Jul 13, 2010 06:25 PM  | Hide replies

that all it takes for a person to be deemed not poor is the availability of the food equivalent of 2800 calories per day for him ! Implicit is the idea that all the poor need is the bare minimum nutrition for sustenance and nothing at all (absolutely nothing) for clothing, shelter, education or health !!!

By this mass delusion exercise, the Indian govt. (specifically the planning commission) has arrived at the astounding discovery that poverty in India has dropped 'steeply' to 'just' 26 % in 2009 !!!

The government went to town with this 'stupendous' discovery and claimed that India's globalisation/liberalisation/structural reforms package of the last 17 years has begun to yield fruit with 'tremendous' speed !!

And the stupid middle class of India, for whom the term 'village idiot' has long been an apt metaphor, swallowed the government's fib hook, line and sinker !!!

Now, the UNDP sponsored MPI states with dispassionate survey results that the poor in 8 states alone numbers up to 42 crores !! This alone is a full 35 percent of the current Indian population ! The poor in the remaining 20 states of the Indian union can then easily add up to yield a net poverty level of 58 percentage (which is the figure published by the HDI - another UN indicator of human development - recently). Alas, unlike the Indian govt. and unlike it's corporate sponsors, the UNDP has no vested interest in trying to 'discover' riches in India where none exist.

Very valid points, PIN. Planning commission and Montek Singh Ahluwalia want to prove that their good work has brought poverty of India down.

I used to be an admirer of MOntek 19 years ago. But this guy has completely transformed himself into a total political tool and a typical bureacrat in Delhi. Have lost all respect for him. Even state and Central minsters have staarted criticizing him. MM Singhji has elevated his status and position so that he is automatically invited to all cabinet meetings now....and despite all the power in delhi he is totally into massaging numbers to suit the political bosses and fool the public into this great myth of 'We will be better than USA in 25 years'.

Rich-Poor divide
by harsh goyal on Jul 13, 2010 05:39 PM

Except Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, all other states in the list are extremely rich in natural resources and have a large tribal population. Some areas of Andhra, Maharashtra and Karnataka also fall in this eastern under- developed category of states. The natural wealth of these areas has been exploited over the years, but the fruits have not been shared with the local population. These areas have no electricity, irrigation facilities, roads, railways, hospitals, schools. This is the root cause that this entire area has become a hot bed of the naxals. Offcourse the story of bihar and uttar pradesh is different.

All North Indian states
by Adani Ambani on Jul 13, 2010 01:01 PM  | Hide replies

All the 8 states mentioned are North Indian states. All the 4 South Indian states Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are among the richest in India, in spite of the central politicians being highly biased against these states.

If the prime minister and his council of ministers are all from South India, then India will be one among the top 5 economies of the world within 5 years.

To divert people's attention from government's failure to eradicate poverty, the government has started arresting poor husbands under a frivolous act called 498A.
