THIS SHAMSHABAD AIRPORT AREA IS REALLY BIG
by CHATUR on Feb 18, 2010 10:59 AM  | Hide replies

But the whole aiport is designed in such a way that, more glass fibre & steel were used instead of concrete stuff.........the pics here look good, than seeing them originally, .........the only advantage of this airport is that , it has huge amounts of land, can be used for further extension,,,,,but airport built at the cost of farmers land

Hyderabadis are lucky because Manina Maga Deve Gowda is not an Andhra man.Otherwise he would not have allowed the airport to come up by acquiring farmers land.

Criticism is the way of life in India
by Almighty on Feb 18, 2010 10:42 AM  | Hide replies

This is for all the people who don't appreciate recognition.... whether the guy who ranked it has travelled much or not or whether Govt. has wasted our money on it I think this is the best appreciation India has achieved all the people in rest of the World think that India is still the country where only poor and illiterate people live this is the moment where the rest of the World will know that India is doing good in all sectors... so let us all be proud about this rather than sulking on this forum like loosers..... When we only don't appreciate ourselves why would anybody else will...

Its not about being intellectual Mr. Kishore its all about your frustration in life don't take that out on me or anyone else..People who can't do anything in life are the ones who blame others, people who believe in God and their skills will never blame others... May be you are right that GMR is a fraud company but can you do anything about it for that matter the entire system in India is corrupted what have we done about it nothing and remember nothing can be done till people like you and me just debate, argue and fight on the forums like this... the real change will come in India when people like u and all the others who have good intentions for the country come together and work for the good of the country....

Begumpet Airport Vanished
by Al Ringer on Feb 18, 2010 10:19 AM  | Hide replies

I have seen the new airport it has been built to the International standards. Airport staff also seem to be a little better trained. Corruption is minimal at this point

People seem to think GMR company built this airport. We should recall that GMR company came into existence less than a year before the airport contract was awarded to it. GMR brought in airport builders from Germany/Singapore to actually execute the project. So GMR is only a middle-man agency that was able to secure the airport contract even though they had ZERO experience in building anything prior to this. They did manage to get the job done though, so we should give them at credit.

The location of this airport is inconvenient to most people of Hyderabad city. Although there was a huge hue and cry initially people got used to the location eventually.

It was shocking for the people to learn that the Govt. secretly made an agreement with GMR that when they start operations at the new airport the Govt. will close down the existing Begumpet airport immediately. Further the agreement disallowed building any more airports within 150 KM radius of the new airport.

One of our big problems in India is lack of adequate infrastructure. With fast growing economy our needs are growing faster than we can built infrastructure. So, in this case why would Govt. make a deal to close down an existing fully functional airport that in the most convenient location in the city? This was down without public input.

WHY? WHY? WHY

Al, the rating is not on how well the Airport was built - which you say has been done by foreigners. It is on how well the Airport is operated, which for the last 2 years has been done by GMR. Wake up kid!
And why bring the ghastly Begumpet airport into picture. It outlived its utility and that was why it was closed. Still can't understand? Ask the next person who travels most from Hyd - you obviously don't.

I disagree.

I am for adding new infrastructure to the country not for shutting down existing functional infrastructure to make a private company profitable. I would expect a private company to compete for business not eliminate competition. Especially a private company should not have a business model to become profitable at the expense of PUBLIC MONEY. This will happen only in INDIA.

1. Agreed 1000 crores (or whatever as there is no evidence) was spent on Begumpet. It outlived its utility. Either you have to break all the buildings around Begumpet to expand or move out - tell me which is easier?
2. Any sane business model needs to be viable. For a size of Hyderabad air-traffic market, two airports is obviously not profitable (unlike cities like NY/London that have three airports). If you want a private consortium to take up airports they need gaurantee that it will be profitable otherwise you will get another sub-standard govt one like in Begumpet. When the world over airports are being built with superb facilities under private sector why should India be different?
3. UDF will be stopped once the airport becomes break-even. IF you don't have UDF then the govt must support it - why waste valuable tax payer's money on this when it can be spent elsewhere? Why should a farmer pay for it when he is not using the airport? Let those who use it pay for it. And those who use it are not poor, they can afford to pay it. So it is a complete perfect solution.

Remember one thing..
Government has right to use the people money as we r paying lot of money in the form of Tax.. U cant blame just like dat..
If we dont have a New Airport in Hyd.. Think abt d older one.. It became like bus stand with many people traveling and Congested...
Nothing can b developed if cheating is not happening.. We have to b proud for all these..

Good for Hyderabad and good for India. Let us get the railways too out of its morass and make it world class. A small beginning has been made with the Delhi Metro, though the accidents have put a dampener on it.

To be recognized as the world's top 5 is not an easy joke. It is a recognition of your multiple skills, viz. designing, aesthetics, functionali- ty, operationalizing and upkeep of the airport. Keep it up, GMR !!
