idea of cities is good
by Dev on Nov 08, 2009 03:09 PM  | Hide replies

im for makeover of 15 cities, creation of 10 new cities..but towns and villages are also good.they have appeal which translates into tourist cash and are a respite from citylife.

some european towns and villages are having big economies due to siting of some manufacturing units and also due to growing particular farm produce.

manufacturing is non existent in india, especially in rural setting.

It was systemically destroyed by British. Now, politicians ensure that it never picks up, with myriad rules and regulations.

Ex: You need to get over 160 different licenses to run a ordinary Hotel!

I foresee 1000 cities in india by 2050
by R Puratchimani on Nov 08, 2009 02:53 PM  | Hide replies

Every district capital in India can be converted into a city. If we convert every district capital in India we will have 593 cities.
The govt may consider giving more power to district collectors or they can create a city development authority in each district. Through this definitely we can create more than 500 cities. I foresee about 1000 cities in India by 2050.
Today's situation

by vijay periasamy on Nov 08, 2009 08:19 AM

This is actually happening in TN. Several new cities have been formed (rather upgraded) in the last few years. Ex. Erode, Tiruppur... And plans for a few more are in the making... Jai TN. Jai DMK, Jai Karunanidhi...

Just do it!

By putting new clothes on old person does not make him/her young! Likewise, no amount of make-up will improve our cities. Most want ours developed with Shanghai (US cities need make-over!) type roads & bridges as long as our property is untouched!

Now that highways are the rage, why not really do it? Prahlad has seen it more than most of us, so his words should spur us on! Also, let us build bottom-up from scratch! Let the cities be designed zero-energy with solar panels on roof, sides with greenery thrown-in! Our blinding sun is to be welcomed! SunGod has a purpose, not for nothing that we have have been praying for him while others ingnored him! Many thought earth is the centre of the universe & some with their huge ego gave a feeling everything revolves around them! We all know at least few!

Green & renewable energy is around the corner! It will become profitable soon with scaling-up. Internal Cumbustion Engines will be faced out! Yes, some already feel, dream-on! But the richest Chinese owns BYD car co which makes electric cars. The boss was deprived in child-hood but made break-through in battery technology! With wily Buffet investing billion dollars, what more proof one needs? The share price of BYD is up 5 times this year! Now China is planning battery recharging points in major cities!

Possibilities are endless! Why not make the Great Leap Forward(not Mao type!) & get the best technologies for our future cities?

Future exciting? You bet!!

ur right..even if u makeover 15 existing towns and have 10 new cities ,it is enough.
one of the reasons should be to integrate indians. we need to somehow merge into one single entity-ie, indians. no north-south, state, caste, language differences

an american, chinese, australian can easily pack up and move to another part of their country without much thought about fitting in etc
this is what we should aim for.

also, we need to first streamline all trade matters.the taxes on import items are too high compared to other country tarriffs.People in other countries are having a good life, largely due to cheap imported products from allover the world.
I hope we can import substitute but until then, we have to follow other countries example.

Dear Sir, This time

Just make sure you do not allocate plot areas lesser than (some specified larger number of Sq.Ft, say 0.2 acres each or whatever number you like) Spread the house onto a larger piece of land, that is what I mean, to decrease density and increase quality of life. Hey, I think it would be a great idea for a better life. Do you?

point well made...

some sane advice after a long time...this will surely reduce lot of problems..as the economic growth takes place...only thing one needs to see that natural balance is also maintained..bottomline is let there be decentralisation of growth..

500 cities
by Ravinder Malhotra on Nov 07, 2009 11:04 PM  | Hide replies

I have a better suggestion than what Dr. C K Prahalad has given.
Start systematically clearing the flora and fauna in this nation starting from North to South and East to West and build mega cities.
Open the borders to let every Tom, Dick and Harry driven out from any nation in the world to walk in freely to buy apartments in these mega cities. It will help resolve the economic crisis

Secondly, announce a life long government grant, and free medical facilities for each family that produces at least 6 children and should any of them be employed in Air India, their family and their extended relatives be allowed free travel anywhere in the world.
