better to sell the airlines and instead for on ancillaries for air travels viz a viz airport maintainance etc... move out of the business . govt has no business to be in business. concentrate on social welfare, health and education
Air India could take a few tips from Lalu on how he revived the Railways. My personal opinion as a HR professional would be to have a good vision with professional HR structure with best practices. Hire the best people by paying competent salaries and have a good manpower plan so that your people are utilized well. Stop all wasta (influence) business of hiring people. Take seriously your customer feedback and bring in change management to implement the feedback.
Kabeer has pointed out using the business class for senior citizens. I would suggest to provide unoccupied first or business class to youngsters of top educational institutes who will be in top business/professional positions in the future. Once you spoil them now, they will come back when they have money.

1) You don't yet know the real facts of Railways. Let the white paper come as assured by Mamta and you'll see a whole different picture of Indian Railways. 2) Indian Railways operate in Monopoly situation, Air India doesn't. That's a big differentiator.
1. Priority in queue system is only allowed at the check in counters; business class and economy class passengers standing separately. But at the time of taking the bus to reach the aircraft near the security counter all are equal. It has to be first come first in. However, in private airlines, for example King Fisher, I dont know whether you experienced or not, if not you better observe when you travel next time, the airlines usherer comes and escorts the business class passengers and cajoles the CISF cop standing there to push the business class or VIP or celebrity passengers ahead of the queue. Air India never did that.
2. The Govt staff should travel by Air India only because it is Air India that cares for society and senior citizens by foregoing extra seats. If your grand mother has to travel on a stretcher in an aircraft, it is only Air India that do not charge an extra penny and loose about 4-5 seats to allow your grand mother travel on a stretcher in an aircraft. Govt staff are primarily public servants i.e. servants of society. SO it is their duty to compensate the national carrier so that the carrier can cater to the societal needs.
3. Air India is the only carrier, for the sake of national integration, runs trips in loss making areas like the north-east so that people in north-east and places like Jharkhand still people that they belong to India. No other private carrier operateS there because it'sn't profitable.

I agree with you, surprisingly AI does not opeate in the commercially viable sectors, whether an understanding with the private operators?
Survival and success of any airline depends on two factors:
1. High occupancy 2. Cost cutting.
Now, for AI to get high occupancy,
1. Show cockpits to children below a certain age. That brings kids and along with kids come their parents.
2. Give meal coupons along with tickets and ask them to have food in the cafeterias of either departure or destination's airport. This saves staff on aircraft and passengers can have comfortable meals and those who want to sleep can sleep peacefully without airhostess or food smells disturbing them.
3. Choose one lucky passenger for every flight and on a monthly basis arrange a meeting alternatively with PM and President. Those who can not travel to Delhi can meet the CM or GOvernor.
4. Make salwar-kameez the uniform to all airhostesses and treat them more respectfully and tell the passengers that airhostesses are not sex symbols but those who are trained to evacuate the passengers in emergencies.
5. Offer 3/4th of Unoccupied Business Class seats to senior citizens travelling in Economy class for comfort.
6. Have a tie-up with private radio cab services for picking up and dropping off passengers free of cost within city limits.
7. Offer domestic flight facilities to foreign tourists on a priority basis.
8. Of course, ask all Govt staff to travel ONLY through AI
Air India's air hostesses and other staff are great. Many times when Veg food was in short supply the Airhostesses offer staff's food to the passenger
AI needs to be revived..AI is capable to give the best, just they need proper management and guidance, without to much political involvment. Current staff is capable to make AI top airlines; they need proper training.. good managers to manage.. if only this has been done.. the day is not far when AI being Govt. Airlines, become No.1 airlines.. By taking ve approach.. every thing will be going ve...
The job of the government is administration and not running a business unless in an exceptional situation. This is the basic mistake. If the government has a societal responsibility, the employees in government organizations enjoy safety/right etc in their jobs which is discriminatory compared to concerns in private sector. This 'safety/right' is the main culprit. There could be a plausible reason after independence but today, it's utter stupidity. Govt must wash its hands in no time. AI need be dissolved, why pump funds to a sinking ship? Rather funds can be used for aviation infrastructure and to promote more of newer privately owned airliners. The useless employees are no asset, they need be dumped ASAP. I have my worst experience with AI and I swear to not travel by AI never ever and I solemnly believe it's just a burden on taxpayers money. THIS COMPANY NEED BE DISSOLVED.
Air India is a small example of what ails India in general. Real truth is you get what you deserve. If everything is "Chalata hai", to "chala lo"; dil na jalao.
