Innovation from India: The next big wave
by dadi bhote on Feb 18, 2009 11:15 AM

Indians are uniquely placed to be Innovative because of our very existence depends on daily Innovation: we in India have to be innovative in every day living and are finely tuned to innovate. It runs in our system and Indian companies need to take advantage of our capabilities and run with it.

Example: The average worshop worker in India is phenomenally innovative due to the lack of tools and facilities yet every day they perform tasks which other people would have written off.

Based on my experience in midddle east & other asian countries with MNCs, Indians have no problem working under White bosses. They are super hardworking and loyals. But u put an Indian boss, they will try to topple him. I think we got this habit frm english occupation of our Great Nation. May be it take generations to change.

...That is because Indians are less trust worthy and biased and go on personal likes and dislikes when giving credit... wheels in wheels etc.. where as White specially American will be more straightforward and honest in giving credits so indins dont fear the wrong credit while working with white.

In India we have this tendency to steal credit from others. The bosses are most unqualified persons who have been successful due to flattery, sycophancy or political connections. Unqualified persons are leading India and holding most of her wealth. As a result, the sincere innovators in any field (science, arts, technology, politics or even spirituality) are subdued by the vested interests.
We need a set of qualified political leaders to set things right. Currently we don't have any.

Check any country, people try to steal credit of others. Patenting by western countries also involves stealing IP of other countries produces and registering it as their own. Westerns went around countries plundering and looting other's resources. It is the mentality that needs to be changed.

People are Indian, companies are American
by UsualSuspect on Feb 18, 2009 10:54 AM

In the EKG example given in this article, the employees are Indian but the company is American. The innovation credit goes to the company.

Indian companies while maintaining their hold in services sector should start focusing on innovation if they were to become global leaders of any kind.

India Should focus on following to become R&D solutions Leader.
1)Treat R&D as a business not a cost center.
2)Key factor to determine R&D value are expected return on investment.
3)Developed successful new products brought to market within 3-5 years.
4)Keep budget of 4Billion - 5Billion every year on R&D.

Agree with point 1,2 &3. reg pt 4 I agree money has to be spent on R&D but govt is not equiped to plan and budget for it. May be pvt sector could be given financial incentives for new tech implementation especially in the field of energy, electronics, agriculture etc.

A lot of talk about brain drain has been done...Is it any different that our people working for foreign companies and then they take the fruit and say it is their's. Do they ever say who made it...history has shown we have always been treated like this. A lot of fuss is already there that a lot of vedic medicine has already been stolen by scientists of other countries and they have made their patent and ultimately we never resisted.

Good change
by Arbee Mumbai on Feb 18, 2009 10:33 AM

For a change Indians have started to invest their time in innovation and prodctionisation of Research. The current meltdown may be a blessing in disguise for India as there will be sizable reverse brain drain and quite a few hitech professional are likely to return to india and work here. Exposure to western work culture and techniques will certainly help india in putting to production the technologies that keep languishing in various research labs.
