There is clarification now that it is just a computing device. Isn't that called a calculator? That is a bulky and costly calculator.

False Claim - Its not a Laptop
by nitin arora on Feb 04, 2009 01:51 PM  | Hide replies

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Tirupati: The much-touted laptop for the masses said to have been built by students of Vellore Institute of Technology that would cost a mere Rs 500 actually turned out to be only a computing device.
Making this clear at the inauguration of the national Mission on Education Programme organized by the Union HRD Ministry here on Tuesday, joint secretary N K Sinha said the computing device is 10 inches long and 5 inches wide and has been priced at around $30 at the event. However, he refused to comment as to why was it being projected as a laptop when it was not.The so-called laptop actually turned out to be a storage device containing megabytes of data info which can be accessed by a user by connecting this device to a laptop. It meant that unlike the internet, this device can display that information that has already been stored.
Some delegates at the exhibition claimed that with the help of this device a laptop caosting about $60 can eventually be manufactured. But for now at least the $10-laptop turned out to be damp squib.

Foolish Politicians
by Himanshu on Feb 04, 2009 01:35 PM

You are correct our politicians dont know anything about Laptops and scientists would have told that when they made this laptop for dummies from the junk it costed them Rs 500. The politician thought of bragging about it and asked for a press conference but not in main city but in Tirupathi where nobody can question him. Politician never thought that the laptop cant be reproduced at the same cost. Again whoever has written this news said that there is a flutter in international market as if they are really bothered about our fool politicians and scientist who dont do anything worthwhile. The will make fun when they will come to know of the our politicians foolishness.

The govt. & its Ministers are wasting time in false claims of US $ 10 laptop at that price, you can expect only peanuts. Someone is fooling with information. Such a hullaboo news, but no write up on what that Laptop has....I strongly suspect it may NOT even have A- of keyboard,....wasting public & tax payers money for this useless research....which Japanese the wizards of "mini or micros" find it difficult to make one....think our brainless Govt. scientists to come with an answer when they have NO single rupee to fund their activities. Come on man who are you trying to fool......

Umesh,

1. They are expecting this laptop in markets within 6 months from now.
2. This is not for family laptop.., this is for the students studying till 10th class.

3. If you are looking for a laptop for family in less cost, I found acer 8.9 inch, 1GB ram, 80 GB HDD without CD/DVD drive from acer for 16800. This is the cheapest laptop i have seen till now.

Thanks,
NP
