Consumer ? or Retailer ?
by chelam on Sep 03, 2007 01:48 PM

Whos is important in this country ?
Millions of middle class consumers - who will benefit from these shops
OR
Thousands of retailers - who don't mind extracting their pound of flesh both from the producer and the consumer

It is a hollow argument that producers will loose with such shops. In other sectors particularly in diary the producers is getting benefitted.
Supply chain between the producer and the consumer should be as short as possible. Then producer will get good price and consumer will get good savings.
Retailers make this supply chain longer. There is no built in mechanism for retailers or intention in them to make this chain short.
Why should consumer fill the wallets of retailers who are basically middlemen ?

Dont allow biggies into retail!
by Shiva on Sep 03, 2007 10:04 AM  | Hide replies

One man taking the profits of millions of people cannot be allowed. There are millions of smalltime retailers who will suffer because of a few retail giants

There is an easy way to stop these fellows from opening shops. A panchayat has the powers to pass a resolution to stop them from opening a shop in their area.

Are we concerned more about the consumers or retailers in the countries. Why no one cries foul when these same retailers hoards goods during emergiencies and raises prices artificially ?
I think the population of this country is much more bigger than the retailers. Let them decide whether they want to buy from Reliance or the kirana stores. We the people are the best judge.

Shiva,

"One man taking the profits of millions of people cannot be allowed." Could you please give a single reason why it cannot be allowed?
If he works hard, if he can provide good stuff with decent price tag, let him do the business. He is not doing anything illegal. so whats the problem?
I guess your intention was to say that the small players/traditional players will suffer. But do they really do? Even if reliance or any major brand comes up, I prefer to buy from local market due to shear convenience. I prefer the sabjiwala who comes to my doorstep and sells. Thats also convenience. I like mall hiking and do that once in a while, and may purchase something or the other from the retailers , but the regular supplies will always be from the local sabjiwala. This may be the mentality of the majority also. Maybe initially people will go there but eventually prefer to shop from the neighborhood stores for convenience.

Stir agianst organized trade
by Bodh Ramdeo on Sep 03, 2007 06:37 AM

Cong govts have 'decreed' this land into virtual poverty. It's time Indians of all stripes showed some backbone and stood up for what's best for them, and not whats' best for Cong, CPI or BSP - but can they, or, will they?
They've allowed themselves to be hajacked by a few slefish, self-centered crimianl politicians who's only looking out for #1 - only themsleves.
And frnakly, all this talk of putting the samll trader out of business, is all talk - expansion of the economic base is like the expansive sea - a rising tide lifts al boats, even the samll traders.

This article is no indepth study on PROS & CONS , it just says , some 1000 farmers forming a human chain and protesting for Restarting Retail sale as well as implementation of New farm policy.

Fact remains that India is 1 billion Population country, it needs to organise it self in Retail.

It needs to have beeter handling of its FARM Produce. That means improved conditions in FARMING ( Organic products / Well sorted, graded with a Gaurantee on produce being Bacteria / desease free)

Otherwise keep on visiting local Mandi and keep on buying Vegetables which are lying in dirty/ rotton surrounding, regularly visited by Cows / dogs.

Maybe we Indians deserve that as we want low cost products and do not want to work for improving the quality of our life.

We trust Local Baniya more. Some times I really wonder and aplaud Dr KURIEN for craeting AMUL.

I wish some other Dr KURIEN II takes over Retail sales. ( as Commies will not allow Private sector)

For Indian Private sector >> Well they can set shop in ( Brazil / Russia / China)

India is not a place for them.

RELIANCE RETAIL VENTURE
by VENKATARAMAN RAMACHANDRAN on Sep 02, 2007 04:22 PM  | Hide replies

Could have planned in a better way. The masses could have been attracted to the Reliance Petrol bunks, along with each Reliance could have opened their retail outlets. This would have saved them enormous outflow of rental also. From this beginning, they could have slowly entered the City Centres with their outlets, and then at the outskirts with major malls / hypermarkets. Though Mukesh & his team knows the market better, could have entered in a slow, steady and indirect manner, so that the market could have studied what a major organisation can contribute for the retail segment. Though the existing retailers are upset about the major organisations entry, they should wait for the customers feedback and support, as we are sure the major organisations will cater for nearly 30 to 40%, and the remaining will continue to patronise their usual outlets. In order to protect the vote banks, many of the State Governments will resort to not giving permission to the major organisations to open their retail outlets.
Mini-malls along-side the Reliance Petrol bunks are a major area, where they can open their outlets, even with coffee shops / game centres etc.

Reliance Petrol Pumps ae not popular as Reliance is given stepmotherly treatment on Gasoline sales.
So most of Reliance Gasoline is exported out of India at a good profit, and not sold in India.

So vending retail items from Ptrol pumps is not a good idea at least for now or untill Govt of India free floats Controlled Oil sector.

Also if we look at Relaince Retail Supply chain investment and plans than Petrol pumps are too small for such an activity.

Also most of City petrol pumps are small in comparison to what you see in Western countries.

why is WALMART denied entry in India ?
by jayant pawar on Sep 02, 2007 02:38 AM  | Hide replies

I often wonder why WALMART is not there in India , when we have reliance fresh and other chains ,why not have WALMART as well consumers will be further benifited. On the same lines why is it that we dont have foreign press in India ? Like DNA has just stsrted in mumbai , do we Indians have double standards , or is it that Indian companies like Reliance are fooling Indians and politicians and try to have their monopoly before others get in.Mind you Reliance broke all laws in telephone scandle and was shameless to pay fine for brakeing the law which they did intentionally ,taking undue advantage of weak Indian laws.

FDI in retail is restricted by the GOI that does not permit retail chains such as WALMART from freely entering and setting up shop in India. It is NOT a fair stand by the GOI, it is high time that the GOI opened up the multibrand retail sector to FDI that woul allow MNCs such as WALMART to freely enter India and develop India's Organized retail infrastructure that at this point is non-existent.

Whethere it is fair or not, International RETAIL chains are not allowed to set up shops in India as per the current policy. But at the same time they may be allowed to start operations in India if supported by a local company (read BHARATI-WALLMART ). Also MNCs are allowed to do wholesale business in consumer goods - look at METRO cash n carry shops in Bangalore. What is the difference between Metro and Wallmart, I do not understand. Reliance which is an Indian company is allowed by central government to open retail shops all over the country, but certain state governments and political parties does not allow its operation. I wonder what is the real policy of the Government both central and state with regard to retain chains. With the increasing population of India, any number of retain shops started by firms like Reliance will not be a problem for the local Kirana shops and local farmers. These retail maha stores can never replace the local provision shops at any time. I wonder who is afraif of whom?

That is true. In fact Mayawati has shown no regards to efficiency. Just today I learnt Adani's Gas pipeline job has been halted.

It seems what ever earlier Govt. started with MUKESH / ANIL / ADANI's is on the hold.

All this work is obviusly based on Loans from various Banks and Public money.
So effectively Mayawati is in efficient CM.

You just compare her with ChandraBabu Naidu or Nareandra Modi. Or Old timer Chiman Bhai Patel. It seems she has no vision. She is more interested in building her and her relatives Wealth.
