You think Banaglore's that expensive? FYI other places in India are more expensive than Bangalore. Coming to the list, when you don't even see places like Los Angeles in there how on earth do you expect Bangalore!? Wake up man!
60% live in slums and have no proper sanitation ,drinking water . unmaintained roads and pathetic transportation and above all unwillingness of state govt to spend any significant money to improve the city (they want to spend all the revenue(taxes,bribes,....) for the state) . No wonder whatever few properties that are somewhat good command high prices.
Mumbai hi india nahi hai..........aur bhi city ,state hai india me ,,govt. should develop them also...Assam,Aurnachal Pradesh,Sikkam,Tripura....like that......

Rao is half British who don't care about the national language. He seems to be interested in language rather than the problems country or a particular city is facing.

Yes, Shakti you are right.
If the government develops other states and cities it won't need to spend so much on Mumbai to achieve so little.
If other cities are developed, the influx into Mumbai for employment will be redistributed and thus lessen the overwhelming demand on its resources and infrastructure.

RE:List the Cost
by Sunit Kumar on May 22, 2007 09:23 PM
Accha, even if u r working in US at 80K per year, i bet u cant buy a flat in Goregaon, forget even going near Lokhandwala !!! So bete stay where u are and dont act smart, u dont have the capacity to buy even a room in bombay !!!
We should compare these prices with chennai...jus have a look at OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road) that is called new chennai. Vacant ground cost is comes to 60 lakhs...even which is some around 40 km from chennai city. then imagine the price of individual houses and 2 / 3 BHK apartment prices...
Doha which hosted the 2006 Asian Games is also a very expensive city. Even much more than Dubai. I find it strange that it has not made the list. My friend in Doha tells me that it is much more costlier than in London.
Our cities lacks vision. They could be most expensive which I still doubt but at the same time most dirtiest cities in the world. You know also that 30% of the people in Mumbai dont have access to toilets. I would think twice before living in Mumbai, if given a chance to live in suburbs. Our drains are clogged with gutkas, plastic and have reduced the capacity of drainage to mere 10%. Nobody gives a stop.Roadside spitting, squatting, urinating are almost acceptable in Indian cities.Cities are dying of greens, Childrens are longing for space to play. The roads are choked. How long will people take to understand the realtionship of transport with development. When I visit home in India, I long for pedestrian only streets or even some Greens to relax. There is lot for city planners to do.May be india should send some indians who are prospective urban planners to visit Europe for a week or two to understand what are cities and what are slums and how would tey like there cities to look like..

by karthick raju on May 22, 2007 09:09 PM
every thing is in the hands of people.Think if a indian walking in the streets of singapore does he has guts to spit there or a man living in india does he spits inside his home absolutely no .we cannot completely rely on gevernment these days and we educated people should be examples for the illiterates and young children. why does we people dont have this feeling. If we think we can we can make mumbai a good place to live.
The price hike in Mumbai is primarily due to 2 reasons.
1> Lands locked in South Mumbai which were on old, shut down textile mills. 2> Lands locked in old chawls and few government PSU whose land is worth more than what they produce.
There are estimated 600 to 800 acres of land in central and south central Mumbai which are slowly being recycled to me made avilable for residential and commercial purposes. It needs to go faster, the central government and the Parliament with its absent minded lefts keep slowing and blocking any new reforms and want the textile mills to be restarted. Its not profitable to run a textile mill in Mumbai when the land it stands on is worth 1000 times more than the production and turnover. On the other hand the mill owners also must show honestey and give the golden handshake and VRS to the workers . pay their dues and then sell of the lands to have the high rise towers and skyscrappers. The opposition is because the mill owners want to sell of the lands and not pay the VRS and golden handshake to workers which is wrong.
Secondly south Mumbai has lot of chawls and old buildings which are at prime locations. The rent control act locks them and prevents them from being sold, and the rents of 1949 does not make it feaseable for anyone to own and run it profitabbly too. The rent controll act needs to go away and those older structures can also make way for newer taller and swankier structures.
Lastly Mumbai needs to have the SRS (Slum Rehabilation Scheme) implemented to the fullest, There may be some complaints of currouption , but the slums occupy prime locations , which need to be used is a fact no one can deny.
All these steps will increase supply of land and which will make more people live in south Mumbai.
Listen to this. PEOPLE LIVE IN MUMBAI SUBURBS ONLY BECAUSE THE MUMBAI TOWNSIDE PROPERTEY MARKET RATES ARE UNPRACTICAL.
When the rich and affulent and the upper middle classes can afford South and Central Mumbai,
The middle classes and the lower middle classes will be able to live affordabley in the Mumbai surbubs
