Sad.
by Shailesh iyer on Nov 10, 2006 11:21 PM

That was really sad. In fact the alumni associations at IITs/IIMs should earmark a portion of the funds collected for the well being of every professor and his dependents. Both critical illness and retirement - in the lines of what is done in the US. In fact outsource it to some organization in US, guys in Indian government are not capable of this sort of things. Secondly in the place of stupid reservation laws which consumes lots of time, enact a law which gives monetary benefits/covers to the really deserving elderly.

Finally, a good docu drama or neatly scripted movie should bring about this kind of issues out.

ajit article

Teachers and professors are the farmers whose produce are leaders, technocrats and good citizens.Let those influential men who have reached dizzy heights due to the likes of Prof.Ramu Iyer start a dialogue in the society regarding this subject so there are no more cases of givers like Prof.Ramu Iyer. That could probably be the beginning of setting things in right perspective in our society.

Moving story but then our teachers chose the the jobs for themselves
by Sudhir Bisht on Nov 10, 2006 09:17 PM  | Hide replies

I am quite moved by the article.
We are what our teachers taught us to be. They tried to mould each one of us to be a good citizen and a successful one.
Those of us who followed their pieces of advice became successful. So we remain eternally grateful to them. Teachers really impact our lives like none does. They are our idols, our role models and our first icons.
But Life is all about inequalities.
The taught overtake their teachers easily when it comes to earnings and it is earnings that count in the materialistic world.

Sad but True!
My Salute to the Late Professor who taught because he loved to teach.
He chose the profession in spite of knowing the salary that he would earn. To teach must have been his passion and he chose to do what his heart told him to do. The choice was not forced upon him.
After all we choose our professions, the profession doesnt choose us.

Are we people not to blame???
by happy on Nov 10, 2006 07:47 PM

I expected the people posting comments here to be educated and beneficiaries of the education system. What can we expect from the government. I mean we all know what state governance of india is in....

I sincerely urge you to think if there is any other solution.
Can not we form strong alumini who also takes care of the teaching staff, past and present and not only the infrastructure and students needs... I know it sounds hilarious but believe me it is practically possible....

Gurudakhsina de nahi sakte dena nahi chahte... kam se kam guru ko jab hamari zaroorat hoti hai tab hum unki seva kar to sakte hain...

It's only a thought.... which can support millions of teachers in India and also improve the liking for the noble profession...

Irony is that in India and many developing nations, role of a faculty position is not in commensurate to what the standard of living that he/she enjoys ...Kudos to Ajit who has once again highlighted such an issue which is of prime importance...any takes for such a social issue...i am with them..

Destiny of IIM Prof.
by Saji Thomas on Nov 10, 2006 03:33 PM

Dear friends,

This can happen with any honest government servant with current government pay structure and the soardng prices of commodities of daily use. The Prof's soul will be at least happy that his students did not leave him at the hour of crisis, though his destiny had something else in store for him.
Still, I belive the Prof was much better off than the farmers who committed suicide due to mounting poverty and no one around to offer a helping hand like the good students of the Prof.
Bad is bad for everyone not to the Prof alone.

Last Days of an IIM Professor

Ajit has point out very truly wrote about our government system and pay commission system
which put all kind of employee under common pay scale system. Researchers and Ph.D's from IIM's and IIT's institution even not like to join IIM's and IIT's due
to the low salary structure. Due to this even IIM and IIT like institution not able to fill vacant seats.

Indian government should seriously yhink about this.

Hi Ajit,

Your article was definitely informative & has called for a lot of soul-seraching within us. We are never bothered to do something for our schools, colleges & educational institutions whom we often refer to as our alma mater.

Regards

Raghavan
